cummins discussion thread.
« on: March 03, 2010, 12:35:17 PM »

lol im pretty sure the welder is broken (most likely im just retarded :-*)

the hand control does not work.. (its more like an on off switch :()
no matter how high or low i set the hand control the bitch is psycho..

also i dont think i even noticed a difference between dc + and dc -

what the fuck am i supposed to look for..

i was under the impression that im supposed to weld ss with dc-

im pretty sure the vice has contaminated the ss :p whatever metal the vice is made out of when i brushed the welds it also brushed the vice and got the vice metal into the ss :p

ok im done for now i have to go somewhere i will most likely try again tomorrow after getting alot more input doing ALOT more reading.. and i also need to get me a higher work place and a chair to sit on to get more accurate control..

the gas may or may not be flowing through the machine.. or if it is its not at a high enough rate.. im removing the gas line tomorrow (or tonight) to have a look at it.. lol

cant get an arc started without touching the tungsten to the metal no matter how close i come to the metal...

first attempt :D scared the fuck out of me (im in an uncomfortable welding position crouching on the floor..)

welder jumped around lol

finally got what looked like a decent bead lmao

then the tungsten did this :p

cleaned it with a file and metal brush

how i have the tungsten extended

2nd attempt just as hideous

after a quick brush

hideous i tell ya.. hideous lmao

overall. not as bad as a first attempt as i thought it would be :p

Dude put a damn point on that tungstun. WTF man.

post a picture of your set up. including your ground clamp and you torch. also post picture of your regulator. You should hear the gas hissing as it comes out of the torch while welding. start at 15 CFH.

damn dude thats worse then when i started. READ THE BOOK ON HOW TO SET UP THE MACHINE

You have zero gas coming out that regulator to produce those garbage burned holes. YOu need to see 15cfh while your welding.

What cfh is it at?

What amps are you at?

How fast are you moving?

Are you trying to tack it?

First, Get rid of that regulator.  You need one that does flow.

One like this

Or this

Yours does PSI and wont not work, but not what you want.  Kind of like this one.

Next, you need to sharpen your tungsten.  Your arc will wonder all over the fucking place if you dont.

For Sch10 SS, I run about 70 amps

Last, for welding stainless, stay on DC-

Also, is your torch broken?  Make sure there are no leaks anywhere along the line and especially at the torch itself.

Buk,

WTF are you doing?  Why do you do this to yourself?  Go on Craigslist and make an Ad for a "welder needed" and then in the body say you need a private welding instructor and you'll pay $15/hr.  I'd imagine there are a few in the Detroit area that are out of work and could use the money.  6-8 hours with a real pro will put you so far ahead of the game.  $90-120 is nothing if it turns you into a decent welder.

If you don't get legit help or actually read a book on welding, this will be one of your biggest failures.  Time to nut up you silly Arab.

looks like no gas or bad gas, what kind of machine are you using, what kind of torch are you using, and if your current control isnt working right your never going to be able to weld shit.

Leave the filler rod on the table until you make the first root pass. Start at 60 and adjust from there. If the pipe has a quarter size red glowing spot when you lift, you're too hot, or going to slow. At the right amperage you have lots of time to get a good puddle and then walk it around. Try to drag the puddle back and forth in the weld. It will follow the heat if you do it right. SHARPEN YOUR TUNGSTEN PROPERLY. It's 1000x easier to control. The slighted little blob on the tip makes the arc blow around.

Start your gas a second before you strike. Post flow your welds. Read the manual for your welder. If it sputters and sparks you're not getting gas.

Wow.
