srt-4 for reliable daily?
« on: October 26, 2012, 08:49:41 PM »

Whats everyone think.  Have a buddy transferring and offered me his srt-4, just over 100k, brand new trans and clutch.  Its a 2003 and bone stock and stupid cheap (sub 4000), they seem to get pretty good gas milage and have pretty damned good power.  I like the idea of having a sedan with a good trunk and stuff.  I understand its a neon  :?:

I had a 98 neon once. One of the most solid cars I have ever owned. With that said, my years as a tech say everything dodge makes is 110% trash. I would never own one or recommend one to someone. Part of how good my neon was, was that I bought it with a broken timing belt and bent valves. Day one started with a top end rebuild.

I do like their trucks though

I love the srt4s my bro in law had one and since its not really designed by dodge, it's a good motor. He had a 04 and that bitch had a Fuck ton of tq. Few mods and you can easily pull some good numbers. Swaybars, are a must. Stock ones make the car handle like ass. Binges upgrade besides motor mounts and ready to rock.

I've driven a heavily modded one and it felt like shit. I probably could have made it nice in a few hours though.

They have an issue with this little plastic piece under the clutch that breaks and Fucks the clutch throw ( super easy fix ) have no handling info because the one I drove was slammed on coilovers .. I.e. doesn't handle. Motor felt decent on the top end but it was open dp and not tuned for it so the low end felt stuttery and gay. I've heard the motors are stout as Fuck, seats are comfy. 7/10 would buy as long as not Orange.

The 03 had an oppen diff I believe, the 04&5 got LSD. As for my bros it had sway bars, some kick ass tires, strut tie bars, exhaust, cat delet, bigger ic, hard charge pipes, bigger fmic, motor mounts, shifter bushings(a must have) 57 trim turbo, New turbo main and a few other things. Overall it was a pretty stout car. Did not feel like a pos neon. If u pick it up let me know. I believe I still have some of his parts clicking around.

No, all silver no stripes. Crashed it after a tire blew and sucked him into the ditch. That just so happened to have a rock the size of a vw in his path.

I've seen a lot of people going for upgraded billet input shafts for the trans. All that extra torque leads to the stocker being twisted off like a bottle cap.

The rods are prone to long term fatigue.  100K miles lady driven, or 100K miles at 400 whp - she's due to pitch one through the block.  Subframe bushings are trash from the factory.  That shit is clunking around and fucking up the ride even if there's still enough rubber left in there that you don't hear it clunking.  Input shaft isn't really that bad until you make 400+.  The clutches - or at least the first aftermarket clutch - are expensive as you have to buy a flywheel due to the Chrysler wackjob design they ship with.

Boo hoo, all cars have problems.

The ECUs are actually pretty cool, they have a long term knock retard trim which keeps retards from blowing them up. One of the few cars that the KS works well in (until you put loose clearance forgings or cams in there that make noise). Also costs you an ass worth of power if you have an exhaust rattle or something that stimulates the KS when there isn't any knock.  Heads up.

If it's clean and under $4K, I'd rock the piss out of one.
