I'd like to turbo this beast. It has a 15hp honda clone. Any ideas if it can be done reliably with something small like a VW K03(anything smaller out there?) I may need some more power in mine. Obviously there would be no management possible with this, and how would one lube the turbo? And if you're wondering what I'm running this on, well here it is:
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi265.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii225%2FXirus83%2FM4A2%2520Build%2FIMG_2401_zps06601c9f.jpg&hash=bc33c0bdffd254551e5fa6664c1874a73bdd7e58) (http://s265.photobucket.com/user/Xirus83/media/M4A2%20Build/IMG_2401_zps06601c9f.jpg.html)
That was an old pic. The transmission failed so I decided to convert to a hydrostatic setup hence why I may need more power. Here is a more recent pic and I'll have some better ones on the way soon. Yes its a scratch build 40% M4A2

badass

Awesome, what about a GT17 with water cooling and oil suppled from sumps.
Or an Aerocharger turbos those are suppose to self contained. :noel:
-
Oh fuck ya, more pics of tank please!!!!
Smart car turbos are small as fuck but you would need to cut off the built in mani and weld a flange on. V band or something.

That's the same thing I was thinking. Step dad has one sitting on the shelf in his garage that's a new take off that I could probably get him to sell for cheap. Draw through carb and some race gas and a sump setup for the oil and away you go.

Only if you certify me as an OG, lol...and I know you know who I am 8) ...I'll post more in another thread as progress continues. I'd like to leave this thread open for turbocharging discussion for this beast! I'm also gonna be starting a college program very soon so that'll put me out of commission for about 10 months with only weekends to spare. I estimate it will be summer of 2015 once this thing is fully done with detail and final paint.
Use of German parts on an American tank huh? Interesting, I don't think the vets would appreciate that one! Hahaha. Fuck this gives me an idea! Plenty of whiny faggot fighter pilots and officers on base here with smart cars
Another option would be a turbo off a Chevy sonic. We have an LTZ and the turbos are tiny in those things. But being a new car and the fact that most people buy the gutless 1.8 around here, they're very hard to come by second hand.
So a sump of some sort with an external reservoir would be enough for oiling you think? As for the management side do I really need to worry if only running 2-3 psi?
-
Sump would be the way to go
As for the fuel management, is the fuel pump manual?
If so does it have a port to reference outside pressure?
Need to figure out how to retard timing while in boost only or figure out a compromise to having base timing retard. :noel:
-

Talk to Dustin. I actually thought you had died lol. If it was up to me I would do it
-
Russ I think it doesn't have a fuel pump. Think it'sit's gravity feed to the carb. Would have to do a draw through.

That case talk to Daspoop, he has experience in this, and there was a motorcycle project that had this.

First link; turbo would be good for this size engine. They got ecu kits for small engines too.
Now you just need to figure out the 12 gauge turret!
-
Sweet thanks for the link. Yes there is a gravity drain from the fuel tank and in to the bowl and then the carb takes from there so no fuel pump. I was thinking something along the lines of a separate system so while under boost a pressure switch closes a circuit which makes an external injector open and a fuel pump pumps extra fuel from the tank in to the air intake post filter.
I do plan to run an alternator so I will have plenty of amps to run everything. Speaking of alternators, does anyone have a GM 1 wire they're willing to donate to the project?
As for the shotgun idea well it's sort of illegal in Canada to have a vehicle mounted firearm...But...if I have a high powered golf ball cannon nobody will give a fuck! And by powerful I mean a hybrid combustion capable of putting a golf ball through 3/4" ply at 50 yards+ ;DDD
-
Ok bitches so this is officially the tank thread now :noel:
Here is the result from the progress over the last little while. Time to make it all work now. The rest of the week is going to be focused on finishing the hydraulics setup. Stay tuned.

Badest build ever, when boost is added. :noel:

Fuck ya awsome

You get my vote for front page with build link, when this gets boosted.
I'm sure there may be other who would feel the same way. :noel:
-
That would be awesome! But as said before, it'll be a while before it's at that point. Meanwhile I'm taking donations...no I don't want money! I'm looking for a free or super cheap GM 1 wire alternator and a K03 or smaller turbocharger. Going to school very soon so funds will be tight.
-
I got fuck all or I would donate!
-
No worries bud! I just realized I have an old VW 1.9 Turbodiesel engine kicking around that was supposed to go in to my 4Runner but the project got scrapped when I bought my newish Tacoma. Guess what it has on it...Yep a K03 I'm assuming. I have no idea if it still works but its worth a shot. Still need the 1 wire alty tho.
Oh and look at what I found on the interweb. You'll have to go a few pages for the turbo build part of it.

Edit: The guy ended up going with a KP31 off a smart car because he couldn't spool the original eclipse/talon turbo enough. I'm thinking that maybe my engine is too powerful for that? He is running a 160CC Honda and my engine is a 420CC Clone. Should I stick with the K03 or try to find a KP31?

I would try free first. :Jew:

+1 you can always switch later after you iron out the setup w/ free turbo. :noel:

No such thing on this planet anymore...I proved that point today when trying to get some scrap pipe from a local place. I needed a foot of 2" shed 40 to build some engine mounts. They had a big chunk in their scrap bin that was 5' long. I asked if they could just cut a foot for me and they said no. I had to buy the whole fucking piece! Anyway $20 later and I have 4 feet left. Guess I'll use it over time. It sucks ass living in a small community way up north because things are very very hard to get, and very expensive when you get them. Even the bone yards out here suck major ass! This is why I'm accepting donations to this project as I'll never find things such as a smart car turbo. I may find a GM 1 wire but it'll cost me an arm and leg. The closest big city is a 3 hour drive.
-
...The closest big city is a 3 hour drive.
Where do you live?
-
A shit hole called Cold Lake, Alberta. Only reason I'm here is the money in gas and oil.
Here is one for you guys. I have a large DC motor and when I spin it with with a cordless drill I can get 5 volts and 17 amps out of it. I imagine with a small pulley running off an engine turning at 3000-3600rpm I can get quite a bit more. Would I be able to charge the lawn tractor battery with this?

how much power does your engine make stock?
-
fuck yes! can't wait to see what you come up with for the cockpit/turret!
-
fuck can't wait to see you cock
Aaron!!!!

Engine makes 15hp and I think 18 ft lbs of torque at 3600rpm. So with a turbo maybe 20hp? If I turbo it which I rightfully should!
The turret will be made of fiberglass and house a cannon...I know that much LOL. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer Aaron...I still have no idea where I'm going with it. Maybe it will shoot golf balls, maybe I will make my own resin cast projectiles. Who knows. All I know for certain is that it will be a metered combustion type with a breech load as I have no room for pneumatics and besides, they're weak sauce compared to a good propane or oxy acetelene combustion cannon. Been doing a lot of research on the spudgun forums though.
-
my vote is for clay pigeons as a secondary weapon. looks badass so far!
-
I think you need to get your hands on the smallest turbo you can find. rhb3, rhf3, probably a few about this size.... any bigger and you're wasting your time.
-

Don't complicated that motor with a turbo just yet. If that's a gx390 clone, you can double the power with relatively minor work & money. Kart goers take the gx200 to 26hp up from 7hp. The gx390 was designed to put out >13HP for 1000 hours or more, so it will still last a long time if you don't go crazy with revs.
Some cheap upgrades are increasing compression and lift. If your block uses the fiber gasket, you can get a Honda head gasket made from MLS to bump compression. Higher ratio rockers increase lift for almost nothing, although some require different pushrods and a pushrod guide plate. Some of the biggest gains can be had from a larger carb like a Mikuni, a bigger cam (stock has nearly no overlap/duration/lift), and a stinger exhaust. If you ever open the motor up, get oversized rings & file the gap for less blow-by and more power. One of the best mods to safely gain RPM's is a billet flywheel, the stocker is limited to 4k while a billet f/w will let you rev to 7-8k safely.
-
Problem is I cannot be playing with RPM to make power. 3600RPM and that's it. The variable hydraulic pumps I'm using aren't rated for any more. If I need extra power, I'll need it down low and quick. Perhaps even a homemade supercharger could work?
-
Increased power with more RPM and gear reduction?
2:1 would double the effective torque.

Maybe one of those 500cc/rev I see on egay all the time, like RM500 roots style blower:

That S/C looks like the TX04 from OguraClutch, but not complete sure. :noel:

Motor and hydraulic pumps are in, belt tensioner fabricated and she's almost ready for a trial run. I had to make a slight modification to the pumps to move the case drains to the top of them. As you can see there is not a lot of room in there and I dont think that supercharger could fit. The front of the crank will be used to drive the generator. The left side of the engine(as seen in the pic, right side of tank) is about the only room I have, if i go the turbo route then the turbo will have to sit in the exhaust cover in the rear. Something like a sealed, self lubricating vortech would be ideal. Next big thing i want to get out of the way is the reservoir and control linkages.

That supercharger is a sealed runs off of a crank just like the vortech S/C
There is also the s/c used on Seadoo's they are like the vortech s/c. :noel:
-
well then I guess I just got schooled. I dont know too much about superchargers other than they make V8's happy ;DDD
But a sealed unit would be the way to go then provided its cheap. No need to mess around with oil pumps, lines, etc. Now the question is...How much more is it gonna make me broke? This is supposed to be a low budget setup. A tiny turbo would still be cheaper.
-
Those seadoo s/c's are $$$
-
Yeah that wont work then. I want a cheap ass setup... if I even need one. Here is a silly question and I'll probably get burned bad for saying this, but what about those electric blowers! Yes the cheap ones on egay! If one was to take one of those worthless pieces of shit, remove the electric motor and make it shaft driven off a belt. Would there be any advantage with an engine this small? Would I see any boost? Maybe that is all I need.
-
I wouldn't think so, you need a real turbo me thinks.
-
Smaller pulley + higher rpm = same pump speed
The vast majority use a 1" shaft which is very common. You should be able to get a smaller v-pulley w/1" shaft to fit w/o issue. They also make 6:1 and 2:1 reduction boxes, but need the matching crank. The 2:1 also has a wet clutch similar to what's on bikes.
-

But I still dont see the point in all the extra revs. I get that it makes more top end power and I can reduce pulley size to make them spin at the rated RPM, but this engine is going to run close to wide open throttle the whole time the tank is out for a spin. So the more I rev the piss out of it the shorter the lifespan, not to mention all the extra heat it'll generate and all the extra fuel I burn. 3600RPM is the factory default like the rest of those engines. They do this for reliability I'm assuming. I think that is a safe number for continuous use. A turbo would just allow the engine to stay up in that range once the pumps and generator start putting a load on it...Hopefully I wont even NEED a turbo. If it runs fine without then why fuck with it other than for the cool factor :noel:
-
Keep in mind, you're not going to be able to just bolt a turbo on. You might be able to put a bigger carb on before the turbo, or get a fuel pump and hook up a boost line to the carb bowl. Just putting boost to a regular gravity fed carb will result in some very lean afrs :?:
-
Why do I not own this?

Why do I not own this?
Should give him a free tune if he comes down to your neck of the woods. :noel:
-
A free fucking knife between the ribs for stealing my tank and posting a build thread of it on my forum.
-
Why do I not own this?
They're not hard to build. Just takes a lot of time and money being pissed away. The end result may or may not be worth it, but it should be something along the lines of this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLxlZ9hJVY4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLxlZ9hJVY4)
As you can see its getting there. I still have a few bugs to work out. I may not need a turbo after all. She does about 1 hour to a tank of fuel or less if I'm on WOT all the time. I still need to make proper idlers for the rear and ditch the pneumatic wheels. I obviously need to finish the turret and all the details on the outside hull including front armor plate and rear engine cover. Right now I'm slowly plugging away on it as winter is around the corner and I'm up to my head in exams at school! Once Christmas break comes I'll have a lot more progress.
PS: Can I get OG status? I think I had 2000 or so posts back on the other site. I dont really care that much about the post count but I am an OG and would like the status.
-
But I still dont see the point in all the extra revs.
HP = Torque * RPM / 5252; If you can keep torque from dropping like a rock, then extra rev's mean more HP.
I'm not talking about spinning to 9k, even though GX200's can do so for an entire season, I'm saying 5-6k max. The way those constant-speed motors is the governor. If there is no load, the governor keeps the throttle open just enough to hold it at 3600 rpm. Adding a load causes RPM's to drop, so the governor open the throttle to compensate. The other benefit is when a huge load is put on the motor and rev's dip - going from 5k to 3k still keeps you in the power band whereas 3.6k to 2k means it will likely stall. As far as reliability, people seriously beat the crap out of the Honda clones for an entire carting season, and they are several pegs lower than true Honda's on every level. Just use decent oil and change it a bit more often than 6 months or 50 hours.
NA or S/C power in this situation will be more desirable. A turbo may not be able to respond fast enough, since it's possible it won't be pegged at full boost while free revving (no load). If you're lucky, you may be able to double the power with a "simple" turbo kit. A few mods (camshaft, carb, flywheel for safety) with a bit more RPM and you can more than double the power, which will also be instant-response power.
-
The hydro system will definitely help with long term durability when it comes to big singles grenading, which they generally do when pushed for a period of time. I think a lot of that has to do with drivetrain shock.
Valve springs, retarding the cam a tooth will push torque up. I did this on a vanguard and noticed a lot of pull but I hit a new rev limiter.. valve float. With springs or shims it could be pushed further. I don't know how hydro pumps would work ungoverned though or how you would control the throttle. Seems like if you were to go for more rpms you would want adjustment in the governor. I don't know what's available in that regard.. I always pull the shit off and run a cable throttle.
Honestly if you find you are low on power I would just find a bigger vtwin and leave it governed or worst case get another single and run one pump off each.
-
Just add spring pressure to the governer arm to raise RPM. Some motors even have multiple holes for spring adjustment, my guess is mostly to account for shitty spring Q.C. (non-Honda). You can also adjust some motors slightly by rotating the base location of the arm on the shaft, but that's tricky. You don't need throttle control on a hydrostatic drive.
FYI most Honda's valve float at an RPM that's higher than the safe limit of the cast flywheels.
-
Quick update. Everything works great and this is the result so far. I have to do a few upgrades on the wheels and suspension over the winter but so far everything is, as Borat would say, "Great Success!"

Unfortunately you'll have to wait a bit. With winter around the corner and -50C temps, there won't be too much progress day to day. But I'm working on it as much as I can. Goal is to have it complete with turret and gun by next fall.

Ok so I'll keep this short for you nogs. Old suspension sucked ass! Moment was too close to the fulcrum and I had more sag than Hotrex's tits. This was due to the fact that the hydraulic conversion put on some extra weight, especially in the back. The new setup requires a lot more force to move the control arm because the spring actually compresses instead of compressing part way and then moving back with the control arm.
The old wheels were getting torn to shreds by the track. I first tried pneumatics when I designed the tank, those didn't last. I then went to the runflats you see in the vids. They were ok but still got pretty torn up and wouldn't last in the long run. So now I said fuck it and started making these. These will probably outlast the entire damn tank.
-
Badass!
-
Building the wheels this week. Need to wait for more hubs to finish the other six. The new plasma machine works like a champ, I would recommend it to anyone. Hopefully the hubs come in before next weekend and I have 12 wheels done and mounted on the tank in two weeks. I still need to clean all the wheels up and sandblast them. I didn't realize how time consuming this was going to be until I started.

New wheels are finally done. I should have the tracks bolted back up by next week. Just have to finish the top guide rollers and rear idler wheels. Because the test wheel turned out looking like shit, I wasn't going to cut holes in the rest of the wheels. They'll still resemble a variation I found of the real ones. The whole idea behind this is to get it "good enough" and have nice strong wheels.
The real ones

I used stuff called UHMW (think it stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) Its very tough, cuts like a hardwood and its very abrasion resistant.

Finished a few more things over Christmas break, such as the front light covers, the suspension detail and the electrical slip ring for the turret (12v will be on copper ring and ground will be on aluminum turret bearing base transferred via carbon brushes)

Couple more from last week. Finished up some minor detail like lifting loops on the upper hull, changed the handles on the hatches to more scale looking ones, gun travel lock mounts and the rub rail on the bottom edge of the hull. I had finished the idler wheels a while ago but forgot to post them up.

That is all till about march! I'm busy with exams and wont start any more work till then. Things you can expect after are more outside hull details and the start of my turret. The main gun will also be in the works as I build my turret, kinda have to build one with the other so they can work together flawlessly.

That starting to look like a real tank.... awesome, keep it coming this could the new RHMT pr0n :noel:

Too bad theres no turbo on it, or it very well could of been.

Electrical system almost done! Need to mount and wire in a small DC generator, an intake fan on the front and that is it for the wiring until I build the turret. I have exterior lights, hydraulic coolers and gauges all working. More progress to come soon. This is just a sneak peek... and yes I know, real Sherman never had HID's ;DDD

Not sure I'm catching what you mean by that...Fuck its late.
Better get some shut eye. Making a generator bracket proved to be a pain in the ass today. I'll finish it tomorrow and hopefully I'll have some better progress pics Sunday.

Edit: first off I apologize for the upside down pictures. There must be an error with the code. Every time I try to fix it photobucket reverts back to the wrong orientation.
Wiring and switches complete, generator installed and new exhaust system built using a muffler from a Lexus LX400. Much quieter and less annoying now. I can finally hear the hydraulics. By pure luck the generator puts out 13.5V at full throttle. Just where I wanted it. Need to get a blocking diode now and I think that will be it for the generator wiring unless you guys can think of anything I may be missing. Its a DC motor being used as a generator so its pretty straight forward. Gauges were narrowed down to the essentials. The panel under the switches will house a CB radio and a cup holder eventually. Speaking of which...Anybody got a small CB radio kicking around collecting dust that I could have? ;DDD

I know its been a while...I've been busy building the new seat which proved to be a pain in the ass and took about a week. The actuator is made by mating a 92-95 Honda Civic wiper motor to a 86 Toyota Landcruiser jack. Its slow as shit with gobs of torque. Barely slows down when I'm in it. But it does take around a minute to reach the full 9" travel. The main structure is made from angle iron, flat bar and some really heavy duty drawer sliders. The whole thing is over engineered as I cant have it failing. That would involve having to remove the gun and turret to get at the seat. Fully down my head will be just inside the turret and I can close the hatch. Fully up and my head will be sticking out of the hatch with my chin being level with the top of the turret.

I've been doing a fair amount of work on the lower frontal armor and rear engine cover because I want those done before I start the turret. So bare with me. I'll have more soon! The tank should be done late summer if all goes well.

Waiting for some parts. Taking vacations, going on camping expeditions, etc etc. Jeez, I've got a life besides the tank. That said I'm also finishing another project I had on the go. The tank will be getting worked on in the fall months. All I have left is the turret/gun.
