I have been working on an old Ford truck and really need to get underneath it for patch panels ect. So I decided to build my own rotisserie! You can buy these at over $1k but I am poor white trash and the guy I am building this for wants it done on the cheap. So first thing I did was go to harbor freight and pick up 2 engine stands with coupons. Also picked up some casters. Here is the price break down so far:
Engine stands(x2) $40 with coupons :)
Casters (2 swivel and 2 straight at 375lb capacity) $18
Shop scrap... Free
The first thing I did was was cut off the piece of the engine stand that is positioned vertical because it will need to be lengthened to get enough room for car bodies and such.
Next I drilled two 1/2" holes in the side of it so it can be taken apart later
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-26_22-38-16_481.jpg&hash=026b161f98de83f5b4e167ec75d9dcdfed3ca635)
The holes are 3.6" apart if anyone wanted to know.
I did the same to the lower bar that slides into it
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-26_23-43-11_910.jpg&hash=0703ae53f312acb9736dd77fd333cdc4a04969c7)
This shows what it should look like when drilled
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-26_23-47-50_201.jpg&hash=b3fd4c18d15b69a00c7fe5a5f425585959336f1f)
There was some 4" sqaure stock laying around that I am going to use as the base. Now this is ENTIRELY OVERKILL! This metal is super beefy but it was scrap so I used it. The main idea of whatever material you use is to make it roughly 5 feet long so the whole damn thing doesn't tip over on you when you try to spin in.
Here is a piece of scrap I used to space the lower part
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-27_01-25-38_209.jpg&hash=333bce7e685f6802aceac97c950f20966a145880)
Here it is welded together
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-27_01-22-46_376.jpg&hash=511a8c116d3b6e5a52ca920b9f6cf86eda377fda)
Here are the casters welded together

Here is what I have so far
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-27_01-24-31_642.jpg&hash=4437a790b6e4b07e04f449e31b4bbdb41efeeeaf)
Now the tricky part to me attaching this monstrosity to the truck cab is that the lower cab mounts are rotted. I found a nice place to attach it where the fender wells are bolted to the cab
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-27_02-09-38_183.jpg&hash=66f21e3970bcade6438bfb409ca87c85b8de1d43)
Solidworks model was made and converted to .dxf file for plasma CAM
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-27_02-12-44_479.jpg&hash=44ffec2736fa164866a5371805ef4ed968f4e2fc)
Cut it out from some beefy stock in the scrap pile and it looks like this
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-27_02-09-50_728.jpg&hash=fc6184d7aa273451447cc8ed233ec5bc8866444d)
Here is what it looks like bolted in
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-27_02-10-03_214.jpg&hash=dc4b64b4b9737a956b204a34717f3ff121bbf612)
So that is as far as I got today. I will need to make the other side soon and get some more materials to finish the arms to mount everything.
-
Watching this. I have been considering building one lately too
-
I've always wanted one. I've seen guys use engine stands before. I would like to know total cost when all done.
-
Are you keeping track of cost?
-
Are you keeping track of cost?
Yes. I will list what everything cost. It might be misleading because I have already used a lot of scrap and I am going to try and get the rest of the material at a metal scrap yard.

For those of us who use our sawzalls for more than just dildos...

I like the wood idea. It's cheap!
-
So I got a little farther today.
Here I cut up a piece of that gangster 4" square stock
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-29_17-59-49_771.jpg&hash=d0f78ca6c3c93af2067366e238ed946254ae8230)
Here is the other one with casters
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-29_20-51-27_487.jpg&hash=b2a07c1a22f6fac0876fed0020f15b2de43fa91e)
Tomorrow I will be picking up some metal at the scrap yard to finish this
-
Just picked up some metal:
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-30_16-52-11_993.jpg&hash=b7853487615aee5c41337bd1f0bc9fa36ddd7b9f)
24 feet of 3 inch square stock. One piece of rectangularish channel at ~10ft. This only cost me $5!!!! :Jew: :Jew: :Jew: :Jew: :Jew:
-
That's a deal
-
WTF why so cheap!!!!??????
-
The guy that priced it at the scrapyard seemed to be busy and said $5. I started to explain to him again what I had and he said $5. Not arguing with that haha.
-
So I got a bit farther today. Here is the progress:
Found some 1/2" 13 bolts and luck nuts in the bolt bin. Score
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-31_18-15-57_578_zpsb978593f.jpg&hash=161825d1931196c07edbb565b4eb0cd8ecfd50cf)
Indexed the vertical piece on the engine stand and drilled some holes
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-31_20-41-52_237_zps16d52cc1.jpg&hash=a98787822c0c1cac0194889d214628aae5f777e8)
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-31_20-48-00_888_zps70447f56.jpg&hash=05bb8dedc08c7611dfe40102c75cc17a42f9334b)
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-31_20-58-57_674_zpsef76a780.jpg&hash=36392dd9233439c852ccea85968deae31e79ee4d)
The holes were spaced 6" apart
Because I am balling on a budget here I have to work with this for the vertical piece that needs to be extended
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-01-31_18-18-56_929_zpsdf782503.jpg&hash=d1495a36e00df8344ad7739f5f934e2ddd706d4e)
To make up for the gap, I made some stand-offs to get the spacing correct
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-02-01_02-58-43_210_zpsa8a5a563.jpg&hash=a82e9820f5138c09a7bd38802b1936a29442233a)
Now I indexed this piece and drilled some more holes! These were spaced 3" apart so the height can be adjusted
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-02-01_01-23-20_915_zps8b514e1d.jpg&hash=ee2bfbefe77d026dbb38bfe80c5fef88d77f3c61)
This is where I am at now
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi654.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu270%2FMethodwake%2F2013-02-01_03-04-23_945_zpsd3bf34b4.jpg&hash=125f211bde6d1824eafa83a4cef7943969e3dc15)
More to come
-
Liking this. It's like a good story. I'm waiting for the next post
-
So I am near completion on the rotisserie. Here is how far I made it
The hardest part of welding the vertical piece on is getting everything square. It's close :)

What are the projects in the background? More info?

The other projects are FSAE chassis build and BAJA SAE chassis build.

Measured out another piece of my $5 stock to connect both stands at the bottom. I am getting close to flipping this upside down.
-
Figured I would show the completion to my $100 rotisserie.
Fixturing everything together was a pain in the ass. It is crazy how old ass tools like plumb bobs work great for stuff like this.

That's awesome. Plumb bobs are one of those things that we will use till humans no longer exist. When I took a machining class, the first project was to make a plumb bob on a lathe.
-
Ive used plumb Bob's on every house I've ever built. They work, simple as that.
