this is a cbr600rr frame we just did a repair on.

before:

jigging the damaged hole:

cut off the damaged hole, make a new piece and fit it into the jig:

all done:

Looks pretty good, but is it me or is the weld a bit small for the area? I would be placing a larger bead to try and get as much surface area as i could to keep it from cracking.

I could be wrong as i weld aluminum quite infrequently.

i know that aluminum is cheaper/easier to manufacture then chromoly tubing but the shit is just too brittle.

Brittle? it's welded aluminum theres really not much to it. Only thing i don't like is the bead size is a bit on the small size for my taste, but then again i like big weave passes on stuff like this. Which could be overkill.

but look at most aluminum frames if not all of them, there welded in spots so..... whats the fuss.

looks like its just an engine mount? if thats the case then its not a big deal. even if it did break it wouldnt cause loss of control.

a clean tittle fram for a 600cc bike is about 1k$
and that frame must have taken a vary hard hit to need a whole pice to be fabed/reweled.

Its just the front engine mounting hole. @ 100hp i doubt that fuckers gonna crack off.

If it was the swingarm mounting hole, then i would think twice about getting that fixed.

The weld looks a tad cold but not bad, my biggest worry is that that whole area after welding will be annealed. It should be sent out for heat treating to regain some strength, otherwise its gonna be soft as shit.

some of the 05-06 1000s found small cracks in the head of the frame after a bad crash. the fix is just a small brace above the motor.
