Watching Ken Block jump one over 150ft is pretty cool, but the only guy I know that is hardcore into them, spends more time working on it then driving it.

i have drove a wrx and a sti and i loved the way both of them drove.  they look like they can be a pita to work on though.

i was in the market for one, and i couldn't find one of these bodystyles

there are none to be had.  i looked on ebay motors when i was hunting, and only 2 four doors were available, but there were thrashed.  people hold onto these like hype-r's.  i wont be getting a wrx anytime soon either.

yea i know, not for love or money.  you can score awd legecy's pretty cheap.  but they are heavy pigs and not 'sport'

I think they sound bad and are slow as fuck from a roll.  No subarus ever want to race me on the freeway when I throw a rev at them.  They know their position in the pecking order.

I know I would get owned by a subaru through some twistys though. But even with good tires they can still hardly out launch me, 315 drag radials pwnz

I have owned 2 subarus, both failed on me. My buddy puts a new motor in about twice a year in his subarus. I know of no subarus that can be drivin like many drive there hondas.  :?:

I do miss my subaru though.  :-\ I had a 2.5RS

Worked for them for 5 years. One of the only (if not the only) auto maker that is actually up this year (3%)  My old man drives a Legacy GT with an access port, cobb bars and a K&N intake...loves it

Clutch is heavy as hell for a stocker, but the car has been reliable.

older 4 cam N/A motors are prone to eating headgaskets, and the H6's used to eat tranny's... 1st year WRX's (02) have shitty first gear syncros and clutch chatter problems.

I took a 04 to the strip one night for a test and tune.. Dumped the clutch on the rev limiter about 20 times.. no issues. Best I could get out of it with a DP and air intake was a 14.3 @ 96 ..kinda weaksauce.

Sold the car 3 days later.

Favorite demo was a 05  Forest turbo 5spd... that thing ripped for a breadbox.

I've never seen a make of car with such chronic defective injector problems aside from the last generation 300ZX.  Oil flow problems throughout the engine causing repeated engine/turbo failures and ACVS codes.  Weak rods prone to part across the beam when compression downshifting or snapping the throttle shut at high rpm.  Oil burners by design.  Weak gearboxes with a shitty feel to the shifter than people who don't know what a gearbox should feel like confuse for a good shifting unit.  Any sensor/actuator fails, that'll be about a buck fifty.

I got my 2002 WRX a few weeks ago.  Working on it is kinda a PITA IMHO.

changed the plugs ~2hrs
changed the motor mounts ~3hrs
changed the up-pipe ~4hrs

changing the clutch slave took my like 2hrs b/c I couldnt get the goddamn TMIC off and on.

couldnt do a comp test because I couldnt get the hose to thread into the head

gets 18mpg city and i'm getting about 16in vac at idle, gotta try and find a vac leak.  It's got a new o2 sensor.

Since I put on the up-pipe and downpipe the turbo makes a lot of turbo noise.  I'm not sure if it's b/c the downpipe is thin or if I've got an exhaust leak

Why did you sell reliable Toyota/Mazda ifferings to buy a piece of shit, Jesse?

just wanted something different.  I've had lots of cars, not a lot of Subarus.  Well technically this is my 3rd Subaru but i've never modded one.  This is my first factory turbo'ed car and my first AWD car.  If it's anything like my other cars, I probably will get tired of it and sell it in 6mo-1yr.

There are more respectable hobbies than Subarus, sir.  I'd look down on you less if you went to gaybars, or bought a K-series.

Wrx is ugly, sounds retarted, parts are costly, and difficult to work on.
I wouldn't even consider any car that took me more than 10min to change the plugs.
That being said the new Forester looks like a nice new car.

I only own Legacies.  About 4 of them currently.   ;D

Taking out the family wagon Friday, should be in the 12's?  It probably weighs in (with me) at 3300lbs?  if not more?

Yeah, I love my Legacies....

I'd rock a 90s naturally aspirated EJ22 legacy in a heartbeat, I've seen enough of those with 1.9 million miles on them to know they're good stuff.  But the turbo cars... have some design issues.

A little thing of epoxy/jb weld. comes in a little cup, you push it out and mix it together.

Anyways, yeah...subies. Piles of fail. Someone mentioned the forester. A turbo/5spd forester I would be interested in.  :?:

no, you are physically hearing the wastegate through the exhaust.  not it leaking

im saying as soon as there's any load on the motor.  at 10" vac I can hear it loud and clear

Fucking fail, dude.  Those 1.8 leakers may run forever but you put more $$ in oil into them than a new car payment, and they're gutless.

I'd take a turbo carby pushrod brat from the super early 80s.

The original EJ, respect.  Oil pumps are a bit gimpy but goddamn they scream when turbocharged.  7 psi on an RHB5 and Dave's old 4WD model was probably as fast as the beater was (RIP).  That's extra funny when you consider 3rd gear is 1:1 ration and 4th and 5th are both OD gears.

I had a 1987 gl10 SEDAN (TURBO) BACK IN 92-93. Had Mud and snow tires on it and converted the adjustable ride heigth deall to manual so i could asjust it to where I wanted it without the little compressor making it so stiff and high it was gay. Push button 4WD and locker in the front if i remember right... I lived in Tahoe at the time....  THAT CAR WAS A FUCKING BEAST IN THE SNOW...

Also had a K5 blazer lifted with all the usual shit.. The GL-10 put that thing to shame in the winter.... I never drove the blazer And because I'm an intellectual being,  for the summer...

The GL was nuts in the snow I NEVER once got stuck in it, had multiple people sware theyd never go up highway 20 witrh me after riding in thst car in up it in the snow...

4 wheel drifts at 50 mph were no problem, very predictable and with the little ass snail power was a reaql kick in the ass...

93 legacy turbo.
stock turbo
automatic
4wd
I bought it with 139,000 miles in new york for $700 completely stock.
I added a wrx intercooler, a 1g dsm modded bov, msd dis2, homemade fuel cut defender to be able to boost past 12 lbs of boost, xs turbo manual boost controller, pt cruiser wheels, and colder spark plugs.
I sold it a few months ago to a buddys 19 year old sister with 169,000 miles on the odometer for $400. I spoke to her a week later and she said "this thing is fast and I love that noise it makes when I step into the gas pedal." I guess it would feel fast with 16 lbs of boost and that small ass turbo making for a lack of boost lag.

That being said the new Forester looks like a nice new car.

IMO the 05 STi is the best looking car in it's class, so to speak. I just wish you could get the evo underpinnings with the wrx shell. I just never liked the overly-large cabin look of the evo. It's sad about the oil issues though. Even with forged cranks, it appears the crank length they decided on (super-short) is what causes the high-rpm oil failures due to flex.

Honestly this shit is why I stick to Hondas. They may not make tons of torque, or have a practical RWD/AWD daily driver chassis you can make fast for cheap, but they end up being fast & reliable. Everything else is failure prone, slow/heavy, expensive, or just not practical for romping to/from work.
Title: Re: Subarus
Post by: Joseph Davis on June 26, 2009, 01:24:46 AM
Wrong.  Miatas and SC300/400 are stupid cheap and easy to make scoot.  Then there are oddball platforms a little more expensive than a Honduh/Miata/SC that can be made fast relatively cheaply like the turbo MR2s - really fucking wierd rides, but the drivetrain is stout and they hook like a motherfucker.
Title: Re: Subarus
Post by: Joseph Davis on June 26, 2009, 12:52:51 PM
Nothing is as failure prone as a turbo Scooby.

They will always be slow, it's the inherent worthlessness of the design

As far as expensive, I just watched a kid fork out $2000 yesterday for a bunch of fancy bolt on intake/charge pipe/exhaust parts that in no way shape or form makes his STi faster.  Oh, it's an 07, so it'll shit a piston... probably before the parts arrive and are installed.

AWD is hype, a dinky ass chihuahua head sized turbo is not worth acknowledging the existence of, you're right there with Johnny claiming 30+ mpg out of a platform known to get less, and the complete LACK OF PERFORMANCE and LACK OF BUILD QUALITY do not make it practical.

BTW, Corvairs don't blow up, Nader is just a faggot.

Took my 1990 FAMILY fulled loaded Legacy wagon to PIR tonight.  Having some issues with bog/misfire starting at about 4500 rpm in 3rd, all through 4th, suspect plug gap....

But.....

The dailydevil, all 3400 estimated lbs of it, went pretty quick. My best trap was 104.8 mph @ 13.6.

Best overall

60' 1.895
1/8 8.552

1/4 13.365
