D17 Headgasket BS
« on: November 27, 2011, 11:27:22 PM »

Buddy has a 01 civic that he got for next to nothing and has been dailying for a while.
It has a brand new rad and good hoses. We just bled the shit out of it so it doesn't have any airlocks to fuck it up.
His "mechanic" told him that it had the start of a bad HG since it was boiling/pressurizing the coolant.

Are these bitches prone to shitting head gaskets? or is there some other issue that I should be looking for?

I think I know the answer to this, but some porn right about now sure would jog my memory.

If you reuse headbolts or a mls headgasket on them, there's a chance it won't go down so well. Otherwise they only blow HG's if you blow a hose, overheat, and warp the head. Honda is not immune to heads warping.

Hondas like to crack heads, which pushes out coolant, D15 automatics do this A LOT!

I just did one one a D17.  Head was warped and a valve was chipped.  Definitely get a machinist to check the head for flatness, mill it if it needs it.  Just got it back together, timing belt tensioner is kinda funky.  Will check compression tomorrow maybe.  Hopefully its all good, a few of the head bolts were kinda noisy going in.

It is 5 Speed. It's still on the original HG AFAIK, but he bought the car off some chick who hit a deer or something which raped the rad support, rad and a head light, so a warped head is definitely a possibility.
