I guess they can do that in places where you have ~1% relative humidity. Just pray some big rat/bug doesn't hide in or chew the wires...

Fuck that, MacGyver would have used a nickel and set of jumper cables.

An AC stick welder is really that simple. All it is is a step down transformer. If you look into this you will find out that you can build one from romex wire from home depot,a roll of steel banding material, and a roll of masking tape.

true but how do you control the amperage?  i would love to wind my own welder from wire but the welding industry which makes welding machines takes care of that for us

would either make the secondary coil movable or use the center tap method. Basically you would wrap a bunch of banding material in a hoop and rool it up a bunch of times. If you can run some masking tape between each layer that would be a plus. Then you would wrap the whole roll in tape. Then for the primary VS secondary coils you would want about a three(primary) to one(secondary).120 windings on primary and 40 windings would equal 30v on a 120v circuit or 60v on 220v. Generally you would want 30 or so volts and you will have a decent amp.

Now if you tap into the secondary every 10 coils or so you will be able to adjust voltage and amps by which set of how many coils you choose.
