EJ8 build thread. the never ending flip flopper project
« on: June 05, 2009, 06:30:23 PM »

Why hello sirs! My old build thread went down with xenofags sellout. I'll skip all the actual previous work and start at where I am now with a very vague introduction, since I plan on doing so much more I figured WHY NOT?!

Some of you probably remember the build, but it's so common very few will remember the details.

it started like this:
B16A 9:1 pistons
T3/T04E 57 trim
dog turd drag manifold
dsm 450's
etc.

ran like a champ until the turbo started smoking and blowing oil out of the dp.

picked up this from a member here for $260 shipped

decided to continue running the blown garrett because i'm not very environmentally friendly

picked up great mid-range from the new manifold.. it actually helped spool time too

then I came across this beautiful HX35 brand new.. for $170 shipped.

had some problems with fitment.. not only was the wastegate palcement an issue, but the compressor wasn't clearing the cross member

got this idea from Whitey and MADMAX

used 3" stainless steel.. more info about this in my thread in fabrication

everything fit first time.. had my local exhaust shop weld it up at no cost

turned the EVO intercooler into a backdoor entrance.. spent $30 total

did some tuning

and this is how she sits

Things that I will be updating on over the following weeks:

3" V-band down pipe (running 2.5" since it's all I had at the time)
3" Thermal exhaust (was waiting until I make the 3" downpipe)
reducing IAT since the sinktrap is close to my IC backdoor entrance
DIY water/meth injection system
traction bars made w/ weirs kit
upgrading to ectune  ;D

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ostrich rom emulator ON THE WAY
quick spool valve prototype. being machined
Dragger clutch from mike@LSD  ON THE WAY
780cc injectors
electronic boost control
aluminum radiator

yeppp, always have.. haven't blown up a motor yet

I haven't messed with timing yet, so I leave it conservative and use JDs advice about b16's loving timing, so I added a few degrees in vacuum where they lack power.. definitely helps a bit.I may visit sewell when I step up and try for 450whp

I could have pointed you to a Humphrey valve in the $35 shipped range, with fittings.  I like the AEM/MACs, but they are pricey.

gayballs.. the middle stud for my fuel rail snapped in two last night when installing my 780s, so now I can't get them to seal under pressure. after class i'm going to pick up an LS intake manifold to get me on the road quicker. god dammit

on a brighter note, it's ma birth day nigs!

but the studs do.

or you can buy a new stud at any auto store worth a shit for cheap.

Either way vise grips take out what's left of the old stud in no time.

I did the same thing and double nutted the good studs so I could get back on the road.  Swapped b16 studs onto my LS and then back once I swapped engines.

big difference in spool time with the sinktrap over just the mini ram? ive been debating on building a sinktrap for my ls turbo.  im running the 18.5 h1c, with the comp side that looks just like your hx35, so the big h1c i guess you would call it. right now i get full boost at like 4200-4400 with the drag cast mani.

Im really diggin your build. Fucking tits. You should be able to do the double nut trick to get those fucking studs out, try that before the vice grips. Just remember when you fuck with a car, shit like that happens all the time. When I was taking out my IM, the middle bolt was fucking stripped, so I had to use a dremel on it for a good 15 mins to get it free.

Anyways keep us updated man.

If you run a 4-2 upper manifold and feed a split tang turbo like an HX35, the spool time will be better.

If you run a conventional/common collector design... flow dynamics change a lot manifold to manifold, but the general trend is the more manifold volume the laggier the spool so expect it to hit later.  Might be super minor, might be a good bit.  My money is on 4-500 rpms later, if you run a big up pipe that can support a good sized turbo, like I would do.

thread jack but yeah

yeah my h1c has the split housing, and id be basing it off a stock LS exhaust mani which is the 4-2 top piece. and id keep her split up to the turbo. or i can just keep the mani i have now and not worry about it cracking apart... WOO!!

well, I went from the mini ram using a T3/T04E which had almost instant spool, to the sink trap using 3" up to the HX35 12cm housing, and then 2.5" down pipe.. yeah definitely a decrease in spool time, but it hauls a lot more ass after 5k rpm.

if you're daily driving, why not just stick with the drag mani if your spool time is that good?

I'll be looking for big numbers soon, so that's why I chose the bigger 3" pipe for my sink trap. most would use 2.5", but if you do the math, the volume of each runner on manifolds combined equals out to be a lot more than just 2.5", it's closer to 4" of volume total.
