I rebuilt one of those not too long ago for an old ford truck with a big block. Seemed like an ok carb as far as stock carbs go.

Fucking rebuild kit for these is out of hand. They want $90 for one. That's half way to a set if hiprofile injectors.

So on Sunday I went over to my folks house and pulled the Holley 750 off the 428 and slapped it on. Car fired right up and idled perfect. Was pulling 20" of vac @ 800 rpms. Was only able to pull 12" with the other carb. This carb runs rich as shit when im driving so if i was to keep this carb I would need to swap out jets and then see how it goes from there. So I pulled it out if the garage and washed it up and drove it to work the next day with a trip permit. I got to talking with a friend at work and he said he has a Holley 600 that has a blown power valve that I could have. Turns out its a 80457. And I got it for free :) So it takes your basic Holley rebuild that only cost $30 from the local autoparts store. So im going to pick that up today.

On the way home from work it sounded like I had a rear brake shoe dragging. About 2 blocks from my house I hit a bump and it sounded like the rear exploded and then a metal lath. So since I was only 2 blocks from my house I limped it home and jacked it up pulled the wheel and drum and one of the brake shoe hold down pins had broke and all springs came loose and was sitting in the bottom of the drum. Along with a bunch of chewed up pieces. The drum face was fine along with the shoes, but I need new hardware. So it now has all new hardware and no more noise.

So the next thing to do is replace the rear shock bushings because when I hit the slightest bump it sounds like someone hits the underside with a hammer. Pretty sure its the shock bushings or leaf spring bushings.

But other than that the car drives great and is real quiet. I also have an appointment with the state patrol on the 10th for them to hopefully sign off on it and I can register it with the department of licensing.

You are better off with a 600cfm carb for that engine any ways.

There is a such thing as too big of a carb for an engine.

Unless you you are getting 100% V.E. + and reving to 8k that 750cfm would not be a good daily driving carb for ya.  :noel:

Yeah I know. even with the old shitty 600 I had on there the throttle response was way better. But then again I'm sure the squirters on this are way to big. Along with everything else. I men it did come off and engine that's almost 100ci bigger, and this carb has been tuned for that engine. I just more or less wanted to see if my carb was the problem..... and it was.

So.......... pulled the free carb apart and regasketed the whole thing along with cleaning everything out. Put it on and the rear plug on the side of the bowl thats pressed in from holley is pissing fuel out of it. I mean like across the driveway....lol  So I ended up pulling the rear bowl from the old shitty carb I had laying around. Slammed it on the rebuilt carb and put it on the car and it is leak free for now.

I'm too lazy to re-read, isn't the free carb a 750? You really need a 600 on there.

I have an edelbrock 600 on my 270hp/350tq crate motor in my truck. It's perfect. I paid $250 at auto zone for it brand new. Bolted it on, set the idle and its perfect. Haven't touched it otherwise

Well I have a whopping $30 into this carb. And that was just for the rebuild. If I had an extra $300 kicking around I would just go pick up a new Holley and be done with it. But I'm broke as fuck right now, and this project is about done for the year. Ive put as much into it as I can and then some for this year. Only other bit of money Im allowing is to register/tab it.

So no matter what I do I can't get this carb to come off the high idle cam. I can push it down and it idles perfect. But as soon as I blip the throttle it snaps itself right back onto high idle again. So I think I'm gonna loosen it up and spin it back to where its all the way open so I can get this fucker to the dyno day.

Well I think I got the choke figured out. Overall I put about 8 miles on it today. Gonna drive it to work tomorrow and do a rhmt garage alignment once I get home. And then maybe do a little a little tuning. Overall besides wanting to suck me into the ditch on the right(if I let go of the steering wheel) It drives pretty good.

Fuck yeah, this thing runs pretty good now.(knocks on wood)

First thing I needed to do was a front end alignment. So 2 bricks, a string line and a tape measure and its dialed in pretty good.

Reshimed the starter because it was grinding and sounded like total shit.

Pulled the carb and replaced the rear plate with metering block. Started with 74 jets and it was still only droping into the 14s for afrs and by 5k it was dropping to 13.5ish. I slamed in 76s instead and now it pulls mid 13 and by 5k afrs are a solid 13ish.

Next I had to pull my dizzy and tap my manifold because my dizzy hold down bolt was stripped out and the dizzy was walking timing on its own. So I tapped it for the 3/8" bolt instead of a 5/16" bolt. So now the dizzy locked down for a base of 16° it is all in by 2500 and it advances to 36° it barks 2nd and 3rd when it shifts. Pulls nice and smooth.

So now its all loaded up and ready for the dyno day.

And it got 19mpg on the hwy. A lot better than I expected. Was thinking I would be lucky if I would be able to get 15 or 16.

The only funky thing is that under real light throttle (like 15% and 16-20" vac) during cruise the afr's are in the mid 13's. But under light load (going up a slight incline 25-35% ish 10-16" vac) it pulls my afrs back up to around the 14.8-15.3 range. But then when I lean on it a little more the power valve kicks in and pulls it down to 13.5ish and when the secondary's kick in its down around the low 13.1-12.7 ish. Just don't know how to lean it out during real light load without fucking up the rest of the part throttle tune. Other than that, this thing cruises down the hwy great. my timing is all in by 2500, and my vac advance cranks another 20* in so with my base set at 16* I'm running a total of 56* ish and my motor seems to love every minute of it during cruise. My rpms seem to be around 2600-2800 between 60-70 mph.

It's a carb.  They are only good at atomizing fuel better than most traditional injectors, and repeatable WOT AFRs... as long as weather/altitude stays the same.  Now you know why folks convert to fuel injection.  You could probably score a TPI intake, dist, harness and have a good experience for cheap.

Oh, yeah.  There's a lot of quirks with even cyl distribution on V8s.  Tune the NA ones to 12.8:1 , not critical on your current stocker but anything hot will last a lot longer, and might lose 1% of peak power.

Thanks jd. I'm thinking I'm gonna just rock it this way through the summer and when I park it for the winter pick up a Tpi setup and do a little triming in the engine bay to make a set of headers fit. And if all goes well with that then probobaly slap a turbo setup on it and go from there
