I went to haiti several years ago. Oddly enough, the images on TV aren't much different than the pictures I took when I was there. The US dumping 100mil into the joint is ...well, not surprising.
It was a shithole before the rumble, it will be a shithole after.

This is a complex social issue that requires pages of thought and consideration to make a valid point.
1) Comparing Katrina to Haiti is like comparing a gang shooting to a mass genocide. Katrina had roughly 1900 deaths and 800 people still missing. The assumption in Haiti is that the death toll will easily be 50k+. Katrina was a mere inconvenience compared to this earthquake.
2) To give $10 to them does not mean you can't give $20 to a local charity. $100 million dollars in aid is not a lot of money considering what we spend on a regular basis on bullshit things in America. As much as I believe in taking care of our country first, part of being a 1st world country is providing aid in this types of situations. I also don't have a huge issue offering this type of aid because we squander so much money away on an annual basis, that $100 million dollars will actually be put to use. I'd rather see money be spent being productive rather than the alternative. What we should be doing is cracking down on the American gov't spending on BS and allow this type of spending. If you think about it, we spend something like $250 million a day in Iraq/Afghanistan DAILY. You think $100 million is a lot? Com'on.
3) Haiti is a fucked up place. It has been for a long time. It's almost a blessing this happened. Its a great time for investors to come in and build an infastructure on supporting gov'ts dime to build a nice vacation spot not so far away from America.
Social darwinism is a bitch, but honestly, I think if this happened in my neighborhood, I don't know if my house could survive the 50+ earthquakes. That's with decent American construction to code.

You can't just drum up tires and asphalt to fix roads. Owning a car isn't a common thing. am i the only one who noticed the complete lack of rebar in all the concrete pourings? it literally looks like they just hoisted slabs of concrete and slapped a concrete slab roof on top, much like building blocks. i don't see the point in rushing all this aid, they're just going to build more retardedly engineered buildings and the same shit will happen in 20 years when the next quake hits.

That's the first thing I saw when I saw the pictures. Lots of broken concrete, no rebar. I just looked at some more pics and still, I see no rebar in anything.
On the topic of concrete and rebar, when me and my dad rebuilt our house after Katrina, we had to make a new foundation for it and raise the house to meet new flood requirements. We poured over 60 yards of concrete building the foundation. Has a checkerboard matrix of 2'x2' concrete with a solid 2'x2' perimeter, all 2' below the ground. with 33 concrete columns coming out of it to support the house. Our city has strict building codes (we're in a V zone too) and we still overbuilt. We needed 22 columns, we have 33'. We went up one size on the rebar, and doubled the amount of rebar in some places. We added LOTS of extra brackets that tie the concrete to the sills, sills to walls, walls to top plate, top plate to rafters, etc.
I'm just glad I don't live in haiti.

I have to agree to some extent. We (the US) can't solve everybody else's problem. We can't police the world. It's unfortunate that a lot of Haitian's died from this. But it's not our responsibility to send in an army to help rebuild, and give them money and food, and try to build them a government the way we think it should be, or anything else. Sound familiar?

my aunts house was as close to the epicenter of the 6.8'er the seattle area had in '01, and aside from some cracked drywall and other things like that, it was fine.

There's a difference in a house and a 10 story+ building. My house I could get under my desk or just stand in a door way. The shitty construction practices there caused those building supports to blow out causing it to collapse. Now they are talking about how many more orphans there are now on top of the overwhelming amounts there were previously. There is so much irony in this thread. Many are too busy pointing fingers at people for popping out children, not working, not paying taxes, and having no ambition. These people should really examine their own country and their own ways. How many members on here are currently unemployed, or barely making ends meet to raise illegitimate children, or living highly leveraged with debt? I am no fan of America being the world's "protector" nor do I approve of the continual bleeding out of money we continue to view as morally justifiable. However, rational discussion of these aspects can only further mutual understanding and work toward a consensus course of action.
I have maintained for the longest time that the root cause of all problems is lack of education. Educated people make more money, comport themselves to a higher standard, do not have children indiscriminately, and generally have lives worth living. I advocate 90% of the safety nets and handouts be removed from this country's infrastructure and half that money goes towards education. The entirety of non-emergency handouts to foreign countries subsist solely of education. There are a number of notable people who go out and do well for themselves with very minimal education, but they are very common-sense oriented people who can take care of themselves already.
Cut the safety net out from under the rest of them and let them fall. They aren't doing anything useful anyway.

What was true about the character of people was true thousands of years ago is still true today - the same goes for the cities they live in. We have more technology, vast accumulations of knowledge and other staples of modern times but in reality we still live at the crossroads with merchants, nobles, and the like. Our social classes have evolved, changed names, and (some of us) have stopped bowing to the wills of conspicuous lords but the same systems of power realistically exist today.
Having grown up in the cities of Moscow, Kiev, and New York, I can say that in my experience, there are still centers to modern cities, both in the sense of political powerhouses and general public centers for socializing and entertainment. In Moscow and Kiev likely due to the shadow of the Soviet regime, there was sometimes the sense of living in an ancient city much like those described by the authors - there were poor farmers from outside the city who would come within its walls to peddle their wares only to return back to their less than glamorous lives in the poorer suburbs at the end of the day. The same cobblestone roads from years gone by carry modern traffic into and out of the city, to both updated and outdated versions of cathedrals, factories and merchant quarters.
Many people spend their lives attempting to acquire whatever wealth they can so that they are able to move into the city, where to outsiders and the non-city poor opportunities seem to be endless and a certain sense of hope and possibility exists. At the same time, people within the cities who are also struggling often seek to escape the drudgery of a modern industrial city where it is easy to feel like a piece of a machine, only to feel just as unable to leave as the outsiders who want in. Just like the landowners of centuries past who could barely make enough money to get by and hoped to save enough to buy their way into accepted society within a city, the average person today has infinitely more wealth yet the same level of social immobility and are equally unable to move themselves OUT into a house with a white picket fence, or IN to an apartment with a view of the skyline.
Also, cities are built around whatever they are built around. You can justify the existence of NYC any way you want - you can claim it came about for religious reasons by stretching towards the pilgrim bit, claim its built around merchants, perhaps the fact that it was at a literal crossroad between the south and northeast, but the fact remains that cities can kind of just spring up because people tend to swarm like ants on a sugar cube whether the sugar is real or imagined, and then stay wherever they gathered for generations because we are stubborn and don't know when to move on.

So after a little research into the Haiti "thing" I'm really coming back around to my stance on world education. It seems Haiti is 80% Catholic, which is a doctrine that discourages birth control or family planning (overpopulation) and encourages the individual to accept suffering (no motive to better yourself). No wonder the place is a humanitarian train wreck, they're in the dark ages.
There is a HUGE religious charity/support infrastructure already in place their handing out aid in the form of "taking care" of the populace and religious placebo, instead of teaching the populace to take care of itself. It's not just federal money that's been dumped into the place and misappropriated, but private funds as well. Until the money is handed out wisely, instead of the usual contractor graft kickback get rich schemes, I see absolutely NO benefit from further aid beyond the immediate clusterfuck of assistance going in there right now - that we can't even distribute properly because everyone attached to the situation is a fool.

Um, again, everyone has a breaking point. When you don't have food, water, supplies, medicine, etc and your (surviving) family needs something, you are going to do whatever it takes to get it for them unless 1) you're a pussy 2) you're an asshole 3) you're trying too hard to do what's right.
