Dirty turd or dimond in the rough? (HX35W)
« on: March 12, 2010, 01:40:09 AM »

Should I buy this thing? It's around 2 bones shipped.

Supposedly this turbo has very little shaftplay, spins freely, other pics show just soot not oil. Looks like it sat outside compressor-up for a year. I'd probably just douche it out and only need it for a few hundred miles. There is another one for a bit cheaper, but it's the 8-blade version - and it's much cleaner. I'd almost want that for a cunt-hair better spool.

Basicly I want to know how much abuse/neglect a Hoeslut can take before it's really just scrap.

They can take a lot. That one is probably off a marine engine. That said buy the 8 blade since it's better and cheaper.

I disagree, about the 8 blade being better. However if it is cleaner and cheaper, then buy it, it is not a significant difference.

I'm not too concerned about overall flow, 50+ lb/min is much more than I'll need. However the 8-blade's larger exducer (83mm vs 76mm) would help in spoolup, as would just the extra blade itself.

I'm also planning on grinding the divider down and putting a flapper in there, to make it an integrated quick spool valve. 6cm for spoolup, 12cm for topend. Depending on how that goes, I may drop $125 or $175 for a 18cm or 16cm housing. It would spool like an hy35 but would pull like crazy to redline.

That one looks pretty haggered. Mine was about the same when I bought it. (if i find the thread or pics ill post them)
I thought it will be good, not too much shat play and cleaned up pretty easy..... but a buddy said he'll take it to work and check it out. Long story short it needed a full rebuild.

That thing should clean up just fine.  I saw a guy with one much dirtier that cleaned up perfectly. I wish I could find it, it was just recently too.
