Fred Cooke of FreeEMS is at a critical point in hardware development, and without funding I fear his work is going to come to a short term standstill. We all know how that goes with any project. You're balls deep in it, getting stuff done and really passionate about it, and then you run into a financial or lack of tools brick wall that gets you sidetracked.
It's not like Fred ever expected to make a lick off of all this, he's doing it for the world. If you can kick him a buck or two it'd be appreciated, and he promises not to spend more than 60% of any monies donated on prostitutes and 40z of malt liquor. Plus, you can write it off on your taxes.

Thanks!
-
ttt broke right now
-
I'll see what I can do, it wouldn't be a whole lot but I can spare a bit. ;D
-
I think I can spare $10 or so. It's worth it for someone so passionate about what they do. Maybe one day I can use it on my truck.
-
tell me moar about freeems
-
If Fred can make it run common rail diesel, I can find some funding... :P
-
i can give 15-20$ or so for helps. idk how do i can send you the payment, paypal is ready though.
-
Maybe an address I'm sure most people feel comfortable throwing a couple bucks in an envelope.

I'm an idiot and assumed he was located in the states.
-
I'd get a perverse pleasure out of you internationally mailing him greenbacks. :P
-
I would really like to hear his initial comment as opening the envelope in his NZ accent. Just thinking about it makes me laugh

Could you please remove my email from your post or change the @ and . symbols to (at) and (dot) instead :-)
Thanks again!
BTW, FreeEMS ran with xgate last night, it just flashed an LED, but the capability to do big things now exists.
XGATE FreeEMS Built In Auckland! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIiTAs75yYQ#normal)
Yes, I'm living in my car... no, it's not a station wagon...
-
Money sent Fred. Gotta keep the dream alive!
-
Thanks man, but it's me you're keeping alive at the moment! :-)
However, as long as I'm alive I'll keep working on this!
Fred.

Fred.
What kind of dollars are we talking about her. ;D
-
A couple of litres of milk, a loaf of bread, half a box of cereal, half a small jar of peanut butter, and about 5 gallons of low octane per week, no dinners. I have very few dollars remaining and no job. I'm living in my car and swimming in a (rather cold) local lake to keep clean. I use shopping mall and beach toilets and water supplies. I pinch wifi from wherever I can. Today I've been studying up on WEP cracking to extend the number of hot spots I can hit. Things are a bit bleak, however once I get work I'll be fine. It's just a matter of how long that takes, how much dev I do in the mean time, and how long the money lasts.
-
At least the exchange rates good for recieving us dolla's lol. keep up the good work.
-
good luck on the project dude, i hope can see very soon FreeEMS installed in any honda turbo with a lot of options for tuning! 8)
-

Fred.
I didn't realize that was the issue. Either way it was money well spent.
-
I would like to send us dollars via usps.
-
where the hell is the paypal option?
-
never mind, sent over an andrew jackson. fred- fuck yeah!
-
Thank you Jesus, most appreciated. Ditto everyone else!
Fred.
-
I logged on to berate the 50% of people who said they'd kick money yet hadn't, only to see someone has definitively taken care of the situation. Whomever you are, well played, and you are welcome on my couch anytime you are in Asheville.
Also, Fred? I expect a working fucking beta within two months or I fly to Kiwiland and kick you in the pee pee. That is all.
-
Holy shit fred, you have more money than I do!!!
-
A big thanks to everyone here for their help. You guys took my worries away. Then along came that big surprise, and made me laugh, and cry. I know who it was, and they're pretty cool. I'll be phoning him tomorrow to say thank you more personally.
As for beta in 2 months, you can install one on a volvo right now! I don't know how long the missing sched code will take to create, or the comms to update, or the xgate bit bang code to write, etc, but we're working on it as much as we can.
Fred.
-
Fred I get payed in a few, Ill paypal you what I can!
-
Hey people! Just a thank you to those who helped when I was in dire need! When I left NZ I had just a few dollars left in my account post trailer hire and other costs of getting out of the country. I'm now living in Barcelona Spain (yes, you can call me a euro-fag if you like :-p) with my wife (Spanish), and still working hard on this!
And a quick update: You'll all be pleased to know that the first Honda ran on FreeEMS just a few days ago! It was the tenth engine to run FreeEMS and you can read the somewhat ROFL story here:
http://forum.diyefi.org/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=1560 (http://forum.diyefi.org/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=1560)
Various levels of detail on the other 9 are available here:
http://forum.diyefi.org/viewforum.php?f=55 (http://forum.diyefi.org/viewforum.php?f=55)
Engines 8 and 9 were on the second and third of January, respectively. A great start to the new year :-)
Cars from 1968 - 2002, 9 brands of vehicle, 4 countries, it's growing!!!
This year is going to be BIG for FreeEMS :-)
Fred.
PS: And yes, I'm still living from donations, however I'm not desperate and I know a lot of you guys are on low income too, so don't go without beer for me! :-)
-
Post a donation link and I'll kick you another $10 euro-fag.
I think I need to try this on my old Chevy truck soon.
-
There's no need right now, though every cent does help! If I get in trouble again, I'll put up my hand, I'm not shy :-)
Donate links are on most of the pages, eg: http://freeems.org (http://freeems.org)
Cheers!

General update about the state of the project and the story of my life for the last year or two:

People from this thread are referred to and JD is the internet-famous character mentioned!
Fred.
-
Damn dude! A lot of the programming talk was way over my head, but it sounds like you had a rough road to get where your at now.
-
Rough, but worthwhile! :-)
-
Wow fred I remember watching the vid of you doing coding in a parking lot late at night lighting up leds. Glad its looking up for you
-
I don't expect anything from anyone, just posting it here in case anyone has any ideas. Thought I'd be totally open about my situation and future plans.

Hey man, thanks for the offer! I'm well aware that a lot of people are equally as broke as me, so if that's you, hang onto it! If you're doing OK, feel free to use the donate link on http://freeems.org (http://freeems.org) which, once clicked, gives my paypal address.
I appreciate the support, but I'm conscious that I'm not in the starve situation that I was in when JD started this thread. It's now a case of keeping the wife happy and avoiding work so as to put more time into the project in various ways.
Fred.

Fred-nog; I don't do donations, but I gladly support innovation and am an angel investor in a couple small time businesses - if you'd be interested in something more along those lines shoot me a private message. I love your work and think it follows a logical progression of where the scene is/was and ought to be.
-
I don't do investors, sorry, but thanks for the offer :-) Also, investors aren't much good when all of your work is for free and you're dying slowly while living in your car. Thanks again to those who helped when I really needed it! Most appreciated.
I have just launched an itty bitty business, kick started by, you guessed it, donations, here: http://brickems.com (http://brickems.com)
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbrickems.com%2Fbrickrpm%2Fthumbs%2FWithDime-P1270688.jpg&hash=f110310aa5f545c9a476046239c5b1ba6b3fe670)
I've just about sold out of the first tiny batch of BrickRPM boards (http://brickems.com/brickrpm) and will be placing an order for more supplies for another batch using the proceeds from the first lot any day now.
Expect more diy efi style stuff from that effort in future, however the core still is the firmware, and that's unpaid and lots and lots of work. Without the firmware being awesome the whole thing means absolutely nothing, and the firmware is free. Yesterday I did this much work:
29 files changed, 598 insertions(+), 343 deletions(-)
25 files changed, 35 insertions(+), 512 deletions(-)
And achieved these results:
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstuff.fredcooke.com%2FBensNewDefault24x19VETable.png&hash=6325f139dda2ba382412e6ce1ac29faae34fcc5b)

bottom is RPM, /2 for real
left is kPa, /100 for real
VE is /512 for real
Timing is (currently) /1024 for real
Tables are adjustable size, so you can choose skinny/long/tall/square/whatever within some limits.
Pretty soon there won't be default logging, each user will log what they need/want meaning less logged = higher rate, more logged = lower rate. Default is currently 80Hz.
Etc! I'm doing this full time, as I'm still not legally allowed to work in Spain, yet. Plus with 25% (you read right) unemployment, even if I was, it'd still be average :-/
Fred.
-
So will brickems offer an assembled version of freeems?
-
Eventually, yes. There are a few other projects with different hardware goals on the go by others, too. What's the application, exactly?
There is a road map guide here: http://forum.diyefi.org/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=1699 (http://forum.diyefi.org/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=1699)
The safe time to get involved as a normal user is once the third milestone has been achieved.
Currently working on the first one. It's a long slow road, but the quality is good, and the users happy, so far, mostly.
Fred.
-
I will have several applications once it is a stable purchasable unit. I honestly do not have the time or the desire to learn what I would need to learn to use it from this point, or from any point prior to being able to purchase it like a pre packaged mega squirt.
I would love if it eventually supported diesel common rail injectors, but that is kind of a pipe dream I am sure. I would be happy with just a nice ems for various turbo v8 projects, and snowmobile projects. I would rather have my purchase money go back into something where I feel I have some sort of relationship (other then money in exchange for product) with the creative leader of the product.
-
Yeah, in that case, you'd be best off waiting a while :-)
Just watching is fun too; that's all I get to do over here :-/

If any of you have any spare cash and are happy with the way the FreeEMS project has been going recently, please log in and have a read of this basically begging thread:
http://forum.diyefi.org/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=2220 (http://forum.diyefi.org/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=2220)
Basic summary, OK right now, will be short of cash by end of October and in need of some help to get my possessions out of Spain and back to NZ. Could do with some food money once back in NZ until I find a job too. Otherwise, all is going well :-)
Oh, and another helpful thing would be to fund flying your favourite moderator Mr JD himself to Seattle for a few days to help me hack on/tune up a Honda engine and do some VTEC yo work.
A picture that I've not published publicly elsewhere yet, just for you lot, because you're obscure:
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn2%2F977434_10151487781347007_1650498974_o.jpg&hash=3bfd7c026fec67567f52781c4a40de4ac3793acf)
Received three DVDs of media of that car today. Will start going through it all fairly soon once I have something more important done.
Drive-by-wire coming soon, too, by necessity for my future. http://www.facebook.com/FreeEMS/posts/10151595525989022 (http://www.facebook.com/FreeEMS/posts/10151595525989022)

I need to look into this again. Maybe it's in a stage where building and using it aren't above my head.

Well, just south of interstate 5 on 44th, past 200th, but before the next lights, on the right, is a workshop with a weird (Honda powered) car and a hairy kiwi in it. There should be a bunch of FreeEMSers in that workshop on the evening of the 21st of November, including tuning app author, me, PCB designer, and 3 more users, possibly 1 or 2 cars running the system, too. Could be a good night to meet up and hang out :-) Draw their attention to this post, if you like. I can give them the exact address via PM.
-
Someone shine the CRX cut out into the sky, I am sure the darkest man in the pacific north west, would want to be apart of that. O0
-
message LEED and let him know. Like said, he will probably show up.
-
JD should take a vacation and fly up there and hang with his favorite Spiker. :noel:
Like to fly up there myself, but short notice. :-\
-
What are the three nicknames I need to PM? bigdaddyvtec is obvious, the other two are called what? Should be good fun, a full house or near it :-)
Have the car running OK as of today. VERY rough UGLY tune by ear only (it's not a tune at all... really...) but it starts pretty quickly and revs out to what the hole flows (peak of 5k so far):
http://youtu.be/sdm3yVVEXw4 (http://youtu.be/sdm3yVVEXw4)
Tomorrow I'll be adding:
- A Spartan wideband from http://14point7.com (http://14point7.com)
- Wiring and driver and perhaps some code for drive-by-wire
- An appropriate output to the fan control relay(s) so it doesn't overheat while tuning in neutral in the garage
Will also be assisting the tuner app author make his app better! It needs some love...
Should be there from about noon on? Hard to say, picking two guys up from the airport and bringing them up.
Details about the "build party" event are here:

and/or here:

7pm is the official time, but there is a good chance I'll be there messing around a fair bit earlier for the unemployed or shift workers. PM and/or email me if you plan to show up earlier so I can confirm it's OK.
-
Dustin => turbohf
Spiker => bigdaddyvtec

Thanks, PM sent to all nicks, we'll see what happens, I guess.

AWESOME night! But absolutely NO RHMTers :-p They missed out. I love the sound of an engine on the limiter! <3
That R18A1 is surprisingly peppy at least in neutral! Vids up at some stage, unsure when.
Fred.

Back in NZ and completely broke. Today I had a tyre delaminate and upon measuring it, there is over half an inch of a bump in it for about quarter of a turn. You can imagine how this felt at 60+ MPH. The spare was already on the front as the front right had deflated and popped off the rim a week earlier. I can't justify buying tyres for the car (they're just shitty 175/70R13 junk) when I need to buy food with the small amount of cash that I have left while I look for a job. I remember last time when this thread was started, and a bunch of you collectively bailed me out with a bunch small donations added together. That was, and still is, hugely appreciated! If you're still so inclined, now's a very good time to do it again as I'm basically off the road until some tyre-buying-funds come through. Thanks in advance!
-
I can shoot you some loot Friday when I get paid.
Is freeems getting near the point that a guy like me with no real electronics knowledge, but very handy with a soldering iron could use it?
-
Fred is looking for a job?

^ pics of fucked tyres + sob story.
Fred is indeed looking for a job. Fred needs the capital a good job can provide to take over the world and run all of the big guys out of business ;-) Mean while, milk/bread/tyres are hard to come by. :-(
FreeEMS if you can swing a soldering iron but know nothing about the parts you're laying down, then you could build and install a FreeEMS setup. You could also pay someone else to do the soldering for you. The software side is still messy, but people trying to use it and bitching to the appropriate developer(s) will make that change.
Fred.
-
I have done tons of ecu chipping and built a sequential shift light using spoon fed directions and schematic. I don't have much understanding of what the parts do though. As for tuning, I need a decent GUI. I have scratched the surface of binary code, but could never make direct code changes to tune. I need fuel and ignition tables I can adjust.
-
Table tuning is available, no stress. Windows installers for various apps also available no stress. Initial config takes a bit of setting up, though. But I can help with that.
Other than the fucked tyres, I also run out of bandwidth in about a week. Great. lol.
-
Sounds good. I wish I could kick you some loot to help, but I'm in the same boat suddenly. Had a roommate flake on me and had to spend 90% of my paycheck on my mortgage. Now I have to figure out how to eat and put gas in my crv for 2 weeks on almost no money.
-
Sell plasma....
-
had a promising meeting with a potential roommate tonight. if that goes well, ill support the kiwi
-
If you're in dire straights yourself, look after number one first. The next month of fuel, tyres, inet has been covered, mostly by some regulars, however in about a month I'll be in the same boat again unless I've nailed a job of some sort. Fingers crossed on that.
-
Are jobs of all sorts hard to come by in Spain (or w/e you are now), or are you holding out for a $50 euro/hr job that you can work on FreeEMS coding all day? I know some otherwise decent people that refuse to work for less than double min wage & make their kids starve as a result. IMO doing dishes or cleaning toilets is still a job. Not implying anything, just curious.
-
In Spain, yes, so I took a job at what I consider minimum wage, which was about 1.5x what my wife was earning, and about 75% of what my first sw dev job paid 7 years ago. Less than that is hard to justify. I'd happily earn less, doing something of less value, but I'm not giving away my talent and skill "for free" to anyone. Anyone except you, that is :-p
-
Fred if you need a few $$ next month let us know.
-
i told you ago long time you can make good money if you go to tuning vag cars, etc. but if that's not good for you..why you stay in spain? just wondering, here it's kinda hard to find good job i think..
-
why you stay in spain? just wondering, here it's kinda hard to find good job i think..
Fred married a smoking hot Spanish girl.
And, it's hard to get a job anywhere when you are Fred Cooke.
-
Send me one of these so I can put it on a turbo liter bike please.
-
I bet he would trade one for money.
-
Fred if you need a few $$ next month let us know.
Nah mate, I'm all good as of now. Could change in future. Donations still welcome, but not needed for the moment. Appreciate the offer very much, though.
i told you ago long time you can make good money if you go to tuning vag cars, etc. but if that's not good for you..why you stay in spain? just wondering, here it's kinda hard to find good job i think..
Fuck Spain. I'm back in NZ. I'll cut my passport up soon. Fuck the world, this included. It's only "less shit" than other places.
Fred married a smoking hot Spanish girl.
Truth. Everyone has one regret...
And, it's hard to get a job anywhere when you are Fred Cooke.
LOL :-)
Send me one of these so I can put it on a turbo liter bike please.
Start a thread, on here if you want, about exactly what features you need as a MINIMUM (don't include shit that you don't NEED, and only WANT). Maybe we can work something out. Eventually, definitely.
I bet he would trade one for money.
Or an ugly wife with a heart! :-p I lie, she has a heart. But LOTS of baggage.
Fred.
-
I'll give you my ex-wife for ems for my truck. She has a heart and no baggage...... Except that I owe her $7500. Lol
-
I'll give you my ex-wife for ems for my truck. She has a heart and no baggage...... Except that I owe her $7500. Lol
If she has at least another $7500 I could get off of her, I could maybe help you out with that deal...
-
She has no money, but I appreciate the offer.
-
If she has no money then there is no offer.
-
She likes to rack up credit cards. She pays the bills, but would have nothing without them
-
Has everyone else gotten their refund from Fred yet?
