As iv had a few people ask me to put my build up I decided to do another write up as I'm banned from HMT and cant copy it.
My ride is a 2000 Mitsubishi L300 van with a 4G64 2.4L turbo 5 speed manual. It has Mitsubishi legnum VR4 16inch rims, lowered 2 inchs rear and 1.5 inchs front. I got hold of an LSD center from a L200 ute for $100 which is fucken cheap, before I had the LSD the van would just fry 1 tyre and not go any wear. Now it bags up both but hooks up quite well. I wanted to build a sleeper so the out side of the van looks quite standard and isn't too loud at idle, it also has a tow bar, a "I love lawn bowls" sticker on the back and retains the standard 1.5 inch exhaust out the back but isn't hooked up.
It was built on a budget out of alot of free parts and dodgy RHMT welding and fabrication.
-Walbro intank pump
-50/50 mix Water methylated spirits injection with a 5L plastic fuel can converted.
-cheap 3inch pod filter with a whitey bend intake.
-IHI VF 23 wrx sti turbo (way too small)
-DIY log manifold
-3inch dump into home made 3inch muffler box that dumps a foot before the diff under the car.
-De capped WRX injectors 800+cc's
-Bored out standard throttle body from 55mm to 60mm using a standard wrx throttle blade with ported manifold.
-Reground turbo cam
-Haltech E6K ECU street tuned by me with a wideband and chassis ears.
-2 step limiter that I see 10psi with cut set at 3800rpm (shoots flames)
-Diy shift light by using 4 LED's in the dash.
This car was a great learning experience and is fucken fun to drive :noel:. I have had quite a few races to about 130kph against a few modded evos, skylines and STIs and have beaten all of them by at least 1/2 a van length :noel: . I tried to play with a 2jz turbo supra last night but he just laughed and shook his head lol, I was a bit disappointed. I see 12psi of boost by 2400rpm and it pulls hard to 7000rpm.

I cannot think of a better way to put it. OP is my vote for "Noob" of the year for sure.
**** Note: Noob in quotations as he is new here, but obviously has the rhmt fundamentals under control.

I joined up to HMT in early 05 and came over here a week after it turned to shit, I have picked up alot of info from this site and know when to keep my mouth shut, I try to put as much solid info back into the site as I can.
-
Nice.
-
i love the ingenuity.
Solid work sir, solid

van is sick! quality work

Well I street tuned my van last night . I wound the boost up to 16psi and the improvement was huge, Unfortunately after a few launches off the 2 step in 2nd gear the clutch got hot and was slipping slightly. When I first turboed it the standard clutch lasted about 3 streets lol, I then when to an RX7 pressure plate and an organic disk which is what is slipping now. My clutch guy at the time couldn't find anything else that would fit in the bell housing so I'm a bit fucked off that i need to upgrade again. Its booked in for a power run on the dyno on Friday so it should be interesting if the clutch holds up, and on Saturday is drag racing which should be interesting.
-
Well the clutch has been fine after it cooled down. I had the car on the dyno but was getting a miss fire above 4800rpm, I thort it was from the rich mixtures but I later found out I had my plugs gaped at .9mm ::). The car managed to put out 240rwhp @ 4600rpm with 13psi of boost before it miss fired, so I imagine it should have alot more in it when it goes to 7000rpm and I turn the boost back to 18psi. We had to put a few people in the back as it was wheel spinning on the rollers lol.
I deiced to go out for a tune after I put new plugs in, It was going well until a 4th gear rev limiter snapped my p/s belt and took out a coil lead. It cut the end completely off so i put it in the coil hole and tapped it up and drove home with out any problems :noel:.I put on a new belt and crimped on a new end on the lead because all the shops were shut and racing was in the morning, I had to wind the boost back down with the crappy lead end to stop misfiring.
Went racing and could only manage a 14.8@98mph with a 2.6 60ft and problems selecting gears >:(. I managed one good 60ft of 2.11 but couldn't get 3rd gear and run 15.1@84mph which mean I should get a low 14 when I can shift the thing. I am also going to put another Alcohol nozzle pre turbo to try bring my 140Deg F Inlet temps down.

You are New Zealand but why is the U.S. flag at that dragstrip?
-

You raise a good point lol. It was mainly a muscle car meet and since we have never built cars here all our muscle cars are from the US?? But I never see a Japanese flag for the import days haha
-
looks like it launches pretty good.
its like the van from old school NZ style

Its fucken hard to get off the line, I launch it in 2nd gear. 1st gear is usually over to quick. I didnt have a p/s belt on either which didnt help (it broke after the first run), on one run I was side ways for the whole 60fter.

sweet shit. i love vans :?:
-
How the fuck did I miss this post. Solid build man. We need this post sticked for it's well played delivery.
-
i like your burnout, not sure i've seen a van burnout like that before, very nice.
-
This build makes me smile everytime I see it.
-
Haha she's still going strong as a daily driver, it has huge traction problems till 4th gear unless carefully driven. I will have to put a build thread up for my other play toy. 1994 Mitsubish GSR (same as an EVO 2 but with a turbo 1.8L). heres a vid of me out launching a R32 GTR that the owner couldnt drive for shit. Its also been built on a RHMT budget/style, hockey puck mounts ftw. O0

This is a top notch and real home made turbo build and thread. Props.
-
Josh, which 1.8L did the GSR's get? 4g67 or the 4g93???
-
4G93T. It will soon be replaced with a 4G64 2.4L and a HX40 :noel:. Best bit is the drive train is bullet proof standard.

Yeah I saw your post on ZeroG, do the 4g6X motors bolt up to the 4G9X transmissions? Are the bolt patterns the same? Here in the states, the Volvo S40 comes with the 4g93, wondering if that might be a possible source of parts.
-
One sick fuckin van! :noel:
-
Would make a good ChiMo van.
Room for lots of kids and the speed to get away :noel:
-
The A-Team got nothing on that van.
-

Fuck that, you know the A-Team's van was only setup for drifting. Besides, they had fucking automatics in the trunk. O0

The AWD 4G93 is the same case as the AWD 4g63 evo box, different ratios and the evo got double sincro's. The AWD and FWD boxs have the same bolt pattern, the RWD usually have a wider pattern and dont bolt up.

Sweet van! :-) I replied to your post on the ex-forum a few days ago ... 4 years late. And now this! Still around?
PS, love stock exhaust at rear not hooked up :-)

Old ass thread, still a sweet Van...
You should ship me an RB30 short block ;DDD seriously

Cheers mate. A guy from palmy north brought it and the first thing he did was put a cannon muffler on and a huge intercooler out the front with 19inch mags(pic below). Looked fucken shit. I decided 6 months ago that this was the most fun vehicle Iv owned for a daily driver and had to do another one now im living back in Australia. Ill do a build thread when I get it going, its got a series 8 RX7 gearbox and a 2L evo 3 motor with a compound turbo set up with a tdo5 fed by an HX40 pro. Should do 550whp easily.

I literally shouted out loud "OH NO!!!" when I read this! And my wife said "What???" because it sounded fucking serious. Which it is. :-(
New one looks MEAN! Which bit of ozzy? I'm living in Barcelona; modified cars and skid marks outside my undies are few and far between here! :-(
What's the configuration of the compound setup exactly?
Fred.
-
rb's are upto fuck all... what does that mean...
people pay 1000 dollars for rb30's here... i know what you get them for surely shipping isnt 800 bucks
-
You pay 1k for rb30's? I'm in the wrong business...
What does an rb26 go for?
-
rb30's aren't easy to find here, some people get them cheaper but alot of people will pay 1k for a motor in good shape.. rb26's probably would go for an easy 2000 if it was in good shape and complete
-
I'm assuming that 2k is for an R32 block. That's not too bad.
I still can't get over 1k for an rb30...
-
"rb26's probably would go for an easy 2000 if it was in good shape and complete" - where?
-
Yeah sometimes people get em for 700 or so but 1k isnt uncommon.. from what ive read.. im in the middle of trying to get one now so i can build it sometime down the road... the 25/26 i got now will have to due
-
20,25,30 are all cheap as chips, at least in NZ. 26 is not cheap, anywhere, that I'm aware of. It's right up there with 20B and the toyota V12.
-
well an r32 rb26 swap with ecu wiring and AWD manual trans goes for 2700 on ebay... take away the trans and ebay im sure you could find one for 2k.. not that expensive really
-
2k is pretty common for a good running long block 26 up here in canuckistan. If you want to talk about r34 nur spec blocks, that's a different story...
-
Furry muff.

Sorry for the late reply iv been away for work. Im living on the sunshine coast in Queensland, I did a heavy diesel fitter upskill from light vehicle mechanic and Im working at an open pit coal mine up in the Bowen basin. The compound set up is the following-- (Exhaust side) forged evo 3 engine, with twinscroll manifold to evo 7 twinscroll 16g tdo5hr using a smaller evo 4 rear housing, it has a 60mm wastegate that fully opens and bypasses the tdo5. The down pipe from the tdo5 feeds into a billet 7 blade HX40 and the waste gate from the tdo5 also feeds into the HX40. There is also a 40mm waste gate pre hx40 that dumps to atmosphere.
(compressor side)---- hx40 feeds into the tdo5's inlet and then intercooler and plenum.
The Hx40 will only need to run 10-15psi and the total system pressure will be between 30-40psi and is running E85 and staged injection (8 injectors). This is still a rhmt style build with not much $$$$ spent.
-
I love your exhaust side plan, it's exactly like the Borg Warner R2S setup. The intake side plan isn't as nice, though. Did you consider bypassing the 16g with an air valve too like the R2S setup? Should be mean all the same. How are you planning to cool the 60mm gate?
-

The drag strip would be the longest time it will be on boost and the tdo5 turbine still flows alot when the gates open so im hoping that cooling wont be too much of a problem, it also hangs down in an area that should see good airflow.
The Tdo5 compressor shouldn't be a restriction, as far as it knows its 5000 leagues below sea level. If it was bypassed it wouldn't be a true compound setup, I based alot of mine off the boost logic 2jz supra that makes 20psi at 2800 rpms and making around 800 RWHP. Its going to be really interesting, if it doesn't work as well as I hope I can always change the setup around.

If it was bypassed it wouldn't be a true compound setup
Right, it would be a clever sequential twin turbo setup that actually works :-)

did a 4th gear pull low rpm and boost.

If you want to talk about r34 nur spec blocks, that's a different story...
What is a nur spec block? We've an R34 RB26 sitting here that the cams and crank have been stolen out of, otherwise complete longblock. That worth anything two weeks before racewars?
-
Strike.

The compound setup I recall where the guy had a valve bypassing the small turbo's compressor had lots of issues. It either wouldn't open or close reliably, can't recall which. Compound-sequential is all about pressure ratios. A 35lb/min turbo with 15psi at it's inlet will pass over 60lb/min before becoming a restriction.
