Gpo just kicked my ass
« on: April 28, 2010, 02:44:26 AM »

Ok I'm having small problem. I'm trying to use gpo to activate my homemade water/meth kit basicly above 3500 rpm & 10psi it was suppose to activate I'm using pin a20 as the ground to start the system. All was good for the first 10 seconds meth sprayed the motors didn't sound to be at peek power then I turn key off it's still spraying and ecu starts smoking like a sob.

So basicly I'm thinking the motors are sending to much to the ecu the circut is  getting overwhelmed.

So now my next idea is to wire in a full throttle switch to activate ground for the meth but I also need this to activate my secondary maps.

How I think of it is to use another ground circut as  an input to activate my secondary maps when grounded, but my question on tryin to do this, Is this when I would use the invert feature on one of the output circuts?

So basicly I'm thinking the motors are sending to much to the ecu the circut is  getting overwhelmed.

Most of the ECU's transistors are rated for 1 amp or a little less, an electric pump is a couple times that.  I'm surprised it worked for any period of time, and defaulted to closed circuit as opposed to just toasting the transistor in a half second.

Use a solid state relay that can be switched by 12v logic (or wire one that can be switched by 5v logic inside the ECU).  $8-9 should get you one to the door.

any input on hooking one of these up? have the gpo ingage relay which is grounded already when circut switches ground enabled?

just trigger the transistor the same way you did the relay before. then you have 2 options, run the pump directly off the transistor- or trigger a relay by the transistor to power the pump.

running strait off the transistor is probably the fastest, but under high loads they heat up so you have to have them on a heat sink. triggering a relay might add a quarter second to the time it takes to turn on the pump if your using some shitty chinaman relay.

I think all cop cars need to have turbo. nbspnbsp Then they would understand the necessity of putting your foot down and how uncontrollable the urge is to fucking rail on that shit.

Solid state relays do not take a quarter of a second to latch.

lilpooh21186, just like a normal relay.  They are labeled and everything.  Look closely at the pics I posted... they are DC switched AC devices, but you can get DC/DC units.

They'll look like this:

I've never tried an ac-dc solid-state taht worked with DC on the output. They must be rated dc-dc to work.

The cheap way to do this is with a big fat 30amp relay, they kick on in 1/10th a second. Name-brand will some with real specs. Otherwise find out the motor's rating and get some uber-fast relay from mouser or digikey. ATM I'm using a relay to control 2 relays off a GPO. The cutout opens in 1/3 a second, so the relays actually account for half the delay time.
