Well, heres some info on my pos crx,
its a 1986 dx crx, was red when my buddy got it, he swaped a d16a1 motor in it and ran nitrous for a while, he rebuilt the motor and not long after that i got the car from him for cheap.
i drove it around as a daily driver with just arp goodies and zc head crap with a 75 shot, ran a best of 13.2 @ 106 in Sacramento when my friend had it.
I got bored of the car, and the transmission was super loud from 5th gear bearings being fucked. my friend had previously put a obx lsd in the transmission so no need for that.
My goal is to have around 300-320whp on pump gas and 400+ on race gas, we will see how my stock cams do, i plan on running delta 272s and supertech springs/retainers later on...
So we pulled the swap out to fix the trans, and build the motor for boost, heres the ricer list
Engine block d16a1/dohc zc
Std vitara pistons
fjt i beam rods
arp head studs
clevite bearings std
all new rings/seals/gaskets
new w pump
All machine work done by me at work free
polished crank, decked block, hot tanked, honed, notched block,
welded -10an fitting to back of breather
parkinized cams, polished journals,
complete valve job, new stem seals, decked head.
Running a pretty stock head for now other than having a chris m 74mm tb and spacer
with my ported 89 intake manifold

So far after taring everything down ive replaced
Front ball joints,
wheel barings
inner/outer tie rods
put 3" arp wheel studs in the front
replaced all bushings with energy suspention ones
new front rotors/pads
new drums/shoes
new master cly
13" steelies with stock hubcaps
painted engine bay black
and i just built the block today, everything specked in great and turned out good.
Didn't get the head done at work, didnt have time to cut the seats on friday, so i plan on doing it next week and puting the head together. then puting it on next week.
Hopefully my transmission will be done soon, and my clutch will be here early next month so the motor can go back in.
Then i can start progress on finishing up the turbo setup.
Should be fun.

IT will be tuned by dave lee, and my goal is to have it on the road in june... i welded my valve cover -10 bungs on also, More updates soon to come...

Looks like it will be a great project. The only thing I would change would be the -10 where the breather box was. I think that you will be blowing some oil out of that hole and filling your can since the origanal black box was baffled. Other than that this build is on point, and total sex! Jew :mexi: O0 :noel:

ya its coming alog, thanks nogs, ill have pics of geting the head on next week, the valve cover and turbo crap. hope to have it in soon. and more pics of the car. i did bafle the fitting on the back, and im also running a fitting to my oil pan, so anything that does make it in will drain back. Cant wait to get the thing on the road, the rally subaru is geting old.

ya its kind of weird, made it so any oil draining couldnt make it in there. its weird though, because people keep saying how much bigger of a combustion chamber cc my d16a1 head is but we put my head next to an a6 and there was really no difference. i just think no one wanted to take the time to check it because no one cares about these motors. but i guess theres maybe something im not seeing :mexi:
just ordered my clutch, now waiting on my transmission from gman, and resurfacing my flywheel this week at work. want to have the motor in early next month :noel:

ya they are the long rods, i have a 74mm tb on my 89 intake manifold, so im good on that. if im going to upgrade i plan on making a sheet metal one with velocity stacks.

well, got the head all done today at work, surfaced it, valve job, cleaned it. new stem seals... and threw it on the head with arp head studs and cometic head gasket today. got it timed, bolted the intake manifold on. gotta put the 74mm tb on tomorrow, put the inner timing covers i forgot before i timed it on, and get all the nick nack shit on the motor. still waiting for my transmission to be finished, and my clutch should be here any day :mexi:

it was free, and its just for brake in, im going to be running honda after i change the oil and all the assembly lube and crap is gone. it will do the job til then. ya i want to button everything up tomorrow, and have to take my flywheel to work to surface it. cant wait, its coming along :noel:

im running a borg warner s256 ett turbo, got it for a good price, and its tits, but my buddy has a garret t3/t4 60trim w/.63 ar exhaust that needs seals, i was thinking of picking it up for cheap and rebuilding it to run it. not sure yet, both will make the power i need. I guess we will see what happens next month, going to be building some crazy custom manifold for it.
and for what the car is, well its my racecar, but im going to drive it alot this spring/summer because its alot better than driving my pos Subaru rally car around. but as soon as i get something better to drive, i plan on trying to make more than 400whp with it. for next season. id be happy to hit around 400whp on race gas this season, we will see, if i don't with my stock head, then i will end up getting the deltas and supertech springs/retainers and see how much that helps.

if i pulled about 1000 dollars out of my ass, and didnt have bills for the next paycheck i could make it to the dyno day, but no im most likly not going to make it boosted. im going to ride down with my buddy eric, we are building our vitara setups in the same shop, but he started a while ago, so its almost done. 90 hatch z6 with he351 vitara setup, pretty dam nice setup, all we have to do is some misk wiring and button it up and it will be good to go for the dyno day, other than dave doing a street tune.
We should make a august dyno day too damit :yes:
going to button everything up on the motor this weekend, and surface my flywheel next week. then get my clutch on when it shows up, and my friend thats rebuilding my trans is taking forever so hopfully it will get done soon....

in other news, i had a pos eagle talon tsi i got from an auction and some parts from an old dsm that i parted out, well i traded it not running and got it for only 200, for a 86 civic hatch si with a 89 dohc d16a1 that ran and drove, just had to ungetto some of the wireing tonight, and fix a few small things. once i get the old exhaust and header from my crx on it, and put my old 6 puck in it, while buttoning it up to make it a good dd i will start driving it. now i have 2 oldschool oczc rides, and its pretty clean.
got the motor 100% done this weekend everythings bolted up, the guy thats building my trans pretty much said its not top priority and that he has no idea when he can get to it, so i think me and my friend eric are just going to fix the 5th gear shit ourselfs, the transmissions are fairly easy to work on and i have an extra that came with the hatch i just got :noel:

ya im just not a big fan of how low the turbo sits with a miniram, theres hardly room for a oil drain. anyone have pics of there oil drain setup on a d with a miniram?

You can clock your center section up to 30 degrees to point the drain at the oil pan. I don't have any pics for ya.
Also if you've taken apart your turbo you can clock the oil seals with the gaps pointing upward...

ya but now that my crx wont be driven all the time, and its my racecar, i can do some crazy setup, id like to make a setup i want, and i want to make a forward facing setup. ya i was planing on facing the turbo twards the pan a little if i make a miniram.

well with the way my fmic fits, im going to just run the miniram i made for now with my garret turbo. moved the car to my new shop, as soon as my trans is done i can put the swap in and start mocking everything up. cant wait to get it going, just need some misc turbo crap and it should hit the road by june. ill post up pics as soon as it goes in and i get the fmic and shit all mounted :noel:

fuck polishing anything. the intercooler pipeing will be easy, 3 45deg bends to the backdoor on the cold side, and the hot side the compressor will point down at like a 45 and i am welding a pipe to the inside of the endtank pointed up twards it. then welding the dsm bov to the hole where the pipe used to come out on the side. my downpipes done, and gona mount my rad, put my pte 880s in, and try to do the wiring. as soon as my lsd couplers/clamps show up i can finish my charge pipes, and ill do my oil drain. have all next week off so expect some updates. :-*
oh and i had everything mounted, my ebay half core fits well with my custom bracket, and the fmic will have about 1-2" of space from the rad. and i dont have to cut out of my bumper at all. everythings going to be tight, but thats how i like it

i already answered that, the rad is going to sit under the front plastic cover, its already mounted. fmic is a 4" thick unit i got from dustin. backdoor is gona make it super easy. ill post some pics for ya later this week. i have everything done just not welded. and not put on.

got the turbo setup done, just have to finish the catchcan lines, coolant hoses and vac bs, then wire it. and dont worry my rad sits back farther when its actualy bolted on, with the shroud and everything. tight fit, and see if you guys can spot my bov :noel:

anytime works for me... ya ripper vids for sure, id like to get a bigger turbo and do the headwork/cams and make a sheetmetal intake mani for next season, but this will be fine for now. i mean for a project, i have another 86 crx thats stock, and a 91 hf that both need love, id like to do a long high hp build someday...

alright. thats cool. were gona go shooting this weekend up at northfork and my friend was wanting some rounds for eather his ak or ar.
going out to finish wireing right now, get vac lines and coolant lines, done, and start buttoning shit up on it, put oil pan on, ajust valves, all that good stuff. im hoping for a start up next weekend or so. :o

got a ton done this weekend, and it should be going by sunday, gave my ecu to the black man, and hoping to have a good update this weekend. if everything works out me and my buddy eric should be getting our cars dynotuned around early late july/early august. pretty stoked. and ill have finished pics up this weekend.

IT RUNS!!! finaly got it started, had some dizzy wireing wrong, then the pr4 ecu had a problem, so i fixed the wiring and put a stock p06 in it and it fired right up, ran good other than idleing at 1500. gona try to button everything up tomorow and next week/weekend so i can get it broke in on the road and get tuned. few bugs to figure out but pretty much there. :noel:

crx made its maiden voyage friday night to my buddys shop with a lift to do the exhaust and button up a few things. car has a few issues with the map sencor being wired wrong and the vss is invisable because it never had one. so gona try to get that stuff done today, the 3" with a magnaflow and res sound good. otherwise motor and everything are running good and already did my first oil change. ill take some pics today. :noel:

ill post some pics up soon. gotta finish it up, and i figured out why its in failsafe so gona fix it tonight. then do catchcan plumbing, wireing cleanup and run my vac lines to the vac manifold. and do some minor other things. its throwing a map and crank angle code, got it figured out though map wires are diff than obd1 and 2 dizzy pickup wires are switched

after you first oil change just go out and do a duurty 3rd and let it decel, should be just fine :yes:

thanks for the comments nogs. im gona go figure out the wiring, and the rings seam pretty seated, car dosent smoke at all anymore, after 30 miles, yet ive only been able to rev to 3500 lol. ill take some more pics, the locking hood pins make me want to punch babys, but they will have to do
im loving how it drives with the front end fully rebuilt. and the exhaust sounds nice.
ill see if i can get pics soon, most likly tuning it next month, because im a broke fuck. I cant wait to respray it with the john deere flat black. it hasent been sprayed in over 3 years, with pretty much primer it dosent look to bad.
i need to get to the track damit :-\
oh and these are the rods i got from you apex. i already did a oilchange after about 10 miles, and a couple head cycles. had some fuel in the oil and didnt want to fuck it up. so my next oil change will be with RP. bahh i want to go fast not run on stock injectors/ecu to brake it in lol

OK!!! got the wireing figured out, the blue/green wire from my dizzy was suposed to go to b15 on my ecu, but it was going to d19 whitch is map voltage, and the harness wire to that was cut, so i hooked d19 back up like it was suposed to be and hooked my dizzy wire to b15 and now the map and crank pos codes are gone and its out of failsafe. no more codes.
im super happy that i was able to track down the problem.
and i went out and did like 25 hi vac decel runs 3rd gear 5500 down to 3k and it went from pulling 18vac to 23vac at idle now. so im pretty sure the rings are close to being seated. motor runs perfect
now to finish all the little shit and get ready to be tuned at the end of the month :noel:

Dope, now do some rippers! Just put a check valve in line with your waste gate so its always open and do that full throttle from 2k to 5500, and let it decel back down to 2k and repete over and over again.

On stock cams I was pulling about 19in, but with the deltas I'm pulling 14-15 at idle.

i think my rings are good to go, ya it was 22-23vac last night. im really happy with how the motor runs. and i did rebuild the head myself at work, expecting it to work well. guess the 3 angle valve job helped :yes:.
steve the wastgate isnt hooked up right now, because i dont have any fittings for my vac log yet, so ill do that and my catchcan tomorow

haha thanks, works great, awsome response. its crazy how my low comp d feels just like it did before with high comp. really responsive. going to get it tuned the first week of august i hope. just a street tune for now. i cant wait to lay into it. but im taking it easy and doing everything right. have about 120 miles on it now. still around 21-23 vac at idle. got my fan working off a stock thrermo switch in the lower hose now as well.
fml now i have to wire in a vss cluster, anyone have a 85-87 crx hf gauge cluster? if not im going to have to wire in a ef cluster :-\

Uh, I've had that page auto-opening in Firefox for two months now, that and the D16Z6 to 1G Integra tranny writeup. Anyway, looks like the pics are down - but don't worry. Just read through the text and look at your existing cluster vs a VSS cluster from an 88-91. It's pretty apparent what to do when you compare the two.

Im really happy to see parts to good use. Usually parts get bought from person to person and just sit around collecting dust in between.
Im really liking this build. I will see this sometime this year. My sister is moving to Seattle so that means that the WA nogs will be seeing me often.
