Title: Das Build Thread. the all motor d15 "sleeze" :Update itbs done pics of wife:
Post by: DasPoop on October 19, 2011, 11:13:46 PM
I have been collecting parts for a all motor d15 using vx rods and p29 pistons.

Parts I have colledcted
cbr itbs
delta 280 cam
vx rods(arp bolts)
std bore p29s
gaskets
4-1 header
king bearings
oe timing belt
etc.

I am going to see what type of power I can get out a single cam with good induction and exhaust and some head work.
Coupled with 12:1 compression should be a fun motor to rip around.

on to some pics.

Interesting to note the po7 rods look a lot more like d16 rods vs d15 rods. The beams are thicker as well as the big end esp around the oil jet.

Thanks to Russ for the rod bolts and itbs and flipnog for the crack head price of the rods.

Tossed the bottom end together yesterday going to finish it tonight.

Worked on the head all today. This thing was beat. No pics of the drill vac line lapping goodness. I cleaned up all the ports, was running out of time so the exhaust got less work than the intake but everything has been smoothed and blended the bowls have been worked into the seats. I left the port divider pretty much stock and I am not sure what to do with the injector pockets as the intake manifold I am using does not have provisions for injectors. Was thinking about filling them in with devcon and blending them into the rest of the port. Suggestions? But onto the pics.

Small Update.
Took an old dpfi manifold and after a little cutting and lots of grinding coupled with some cbr parts and came up with this this. Enjoy

Finished up the itbs this week. Got some composite tubing from a machine shop in town I run there dyno at from time to time for dyno days tuning etc. Its a little over 1.5" in dia. lightweight and strong. this was a 2ft sample stick he got that he said he wasnt going to use. anyways cut up some lengths and grabbed some epoxy and went to town. When I was done I have runners that are all 5.25" from the flange and they are all within 1/16th of an inch in length. I am going to brace them to keep them from having a change to crack. The throttle bodies came with no fueling so I needed to devise one. I took them to the junk yard and started to look at all different kinds of small engine fuel rails and in the process grabbed some densos that were promptly decapped. I came up with some hyundai 12v 1.5l(i think) rail. Its return style and aluminum and will fit just about any injector I want. I still need to make the final mounting brackets but my injectors fit very tightly in place so it wont need to be anything crazy strong.
Enough talk and onto pics

very nice rods resized after the bolts?

where in the fuck did you find a D 4-1 or you building it?

They are factory Vx d15z1 rods d15 big end and 137mm. I would have to say a vx bottom end with a non vtec head would net vitara compression and bigger rods it might make 220 wheel boosted.

and DC sports made a 4-1 d series header. I got one from hiprofile although I have yet to pay for it.  :noel:

How many head gaskets you plan on using?   Jew Jew Jew

.080" would be a good idea as well as shorter R5671A plugs.  O0 O0

I read the guy on d series who did the same thing and found out about the plugs. I am really debating on the hgs I have 2 composite gaskets currently but that will kill WAYY to much compression. They are .048 thick. I am thinking about messing around with the idea to cut apart a stock mls gasket and see how many layers i need to make it "safe" to clear I am trying to get as much compression as possible while still not having the piston meet the top end. The head without valves will sit on the block with just one gasket and not hit at tdc but its got to be super close.

Might wanna round/bevel the edge on the piston top.

Hrm didnt think of that(bevel the pistons). Any specific measurements on the bevel? I saw that you used 2 y8 gaskets stacked. I hope all this goes together. If all else fails I will stack 2 composite gaskets and have ~11.3:1.

EDIT: I think I am just going to stack 1 composite on the bottom and a mls above it .085 thick and 11.7:1 which is still pump gas friendly. I am just hoping my cam clears at this point. I also have a 272 in my stock d15 that I suppose I can use. If I have enough room I might send off another cam to get a 282 grind

NOTE I never ran my motor, but a buddy did @ 13.7:1 until something major happened, never heard what it was though.

Cometic .080" HG is an idea, Two MLS would be better. You can get a 5 layer MLS which equals the composite thickness, OEM replacement from Honda. I mocked up using a .425 lift cam and there was no valve clearance issues.

Note that with the thicker HG's it will advance the cam timing slightly.

I guess on the bright side, when you disassemble it you won't need to do any ridge reaming.

Just make sure you account for rod stretch at higher rpm. Just make sure it gets it's lube. I've seen many more D16 rods snap from siezing onto the journal than rod bolts snap.

True story. Pm'd Rushi about d series oiling issues and he said that aside from enlarging the rod and main bearing orifices the d15 has a decent oiling system as far as pump flow. I would  also think having the restrictor to the head in place helps a bunch. I also check my oil everytime I drive.

I am just wondering what oil to run in it to begin with. the stock d15 with 20w50 would hold 70psi from 2500-7k+ But I was reading that too thick of oil gives you more pressure but at the risk of not flowing as much to bearings.

Stock tight bearing clearances = 5w30 or 10w30
Loss Stock clearances = 10w30 to 10w40
Loss after market bearings 10w30 to 20w50.

or for every 0.0015" (tightest bearing clearance) go up in 5wt. keep in mind where the tightest clearance is.

Like cam to saddle, rod bearings, or any where else the engine oil flows through.  :noel:

I was waiting for that. I bought some devcon to fill the injector pocket in. I took notes off the endyn website. I got a new mandrel to allow me to work further into the port and tweak the center divider. Do you have any tips. also how do you take payment for parts?

Blend the guide down into the port and work the shit out of the divider. Also you should not see any casting. If your porting a head you better take out some real material to make a difference powerwise. Unlike the b series heads d series heads especially the non vtec ones need the ports opened up tons to make them perform.

paypal or money order

I havent looked at d15b2 manifold in a long time but cant imagine the ports being to friendly powerwise

This is a set of itb's I did years ago. z6 manifold cut down alot and new fuel rail mount welded on since we went way down to almost the flange. Perfectly staright and the z6 manifold has the largest ports of all sohc oem manifolds.

Thanks for the porting tips.

The itbs i have are only 36mm in dia. I am most likely going to end up hogging the shit out of the manifold. I choose it because well I have 4 of them and I wanted to use the stock injector location on the itbs. The manifolds ports look to be the same size as the gasket but that doesn't mean shit. I am seriously toying with the notion to fill in the roof of the port with devcon and blend it all together but having that big of a step after the manifold might help a ton with reversion. I am not 100% about that theory so any insight from people would help tons.

Try to get the biggest itb's you can on there honestly. The set in the pics were a 42mm plate unit that tapered down to 40mm. I ported the itb's so that they were 42mm from plate to inlet. The velocity stacks I think were off the biggest cbr honda makes got them at a local bike shop on the cheap. They bolted up to and for 25 bucks did the job.

Your over thinking it the power in heads especially in honda heads is blending the guide into the port, honda heads you can get away with it. Look at anyone who does it for a living we all do it well I use to do it when I could actually get a head sent in to get ported.

At this point I might just sell of all my tooling for porting and throw in the towel.

I wouldn't toss in the towel quite yet. I have a feeling the market will pick up with the d series once they are the only motors still in the yard until the k and r motors start showing up in larger numbers. However your the king of used honda parts so my thoughts are null.

I will work the head more tomorrow night and report back with pics.

Im sure Ill keep all my tooling but I highly doubt the postive thinking. I use to port atleast 2 heads a month and 5+ manifolds

so far this year

1 head
2 manifolds

so yeah its basically a dead end street.

Chris, it is the economy.

2009 I only did a handful of transmissions, then my name got around a few SCCA folks.

I'm guessing I have 20+ rebuilds to do this winter once I get off my ass and back into the garage.

Even Colin Brotha (sp) stated "like butter" after his emergency rebuild/shifter fork swap at NASA Nats.

I know my stuff has only gotten cheaper and better and no sales. Why I just basically gave up on it and just part out cars and sell used parts now

Even Dan Phan who had 5 employees and was in a 4500 sq foot shop is now in a little 800 sq ft shop working alone these days. Much different world thats for sure.

Sorry poop for cluttering your thread.

Time to move out of imports. There are still lots of automotive area's making money, I just paid ~$4000 for a ported head for a customer just recently.

An acquaintance of mine that race's 10.5 outlaw just built a spare motor to the tune of $60K.

Dave (Passenger) is running at least 90% of his parts for automotive these days.

The mid 90's Honda's gig is dead for sure, but there are lots of other performance area's that people are pouring money into. However if you are happy doing the used parts gig, then stick with that, there will always be a need for that.

I agree that the old Hondas that we have all spent so much time with are pretty much done. I don't chip and tune anywhere near what I used to. Land and sea came out with a dyno I could probably afford and I'm considering it, but I'm gonna have to start tuning things other than Hondas to make the payment.

Im hoping you also are going to weld some pipe onto that cut up manifold. You want those as straight as possible for obvious reasons

B16 rods are 134mm.

ITBs too small

Devcon fill the injector humps

There is no daswife

This build is doomed.

I am aware of what rods you have.  Keep thinking.  You're not good at it, but you aren't bad either.  You might figure something out.

What part throttle characteristics?  Alpha-n runs like ragged ass, and is a crude thing I wouldn't want done to my own car.

Reread your own thread.

You admit there is no Daswife, yet I am wrong on all levels?

would the b16 rods need any kind of notching in the d15 block?

your kidding right? d15 rod journals are 42mm unlike the common 45mm used in most other larger engines.

Only for some of the D15 cranks, champ.

I only know of the JDM D15B with larger crank journals. Are there others?

Yep, but you gotta dig a bit, and one requires a skim of the journals to bring it down to size.

I'm turning into Bone in my old age.
