Yes this is my build thread. I have had the car a few weeks and I have started getting my make on. I am picking up the actual motor I will be using this weekend.

Pulled the motor after work and getting ready to paint engine bay this weekend. If all goes well I will have the trans mounts for the cableshift trans in and the mock up motor bolted in.

And now you guys are caught up.
-
8v Counterflow on an 02A? Or is it an 02J picks are kinda blurry, and I haven't played with a vw trans in awhile.
-
The trans is a O2a. The motor thats in there is just a mock up motor. I am using a ABA crossflow with turbo. I am going to put some large injectors in it and chip tune it with a precision turbo (cant remember what was decided). I am trying to get 300whp and 350ft lbs. This is a very light car so it will haul ass like that.
I am picking up the motor tomorrow along with flywheel and starter.
-
Should probably put a D16 in it.
-
yeah i was really hoping for a honda motor. jhchrist is already doind a d series rabbit i think.

The stock 2l crossflow VW motor is a much better candidate for boost, much cheaper, and bolts in.

I know. They have a forged crank and rods from the factory but shitty cast slugs. And a d16 trans is probably on par with the O2A for glass components.
-
No way on the tranny. The O2a is alot stronger. The cast slugs in the 2l are fine if you dont detonate it. Alot of people use the 16v head on them and get lots of power. Most people lower the compression on these for pump gas but I live in a area where we get E85 all over the place so no big deal.
-
02a is a lot stronger then an 020, but about on par with a d series tranny. Lots of power on an ABA is a rather relative term.

O2A is a lot stronger than an O2O but it's still not a strong trans. 3rd and 5th strip pretty easy. They are disposable like D-series trans.

O2A with O2J gears for strength.

Don't build a vw if you want strength. :P
Nigger boost your raddo already.

They are only a problem when the syncros go to shit and people dump the clutch between gears without having it all the way engaged. The O2a was designed for a 3000lb plus car as well and thats where the problem is. making any power on one of these cars puts extreme pressure on the trans. The civic generally weighs alot less. In the rabbit it will be inpossible to fuck up.

I fucked 2 up in 3 months in a stripped MkII golf. Not even big power. At least do the bolt kit.
-
I am probably going to use a ATB diff in mine as soon as I fuck it up. Yes the diff is the weak link.
-
paint it red
call it the wed wabbit

Diff and input shaft, I broke one of each, before I moved on.

That depends on which D-series trans you're talking about.
-
Making power with the ABA aint a problem.
For what its worth, the stock Mk3 trans bolted to teh ABA (code escapes me in my drunken moment) is of similar gearset size and input shaft diameter of a dsm FWD turbo trans. Stock they aint shit. But surely they can be modified to accommodate a lightweight beast like a rabbit.

I like that rabbit, but don't like this rest. D16 are super cheap, trans are cheap and vitaras are good over 400hp.
-
That motor with pistons is good for over 400hp as well...
-
give jd back his camera and get one that has a flash
-
That motor with pistons is good for over 400hp as well...
That motor with a good tune is good for over 400whp just the way it is. I am going to be running it @ 300whp and 350wtq on E85 (sometimes its good to live in MN).
-
I disagree. The bottom end is, and maybe as a dyno queen it is, but as a track car, those pistons won't live very long at 400whp.
-
I know where some cheap 20over JE's are for an ABA if you are interested.
-
I know where some cheap 20over JE's are for an ABA if you are interested.
The buy four get two free kind?
-
i made 300whp and shitlaods of tq on a stock 130k ABA bottom end, and O2A trans (Peloquin LSD)... if i remember right that was at 14psi on the dyno, was run up to 17+ a couple times. took a fuckin beating also. solid dirty 2nds. :noel:
-
Just curious what clutch and engine management?
-
I like how people just hate on your shit when you're gonna boost it and do so on the cheap. Shit I can't wait to see it done looks like it would be handful. I know torque is nice, miata's have good torque for an I4, so I know what you mean there.
-
I ran a 4 puck unsprung clutchnet on mine. Digi 1 swap.
-
You on hardcore? This is Chuck B BTW.
-
I am on hardcore, but I have been out of vw's for quite awhile, and never did post much, I posted more back when it was the old hardcore. Same screen name. I built my 87 4 door golf back in 1999 - 2000 ish I was living in the lower mainland, and had a buddy that did the digi 1 tuning thing. I ran a 60-1. I only had it together for 3 months before I sold it. In that time I cracked 2 stock pistons, broke two transmissions (as mentioned above), 6 cv's, and a head gasket early on when we tried to spray it. Yes we did the ghetto stacking head gaskets.
It was one of those community cars that everyone had a piece of this and a piece of that, and that car is what we came up with. I never made it to the track with it, but it did well at both the chilliwack and roberts bank street drags. Won enough $$$ to keep it running.
-
What was your ID on old hardcore?
-
Same as it is here.
-
Just curious what clutch and engine management?
mine was like a EIP stage 4 or someshit, 6puck sprung. and was running MegaSquirt2.

I think I am going to go with the PT 5557 for turbo.

hit ice with jd bald back tires, corrected, then overcorrected and slid passenger front wheel into the jersey barrier. it's pretty bad.

Ouch, what the hell are you guys doing with ice already, I mean we have had a couple days of snow, but its still all dry pavement.

it was 31 degrees out, a light mist/fog, and i was on a 100 foot high overpass. it comes down to me being an idiot for not having decent tires... oh well. i hope insurance totals it.

this one has software on it. i'll buy it back and part it out, there's some retarded kids that will pay big money for the 6 speed and intake mani, head, special interior etc.

It's not software, it's firmware.
I want a copy. :noel:

I have the engine harness, ecu, and alternator. Just about scrounged up everything I need to put it together.

How much do you want for the 6 speed? What clutch does it have?

i don't even know if it will be totaled yet... but you've got dibs if it is. it's a south bend "faggot stage 4" if you're into stages... good for at least 500 ft pounds.
oh, and a queef/quaife lsd.

If it does let me know. The 5spd with a TDI is a little short for the highway cruise.

the 02m isn't much better. it's a 3.88 FD. at 60mph i'm turning around 26-2700.

yep

Nm, I will obviously have to get the TDI 6 speed, or the longer 5th. As that is more RPM then I turn now.

It is strange on the one I just posted as well ?
See EDIT above.
The dual layshaft design is weird, yet genius at the same time. The shorter shafts are generally less prone to flexing.
BTW, this sounds like a cool ass project. I have been somewhat of a fan of the early 80s VWs for a while now. I am just not quite ready to plunge into yet another segment of car culture.

Ok so I have an evo IIX turbo Im going to run for now. I am having trouble finding the injector constant in the chip file so that may end up limiting what I can do with the stock injection. The intake manifold is half made and the clutch is here. I hope to have the intake and exhaust manifolds done by the end of the weekend. I will post up some pics tomorrow.
-
...I am having trouble finding the injector constant in the chip file so that may end up limiting what I can do with the stock injection...
JD was messing with VW's for awhile there, maybe he has some incite.
-
I also have favors I can call in, and a knack for netsearching (Google for five hours straight, you eventually get the right combo of search terms and hit gold on page 12).
Forgive me for not remembering if you've mentioned, and for being to lazy to reskim the thread. What are you tuning with?
-
I use tunerpro and an ostrich. I have tuned a few of these OBD1 2l motronics with turbos before but they were pretty mild compared to whats going to be done here. Its pretty easy to just jack the main and full throttle fuel and timing maps to get the car to run good on 100% or so injector upgrade (went from 19# to 42# injectors). My plan is to run 1000cc injectors on E85 and to do this I will need to find the injector constant.
If your trying to contact Jeff he is not using the injector constant in his files (atleast the ones I have seen).

What? The oil is still going to drain out of the chra regardless. There's a max turbo angle? I had no idea. Seen plenty of srt4's and subies with the turbo tilted like that to fit em and make room for the downpipe. It shouldn't cause any problems at all.
Slappy, that bay is clean and so clutter free. I dunno mang. I'm attracted to it. The only thing i boned out about was i i didn't/can't see a turbo blanket on that thing. It LOOKS like it's far enough from the bmc to not cook the shit out of it. I bet that thing is a blast to drive.

I've seen up to 45 degrees, it'll work fine for a while but the turbo cokes and fails sooner. Oil doesn't flow through the CHRA, it comes out like whipped cream. Argument ender: show me an OEM who positions a turbo with it's CHRA angled more than 15 degrees from vertical.

Time to upgrade the turbo and convert the head to solid lifter to make power all the way to where the redline should be without floating valves.

No, it's time to get that car ready for about 3 months from now when that certain "show car" starts calling you out. :-*
Any track respect will only be gained by coming through me. :noel:
