I have a gateway m1617 laptop. Its got 222gb of hard drive. I have 104 gb's of movies and like 6 of pics and 2 of music on my comp. I also only have 1.67 gb of programs installed. Where is all the missing space. I have already cleaned out my temp folder and i dowloaded a program called treesize to see whats taking up all my space. It only showed me my videos, pics, songs, and programs. Basically what i already knew. So like a friend was telling me, im thinking its hidden folders somewhere, but i have no idea where to look. Im missing something like 70gigs worth of space here. Thats not exactly chump chang you know?

You probably have more than 1.67 gigs of programs installed, plus a lot of shit you're not even considering. Your situation sounds about right.
-
Hit F3 and search for anything over 100mb. Select system files, and hidden files.
Once it populates, sort by size and figure out what you dont want.
Ive had POS windows and other program shit the bed and develop huge >1gig log/error files.
Google earth was one that had a cache file approaching 2 gigs.

do you have any windows recovery, or backup or sleep or snapshots enabled?
-
Did you empty your recycle bin? ;D
caches, installed shit, hidden porn, etc
If it really pisses you off just wipe it and start fresh.
-
I have recovery, but its a seperate 10.4 gigs from my hard drive. And its only got like 2.88 free. I don't know how to check about the other stuff. Yes my recycle bin is empty. I don't know about caches, and shouldn't be any hidden porn.... And i have too much stuff to store on dvd's to just wipe it and start fresh. And i don't know where the hell my windows disk is. But i do have a friend who has windows 7 i could probably install. Would both our comps work off 1 windows disk?

Yeah...but you'll need to patch it to not be bothered about activation. I've heard that if you search a torrent site for "windows 7 bie" you can find an auto-patching ISO. They say you just burn it to disc, start installation, don't put in a serial, choose to activate later, and it takes care of the rest.
To back up what you want to keep you don't have an external harddrive or anything to use? You can buy 1TB externals for under $100 now.
If you do reinstall the OS be sure to just dump the "recovery" partition they have.

Look up disk detective.. it will show you exaclty what's taking up your space. I found that my old compaq laptop (now traded to astrovannin for an accord) had 3 copies of windows on it

Does it mater if you are using Vista or not?
When I did this on my office computer (Win. XP Pro) I get no system files or hidden files as an option.
-

You have to select advanced. It's under there.

Can you relink us to that program, sir? I think the OP would appreciate it.

He has 50 gigs of free space with over 100 gigs of movies plus music plus a more realistic 20~ gigs of programs. He's right where he should be.
