I'm well aware it's not a Lenovo or IBM, but dollar for dollar, this laptop is priced about $300 less than it should be due to the processor mixup and other extra goodies.  I especially like the fact the HDMI output does video AND audio.  Makes it a great option as a BluRay player.

Yeah, good deal, but for the love of god - it's bluray.

For some reason, "blue ray" annoys the fuck out of me.

I have 4 in my room right now(one for me, one maybe for my parents, one for my uncle, and one for Craigslist).  Its live in stores.  It will be online this weekend.  If you choose to wait, you can get 10% Bing Cashback, but that's assuming these laptops are still in stock/available and are still the wrong CPU.

I should also mention that any laptop over $499 you can get 18 months interest free(you must make monthly minimum payments and must pay off the full amount by the end of the 18 months).

So this will play halo 1 and your 1080p blu-rays jittery as hell because the gfxcard sucks cattle cock. What's the big deal? Get a fucking used thinkpad with a built-in ati card and call it a day. When I play divx on a 50" plasma via my t60's vga port and I'm happy as a clam.

It would be great if you knew half of what you were talking about.  HD video can be handled one of two ways.  Primarily by the video card or using the video card and the processor.  With this computer, they use the second option, but the video card really doesn't suck that badly.  128mb of dedicated memory is pretty solid for a laptop.  If Atom based HTPCs can handle HD video, I don't think this laptop will think twice about it.  Not to mention there are about 20 people in that massive thread talking about how it plays BluRay fine.  The only person that complained was trying to play PAL.

The graphics card in my T61 is nothing to write home about, and you need a much lower end machine to waste on rendering bluray 1080p crap.

If you want to pick out parts that suck on this laptop, I'd start with the HD.  5400rpm is kind of low rent BS.  7200 vs 5400 makes a world of difference.  If you really want to see the thing fly, SSID with the OS and your favorite programs would be pretty ridiculous on this thing.  The only other thing that is just passable is 4GB of ram.  With 64bit Win7, I'd want to see 6GB of ram.  Lastly, it's in a Gateway case, so it probably suffers from Gatewate idiocy.

Even with all that said, the laptop is worth $800, and they are selling it for $500+ tax.  If someone wants a general purpose laptop, this is a great buy for the money.

SSID?

Sorry, I meant SSD.  Solid state hard drive.

That's like running 2200cc injectors on T3 based setup, and not understanding why that's retarded.

I use laptops for portable usage of CAD and Adobe Suite at times.  In which case, both of those programs use a lot of resources.  The solid state HD is just a nice thing to have, and would really allow the processor to show its stuff.  The ram is just nice to have because when doing 3d rendering, you can't have enough ram/memory.

Am I going to upgrade this laptop?  Absolutely not.  I'm just citing what I think are the weakest features of the hardware.  If I got back into seriously doing either of those programs, I would just build a $1000 quad core machine that would be 6x the machine this laptop is.

SSID?

Sorry, I meant SSD.  Solid state hard drive.

Now you don't know what you're talking about. SSD has been, is, and will be a farce in the majority of cases until they make flash memory that isn't restricted to entire block or entire page writes/reads. Even the pcie cards that use ddr2 system memory & a battery are dogs. Not only that, but most SSD drives actually do not save much energy - turning your screen down 1 brightness level will save more. A $500 vs $50 cpu or gpu will have a huge performance gap, but I find it odd HDD vs SSD does not:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/SSD-versus-HDD-in-comparison.18750.0.html (http://www.notebookcheck.net/SSD-versus-HDD-in-comparison.18750.0.html)

I can then show you some old cards with 128mb of memory that still aren't worth a damn. The one I just put in my mom's pc isn't the slowest 9xxx ati makes, but it's 128mb doesn't do shit for it. Intel doesn't exactly use GDDR3 in their cheap shit either. To JD: I know a moble x1300 64mb isn't crazy (yours is probably a x1400 128mb), but mine will play nearly any 3d game on lower detail as fast or faster than my old 9800 pro 256mb ever did. In the mean time, most onboard video has problems playing with 3-d in a flash advertisement, some with simple page scrolling (given the retardedly bloated web pages now).

As far as system memory, I really don't understand why people think >2gb of memory is necessary. It's enough to run 3 virtual machines at once w/o missing a beat, meaning you are using 4 pc's worth of memory. Assuming your OS even uses caching properly and predicted what your plans were, your SSD's claimed benifit will be moot once it loads the initial files the OS needs, as it pulls the rest for caching in the background. If people truely understood how long it takes to generate 4gb of data in memory, let alone read it from the HDD (sorry, SSD), they'd understand how retarded it is to NEED that much memory. The only time I've needed 4gb's was when I had a 3.2gb database that was being rebuilt, and it was also the only time my quad went above 75% usage. In that case, I borrowed 2gb from a different machine. If anyone still doesn't believe me, find a dummy file creator, make a 2gb file, then rename it as a txt file. Then open it with notepad...

Cliffs: ssd is hype atm, onboard vid sucks regardless, and terabytes of system memory is useless outside a server farm.

I'd reiterate what I said before - buy a slightly used thinkpad and you'll be just as happy, as well as $100-200 richer.

i missed a dual core thinkpad  on CL for $150  >:(

i had a ssd in some gaynetbook i returned,  fyi they read real fast and write slower then a spinning hard drive.. or the other way around i forget.. so its only fast one way or somthing like that

also heads up if anyone needs a cheap laptop and has a microcenter near them, they have a brand new widescreen single core amd laptop for $299 no rebates or bullshit

Did you see it here or on Slickdeals?  I'm just curious.

I'm typing on the computer right now.  Keyboard is kind of bleh, but everything else so far is tits.  I haven't done much with it, so I can't say how great it really is, but so far I'd say its at least worth $500.

I saw it on here after I got home from work, and had been waiting for a good deal for a new laptop, and jumped on it. They had just got the shipment of them in at the Best Buy here in Jax,FL.

Good stuff.  I'm glad I could point out a smokin deal.

As for anyone that says that 4 gigs of RAM is plenty, BS!  Idle, the thing sucks up a gig.  Load up some streaming video and general internet bullshit and you will easily hit 2-2.5GB.  Doing actual CAD/Graphic work, I would think 4GB is just passable.  Win7, like Vista, still requires 1GB of RAM to just run the OS IMO.  3GB left for just running applications is adequate, but not fantastic.

I downloaded a 4GB 1080p version of Zomebieland last night and the thing plays it with ease.  I imagine a BR disc might be a bit more taxing, but I don't think it will make the computer hiccup at all.

It's just a shame Microsoft Media Extender to the Xbox360 isn't a bit more up to date with codecs.  It supports m2ts files but I tried to play it and it wouldn't play.  I'll dick around with it again tonight, but I'm thinking its just not going to work.  PS3 Media Server doesn't play nicely with Win7, so I'll try TVersity tongith as well.

EDIT: Not that any of you really care, but this deal is now dead.  It took BestBuy 4 days, but they are now changing the price to $699 and not honoring the price in their ad.  I'm sure after it is $699, it will go up to $799 regular price.

Get a refund on the warranty from BestBuy and get one from www.squaretrade.com (http://).  $500 computer should be $100 for 3 years.  Use the promocode "Superbowl20" and you will get it for $80.  THIRTY30 might work giving you 30% off, max of $30 so the warranty will be something like $70.

Fuck Best Buy and their warranties.  They suck.  Just go through squaretrade and get 3x as long of a warranty for 30% less.
