That is awesome.
It is quite amazing what a 5 axis can do.
The people involved with the software and hardware design for those machines are certifiable bad asses IMO. I wonder how involved the programming is for the operator.
Seems like an incredibly wasteful design for a helmet.

I use to program 5-axis mills and a 5-axis waterjet. Actually setup for the operator is easier becuase there is basically no work involved. All part offsets are just rotary centers and for some parts it makes programming much easier becuase you don't need to have multiple setups. As you can see in the video they only had 2 setups.
Even though where I work now we have 9 Axis Okuma mill turns, nothing is cooler to me than getting all axis' dancing on a mill.

Usually with 5 axis machine you have X,Y,Z, than a rotational around both of those A,B,C (A rotates around X ect..) When you get into the 9 to 12 axis range, you usually have live tooling like a quill which is another and when you get into sub-spindles you also add some axis. But when you get into that many axis, one you have a small crash it throws everything off and gets real expensive to fix.
Not like a VMC where you can try to rapid the Z through the table and shake it off like nothing ;)

fucked up spindles, fucked up quills, fucked up servos, not all of them just shake it off. if the machine dosnt have time to slow down its going to crash hard. i like the new machines with cutter detection, now they can let any $8.00/hr dumb ass put any fucking tool they want in there and not crash the machine.
look at all this technology, this means we are all getting smarter.

if they used coolant no one could see how cool there machine is, its better to just plug up the tools.
