Two times the reciprocal of a number equals 32 times the reciprocal of 40. Find the number.
One pipe fills a pool in 6 hours. A second pipe can fill the same pool in 4 hours. How long would it take to fill the pipe if both pipes were working?
Erin rides her bike at a constant speed for 21 miles. She then returns home at the same speed but takes a different route. Her return trip takes one hour longer and is 26 miles. Find her speed.

I only do ones like
"Johnny has x amount of apples"
-
The first one is 5/2.
2(1/x) = 32(1/40)
All of these seem like basic algebra. Good little exercise. I'll do the other two when I have more time.

That actually helped a lot, i can generally do the math, but the word problems fudge up my brain.

2.4 hours, or 2 hours 24 minutes

Probably not the most efficient way, but quickest way I could come to the solution:
26 miles - 21 miles = 5 miles
1 hours / 5 miles = 12 minutes Can be skipped. Bitch took an hour to go 5 miles.
5 miles per hour.
She's one slow cunt.

Let x = number
.
2(1/x) = 32/40
.
2/x = 32/40,,,,,,,cross multiply
.
2*40 = 32x
.
2.5 = x,,,,,,,,answer
.
.
check,,,,,,,2/2.5 = 32/40 =.8,,,,,,ok

One pipe fills a pool in 6 hours. A second pipe can fill the same pool in 4 hours. How long would it take to fill the pipe if both pipes were working?
v=rt
1=r(6)
1/6=r
v=rt
1=r(4)
1/4=r
1=((1/4)+(1/6))t
1=(3/12 + 2/12)t
1=(5/12)t
12/5=t
2.4hrs = t
Erin rides her bike at a constant speed for 21 miles. She then returns home at the same speed but takes a different route. Her return trip takes one hour longer and is 26 miles. Find her speed.
v=d/t
v=21/t (to destination)
v=26/(t+1) (from destination
21/t = 26/(t+1)
21(t+1)=26t
21t + 21 = 26t
21=5t
t=4.2
v=21/4.2
v=5mph

Yeah, I'm not good with putting shit into equations, but can usually "visualize" or whatever how to do it.
I did:
1 / (1/6 + 1/4)
High school, used to do this math competition that was between schools every year. I'd get out of class for an hour, go to the auditorium, they'd pass out papers with shit like what's above, and we'd have to answer them. Fortunately only the answer mattered and didn't need to show my work or they would have been confused...
-
Yeah, I know. Engineering school kind of teaches you to have the formulas in your tool box and just apply them as you need them. It's hard for me to do math now without building from formulas after learning that way all the time. Plus teachers love to see work written out like that, even if it's not the most efficient method to get the answer.

i did this shit in my head.

i did this shit in my head.
This, I always went about things i differently than was being taught. I aced math courses, all the way to 11th grade. Got there and my teacher wanted work shown. I went from a's to flunking math in one year, just because I couldn't show work. Sorry, I'm smart enough to do this shit without paper.

...Sorry, I'm smart enough to do this shit without paper.
Are you calling me stupid?
FUCK YOU.
Anyone wanna help me with my thermodynamics homework?
Lol.

Always fucking hated this shit.
And I always hated teachers that wanted you to "check your work" by reversing it all.
I'M FUCKING RIGHT DONT MAKE ME WASTE TIME.

HALP!!!!
It probably wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't sick and I actually had some motivations this semester.
Blah.

Not at all. People have different preferences and methods to arrive at the same conclusion. I SUCK at doing shit on paper, but I can do it in my head fine. If I were to document my work, noone could make heads or tails of it. It would just be random scribblings of my notes as I work through the problem in my head.
Thermodynamics, I have a small amount of field experience, but no formal education in that field. I did annealing, and preheats on large, thickwall pipes in powerplants, papermills, and refineries.

I was just giving you shit.
:P
I am one of those people that has to write stuff out most of the time. The problem is, at least with the engineering path I have chosen, is that I am generally very informal in how I write things down. It is mostly stuff that I have to look at to work though. I am way too much of a visual learner/thinker to be a blind fucker at the same time. It makes no sense.
lol.
-
Me too, I'm a very visual learner. I have to actually DO the task, to fully grasp it, or have a VERY good mental image of what is going on. I need to find another heat treating job, anyone know of any?
