do those have the vacuum actuated 4wd like the older units?

i used to have a 80s s10 pickup and i would have to manually engage the 4wd with a clamp cause the vacuum actuator was broken

Yeah, if it has vacuum actuators, then either a hose went bad or an actuator has a leak/ is broke. If it's electric, have fun fixing that.

Go to the front differential look at the switch.

It will either have 2 hoses or 3 wires.

2 hose=> find the leak and check for cracks on the switch and most likely replace it.

3 wire=> check and see if the wires are damaged. Sometimes you can move the wires and the front differential engages.

That is what I was gonna do and see what else is going on under there...

How cheap and easy is the fix if they dont turn?

most of the time its sum thing stupid and cheap. I bet the front drive shaft turns but the front diff isn't locking in.

Sweet there is a local with one that has a full sti drivetrain swap. It's pretty cool even has sti seats clashing with the wicked 80's interior.

That's got to be light enough that it's rendered the merely strong STi drivetrain bulletproof, and doesn't load the engine to the point that the factory pistons are as weak as they are in an STi.

It looks like those were still vacuum actuated.  For some reason I thought they were electric.

BTW, they all came with the rear seats.  Subaru cheesed those in there in an attempt to bypass the truck tax of the 80s, and it worked.

ya i know that it, it was callled the chicken tax
more info on the tax
"The Chicken Tax — actually a 25% tax on potato starch, dextrin, brandy, and light trucks"

"Passenger cars imported into the US were charged only a 2.5% tariff, compared to 25% on light trucks."

a lot of them have been removed. but if you look around can pick up a set for about 100-200$.
