maybe i am missing something though, is it just the shape that dictates the flow like that or is there something inside there that gets rid of the turbulence?

They give you the razor and sell you the blades.

but also look how far the tungsten is from the workpiece. i think you only benefit from a lens if you got your tungsten out like an inch.

Well the whole point is to keep air from getting swirled into the flow of gases. So on parts where sheilding gas coverage is 100% needed like say titanium welding then gas lenses work great.

Cost, it is a lot cheaper to send you a standard collet body/cup then a gas lense. Also the gas lense isn't needed on all things. Say body work where it's getting grinded down. Having a nice colored weld isn't needed.

Not everything is a nice lap joint in life. I know the average ramhorn manifold benifits from a gas lense. Rock out with your rod out.
