Title: My Credit Score is insanely good
Post by: bigwig on February 22, 2010, 07:17:16 PM
813.

How?  Probably because I have 23+ years of credit history, but I'm only 24+ years old.  Evidently when I was 1, Discover made a mistake and gave everyone in my immediate family a card.  My parents never canceled the cards.  Just let them sit.  I don't even know if they used them.  Either way, the credit cards are in good standing so it boosted my score like crazy.

It's just a shame I can't get any decent credit from a credit card.  It's amazing that my main card will only let me have a $500 limit.

That is crazy, I only have 10 years of credit history and a lower score 791, and my main and only cc has 50X that limit.

That's why only idiots lend credit to their phony credit score number. Even good credit can't get credit, so fuck em.

If you want a higher limit just call and ask.  When I bought my 4-wheeler I called the credit card company on the way to the store and they raised my limit to whatever I wanted

Credit cards are great if your not a fucking idiot.  I use them to buy everything and pay them off in full each month.  I usually get a couple hundred in cash back each year for using them.  Nothing like getting paid to use someone else's money.

I have some other CC's so my total credit isn't $500, but they are all store CC's.  I opened a Circuit City chase card in 07 with a $6000 limit.  Never bought anything with it though.  I have a Best Buy CC that I use sparingly.  I think it has a $3500 limit.  I just used it to get 18 months interest free on some laptops.  I have my shitty Mastercard from Capital One that I use primarily, with a $500 limit.  I can't even take advantage of the 0% interest because the limit is so damn low.  I also had a US education loan which I always paid on time and paid off very quickly.

If I ran the score again, I think it would drop since I have $1000 on the Best Buy card and a bit more money on the Mastercard, but the most it would drop is a few points.

Overall, I can't see why my score would be so excellent other than having the 23+ years of credit history.  I just have some basic accounts that I pay always on time and quickly.  I have no real debt as well.  So, I'd expect my score in the 700's, but 813 is just ridiculously high.

So basically, get your kid's a credit card ASAP and pay the phone bill with it.  When they are in their 20's with 20 years of credit history, they will thank you.

I've tried, but I will try again.  They always tell me, "since you are a new account, we are need to evaluate your account for a longer period of time and we will call you when we are willing to increase your credit limit."

Now that I actually know my score, I'm going t call them up and get them to raise the limit.  That card is a rewards card that I'd like to use more.  If the amount is questionable, I end up having to put it on my debit card which just pisses me off.

My one and only CC is the first real credit I had, and I have had it for 10 years. With that being said they opened me on a $3000 limit.  ???

Didn't they just change the credit score ratings recently?  What is the highest you can have?

Something sounds wrong if you can't get a card with a limit over $500. You can periodically request a limit increase and they usually do it. I started at $1000 and now one card I have has around a $9000 limit.

I was born in '83, but I have one account on my record starting in 1979  O0

FICO says it can go up to 850.

I signed up for that card in April of '09.  Remember what was going on then?  Although my score rules, I don't have a ton of history.  They probably saw that and decided to be dicks.  I haven't tried in a while to get the limit bumped recently.  It also has 1 year interest free, so they probably won't increase the limit until the 13th month.

I'll bother them tomorrow to see if they will bump my limit.

Some cards you have to call for a rate limit increase, others you can simply click a button after logging in to your account online (Citi does this)

Credit and credit scoring is the biggest scam ever.

Having a credit card for 24 years and not ever doing anything with it is worse than having shitty credit. It shows you can have a card in the drawer. My guess is that they don't want to lend you money because you haven't shown you are responsible with the credit.

You're an idiot.  If anyone pulled a hard credit check, they'd recognize that the credit score might be inflated, but still very good because I have no debt and a great payment history.

Credit and credit scoring is fine.  It's weak people who can't control their spending habits that have issues with it.  It's one of the few systems built upon rewarding people with a common sense.

Who's an idiot?

You're supposed to think you're being rewarded so you become then  comfortable using it.  After the comfort period, you go over your limit in a time of crisis and they've got you on the hook, fucktard.

Also, don't take this post as me giving frank a compliment.  He's still an idiot.

If you can't manage using credit, then you are still an idiot.  Again, it rewards people with common sense.  The thing is, there is nothing common about common sense.

If you are confident about your ability to manage credit, you're already where they want you to be.

Credit scores are over rated IMO. Banks just want to see that you are not a complete idiot and have a confirmed income. Like a score in the 600s and a stable job. This would be on a secured loan of course. (Car, Boat, Home etc)

I work for a credit card company, we are loan-sharks through and through. I believe in freedom of contract and the ability for people to fuck themselves over. I have less faith in the average person everyday.

I have two charged off accounts on my credit and a couple other bad trade lines. Still approved for more $ than I could ever handle on a house, and have multiple credit cards opened even after all the negative shit. Banks say they have tightened their belts and learned, I am not so sure about that.

Im tellin you, having a credit card for 20 years and never using it isnt going to give you a score of 813.  something else is going on there but its not all just one lonely card with Zero purchases on it.

Credit and credit scoring is fine.  It's weak people who can't control their spending habits that have issues with it.  It's one of the few systems built upon rewarding people with a common sense.

Credit scores may have more defined values now, but that's not what lenders look at. What they do look at depends on the company, the person, the alignment of the stars... In short your number simply shows YOU that you aren't a piece of shit. FYI you really don't want to personally look it up more than once a year. You also don't want 50 lenders looking it up each year, so don't flood the market with CC aplications.

The main way to build credit is just that - spend & pay. Don't be late, don't fill a limit by more than 50% consistently (paying early several times a month helps), don't open more than 1-2 cards a year, don't have insanely high limits (shows you could 'bank' and run), have a loan or two that you pay on time...man I forget all the things, but they are kinda weird. You have to show that you will use credit, but not overuse/abuse credit.

I held a $500 limit for a few years because it was enough, then recently (I think 9/08 as the market was tanking) I got $7k on a rewards card. After that my other card magicly went up to $5k. I paid tuition a few times with it, basicly all my bills and all purchases (havn't used cash in ages), and I've received a few hundred cash back so far. No annual fees either. It's a Chase/Amazon.com card - I get 3% there, 2% gas/groceries, 1% everything else. Works as a regular CC. I actually want to change my other card to rewards card, since they offer a better deal for gas & groceries.

Im tellin you, having a credit card for 20 years and never using it isnt going to give you a score of 813.  something else is going on there but its not all just one lonely card with Zero purchases on it.

Lol, they aren't crack dealers.

Don't use your credit card in the time of crisis.  Its ok to go over but never anything more than you can pay off in 3 months.  If you use your credit cards to dig yourself out of a finanical crisis than your an idiot and are not responsible enough to own a credit card.  Its like putting out a house fire with a flame thrower.   :-\

One time I didn't get my credit card bill in the mail and they tried to charge me $60.00 in fees for missing a payment.  I called them up, said I never got my bill and they dropped all the charges in 5 minutes without even having to argue with them.  If you take care of your buisness and understand the concept of 21%apr you'll never get into throuble with a credit card and you'll never have a problem with credit card companies.

+1

In the 5+ years I've had credit cards I've only not paid the entire balance at the end of the month once or twice, and that was when I was 18.  (https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.realhomemadeturbo.com%2Fforum%2FSmileys%2Fclassic%2Fjew.gif&hash=1409187cb2623507fb401b4fe62e8fb152f296cf) Last time I checked my score was ~820, but I've never had a loan or anything like that, so I really don't understand that, but it doesn't concern me either. Also my three credit card limits are ~3k, ~4k and ~11k. The last one keeps raising the limit even though I never use it, and I just use my discover to get rewards points back ($) and pay it off monthly.

Like whitey said, if you're smart with your credit cards you won't have problems. Its the people who have $100 in the bank and charge $10,000 on their cards that end up having issues.

Also,

If you are confident about your ability to manage credit, you're already where they want you to be.

This just sounds like straight up paranoia

You are the idiot. I just went through all of this credit bullshit. I have/had several cards in my name, never used them. Just like you. Credit was ok, because of a few other things, but not bad. Several lenders straight up told me...you have a decent score, but you haven't used any credit.  :-\ Just telling you my experiences. I still got my loans, somehow you cant get more than $500 though...

The main way to build credit is just that - spend & pay. Which is exactly what I was saying. Who cares if the dude has a credit score of 820. He hasnt shown anything to make himself worthy other than he can keep a CC in the drawer.

That 820 might look nice, but...its goes back to my saying...its the biggest scam ever.
