Title: Help or Hurt... 205/55/16 to 205/50/15 tire size...
Post by: reddevil on February 25, 2010, 02:47:52 AM
So I am currently trapping 117.xx @ 6900 rpm at the finish line with the 205/55/16 tires.

Calculations say if I change to 205/50/15, I would hit 108.5 @ 6900rpm. Slightly larger tire 225/50/15 I would hit a about 112.xx @ 6900 rpm.

So.....

Technically I get out of the hole a bit quicker, but will the fact I need to shift to 5th be benificial?

I am making about 400/400 power....

Preload + semi slicks still= broken axles with this hp on early wrx or legacy gt Axles.

I would stay with the taller tyre so you dont loose tyre length (not width).  Shifting into 5th before the line would be a waste of time UNLESS you plan on more hp. You could just put some 4.4's in next time you do a gear or syncro. What are your 60fts?

2.0 cause of bad tires and early season slick track.

This tranny has done 1.75 60' times in the gutted wagon.

I take it its not a 20 min job like a civic.

How strong is the tranny/diff ?

Na its all easy to pull out. We havnt had a diff problem yet but have stripped the teeth off 5 third gears, killed heaps of syncro's on track days and blown a few other gears. I found that using a twin plate clutch hurts 3rd gear more. We broke 1 front and 1 rear axle on 1 launch, also broke about 3 more axles that day on semi slicks. This is with between 380 and 480whp on a 97 STI sedan.

Oooooh they hurt.

Mainly because I could not hook up.  My 60's were never better than 2.0....

I had ONE chance to break 12.5, but because I have never shifted into 5th at the dragstrip, I missed 5th and ran 12.6 @ 102.

The rest of the runs I was hitting redline right before the damn traps so shifting was a waste.   Redline = 112.35 using 205/55/15 tires for me.

I felt I had one Awesome run in me.....  wow what a hookup in third!   what pull!

Then I shifted back into 1st....  The ONLY time I have ever done this.   >:(  To top it off, I was against a new camero, it would have been SO FLIPPING awesome to stomp it with my best run ever...  Instead I did a 16.6 @ 109....

So....  Back to the crappy 16"!

Its got potential if it ran 12.6 @102 and a 16.6@109. keep working on that 60ft and get some low 12's :noel:
