Stay in Afghanistan another year with the current company, end up running my own AOR with 10+ bases out here and make about a quarter million take home next year and possibly stay on contract for 3-4 more years.
or
Stay here the remainder of the year, then hop on another contract for 6 months in Antarctica making about double the previous figure over that 6 months doing the same satellite communications job
or
Do good enough out here that I have a secure 80k job back home in the states and don't have to be out in BFE getting rocketed or -90* temps for the rest of my life.
Opinions?
-
i cant say because i dont know how much it does or does not suck where you are, or antarctica, and is the 80k job back here gona be around a while? never know i just watched 30days episode about outsourcing, you never know around here they might be training red dot indians right now to do your job
-
80k job will be around for a while. I'll describe where I am heading to as the most remote base in Afghanistan. It's at about 8800 feet above sealevel, and gets rocketed so often they can't get any hard buildings put up. It will suck, but they are paying me more to do it, plus I volunteered for it so I'd look good.

Henry will probably die overseas. however, he would more than likely henry his way out of certain death.

Mine as well sir. tried to line up a gig that would give me clearance but they wanted me on at like 12 an hr PART time.
cannot pay mortgage on that sir.

Henrying the Reaper, there's a mental image.
-
shit i don't know
i would love the opportunity to work in antarctica.
since the job market is not so good, i think the job with the longest contract possibility is the best though
Take job advice from this guy. He know's what he's talking about.

do you disagree with what i said?
I love you.

So your choices are Suicide, freezing ass cold, or home and normal for 80k id probably rock freezing for the 6 months and then come home. Then i would hook up my boy and see if i could squeeze him in somewhere. :)

I don't know if having clearance is as big of a deal there as it is here, but here I know in the past I missed out on quite a few good jobs because I didn't have it... if it's the same there I'd work there as well as another job just to get it.
Look at jobs in Huntsville, and you'll see what I mean. Fortunately I already received my secret security clearance at my previous job.
-
nothing. hate you.
Who do you hate, Henry?
-
dude this area around Hampton Roads VA solely exists because of military. between Richmond, DC Norfolk, the shipyard you aren't getting shit for a job without one and i cant find anywhere that will take me on. I got a 6 month old at the house so i have reservations against working like 16 hours a day cause i wont get to see my kid at all really.
Im tryin to see if i cant put some other shit together, if i can finish my damn MCSA i might could find a place more willing to sponsor my clearance.
-
Take the jobs that pays most, then hopefully you can come back to the 80k a year job

nothing. hate you.

I GROW WEARY OF YOUR GAMES OLD MAN.

I wouldn't want to go to work in a combat zone. $80k wouldn't be enough for me to go over there. $125k would get me to think twice. $150k would make me think REALLY hard on the subject. $200k, wrap me up in bubble wrap, I'm going to war!
With that said, if I could get paid near the same or a bit less to work in Antarctica, I'd do so. I ASSume Antarctica is much safer and overall better. Women don't come into either equation so you're most likely jerking off for however long you are stuck there. Antarctica is a tougher location to work in because you will be stuck inside for most of the year and that does wonders to people.
If you can get an $80k job right now in the US, I'd do that. Just live like a college student with a cheap car and renting a room, and you should be able to save $50k a year. Do that for 3-5 years, and you should create a very solid base for yourself.
-
You dont read good or i dont one or the other.
I read it as 80 home, 250k to go to war and more to go to freezerland. which is why i voted freezer land.
-
How about you stay there in the nut sweat sandbox and get them to hook me up with the job in the deep freezer?
-
I read it just fine. I answered the question without answering the question.
Since you need further translation: I wouldn't go work in a war zone for less than $150k. If he is getting paid less than that, it is not worth it. I'd try to transfer to Antarctica. I'd be willing to sit there for a while at $80-150k, but the second I could secure a job stateside for $80k, I'd so so and just live cheap and build a good base. Clear enough now, nog?
-
Go to Antarctica. When you are done in 6 months there you will have 500K That should last you more than long enough to find a comfortable job and or wait out this bullshit economy. If you dont go to Antarctica kick me some contact info so I can take the job.
-
Die slow, Jack boot pirate.
-
I say come home and manage a ups store. You can henry the whole country.
-
i would say antartica also, unless the pay is quite a bit better in the war zone.
-
Antarctica is supposed to have a higher death rate.
-
Antarctica is supposed to have a higher death rate.
I would believe it, it wouldn't take much of a fuck up to kill you there.
-
Antarctica is supposed to have a higher death rate.
You mean suicide rate? :P
-
me: antartica is dangerous?
qikenuf22: ummm
its aparently easy to die out there
me: Fuck
qikenuf22: or at least get srsly hurt
me: go outside, Henryscicle?
qikenuf22: -90* or less
basically
-
I'd rather die in Antarctica over some Jihad blowing me up in Afghanistan. That's just me.
-
Job people that I submitted apps for, you should be hearing something shortly towards the end of the month :) It is just depending on when the FOBs are due to open. Afghanistan isn't bad, but where I am going in a bit is the most attacked base in Afghanistan on a regular basis. We'll see if I can Henry death out there. Honestly, working here is pretty damn easy. I get paid well to not do shit.

I know I'm stating the obvious, but you are getting paid well to not do shit in a war zone. Does this company offer positions in places other than war zones? I'd be down for a stupid easy job where I get paid well and have to live somewhere shitty just as long as I don't have to worry about being blown up or my dick freezing off.

From what I gather the reason you make the good money is because of the hazard pay.
-
Yeah, but there are sketchy places in Eastern Europe, Africa, & South America. I'd be more willing to work there for whatever reason.
