My roommate found an iPhone in the melting snow that had been runover by a car. Its one of the older generation ones. Amazingly it still turned on and you can see the screen is broken. I took off the front panel thing and found other ones on ebay. Is it possible to put a new screen on this and use it like a touch? What does jail breaking it do?
I r iPhone noob. I just got my first iPod (a 1st gen touch for free) about a month ago.

I live in a town of 4,000 "normal people" plus 6,000 students (75% of which are male, which is unimportant other than to point out how much this place sucks).
I have a good feeling that it was reported missing and likely insured. This actually isn't the first iPhone found in front of our house this winter. It's just the first broken one.

So you live at a gay resort. You may get aids from handling that thing you don't know where it's been.

Just shut your modem off then plug it in ;)
-
Fix the screen, jail break it, take out the SIM and sell it on Ebay.

Nobody will come after you for a phone you found in the snow...
Fix it and keep it.
-
Fixing a first gen iphone with a broken screen used to be pretty expensive since the glass and screen supposedly are fused together you have to replace the whole front.
-
I know I have a tracking app on my iphone incase I ever lose it, but I doubt that one does.
My girlfriend needs one and would probably give you 90 bucks for it.
If you wanted a new screen apple would just replace it entirely with that one as a core for 250 bones.
jailbreaking just allows you to use other sim cards and "aftermarket" apps. If I was you I'd pull the simcard out before even turning it on incase they have tracking on it.
-
plug that shit in, worst case scenario they track it (which they won't) just tell them you were trying to get a number off of it to return it to its rightful owner.

+1
Can you read the screen at all?
-
yea order the parts to fix it and throw it up on ebay, the 1g iphones can be hacked/jail broken and used on various providers so you can catch a pretty penny for it if it dosen't look like it was run over by a car lol....but do it soon if you are because the new iphone is probably gonna come out in june or so and the the 1g's will probably drop in value...but who knows...if you don't want to deal with it I might toss you a few bucks and take it off your hands as a spare phone for my 2g
-
Don't worry about tracking... I sold hundreds of phones and never had an issue.
I take that back, CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) can be a PITA because they will blacklist phones that are reported lost/stolen.
Being that GSM isn't "locked" to a specific provider (well, it is, but can easily be unlocked), you don't have to worry about it.
If you're completely lazy, you can try selling the phone on ebay for parts. If it's working (except for the screen) you might be able to get some beer/gas money for minimal effort.

I was wrong. Its actually a 3G. I was playing on it and everything works fine but you can see where the screen is broken in the bottom right corner and the touchpad thing is cracked. I'm not sure what im going to do with it. Most likely sell it. All it needs is the screen and touchpad.
-
:PThe 3g is a lot cheaper to fix the glass on. You may be in luck. err its impossible give it to me.
-
Well shit. I had no idea that this would actually be worth anything. $75 shipped? :noel:

You should send me a couple pictures if you are serious about that. With it on preferably.
I had a 1g that the touchscreen failed and I miss the damn thing. :'(

Thats it on. I took the sim card out and did a system restore.

Here it is taken apart. I cut the ribbon cable for the screen because i didn't want to risk damaging the connector on the phone side as it's a bit tricky. It doesn't matter because that would be part of the new front panel.
-
Oh and the thing was in a rubber case to the back looks perfect. Basically a new front panel and this thing would look brand new.
-
I don't know if it will still work, Thats a pretty good crushin'.
