Settings > Locale and Text (9th one down) > Select locale (top one) > Engrish

That's on 1.6 though, and may be different on yours.

What did they have on it?  Cyanogen?

And yeah, if you find the English v1.6 from Tmob somewhere (shouldn't be hard) the flashing process is pretty easy and it'll definitely set you to English.

That may help, looks like a bigger PITA than I expected.  Would help to know what you're on now.

Settings > bottom one

Current official firmware is 1.6 and build DRC83

Here's a link to how to flash and the files needed (which it sounds like you already know/have) along with some other useful links
http://www.brighthub.com/mobile/google-android/articles/42677.aspx (http://www.brighthub.com/mobile/google-android/articles/42677.aspx)

I've only flashed mine once and that was to get the cupcake update without waiting for it to reach me OTA.

is being a bitch right now, it won't mount so i can't access the card from my comp. i think it might be because the card is brand new and not formatted but i should still at least be able to access and format it through my comp.

Maybe a dumb question, but is this a new line of service?  Do they have the proper G1 data plan?  Do they possibly have the simcard number wrong?

What did you flash it with?

Post by: Jorsher on March 05, 2010, 12:53:37 AM
Also, try the reset again.

Turn phone off

Turn back on while holding home and the power button

Release them then press alt and w at the same time

Oh, and what are the APN settings when it tries to connect?

Post by: random-strike on March 05, 2010, 12:55:35 AM

You flashed it with one of the official roms?

Don't see how it would stick like that with an amuriken rom.

Post by: Jorsher on March 05, 2010, 01:07:55 AM
you named the update update.zip?

definitely not flashing correctly or it'd wipe out everything including his chinese bullshit.

and yeah, good point about the apn.

My guess is he has some chinese apn shit in there or AT&T or some other carrier so it's not connecting to tmobiles.
Title: Re: g1 peoples
Post by: random-strike on March 05, 2010, 01:14:17 AM

Did you do the hard SPL thing?  Somewhere in the settings it'll tell you what firmware is on there now...

I think that'd help with knowing where you can go next.

Or just call the douche up and ask how to get it English again.

Post by: random-strike on March 05, 2010, 01:30:20 AM

this is jacked, won't connect to google when i start the phone

Press menu and go to apn settings, make sure they match tmobs

I'm assuming you got it back to english?

Also make sure they put the right plan and sim number.

Did chinaman show you it worked before selling?

yea i used it but it was full of his contacts, hunreds of them... and all his google stuff. so i wiped it clean, when it booted up it was in fuckign chinese.

right now i got the old RC on there and it doesnt' give you the option to skip the google signup process. so i can't get past it to change the apn settings

i'm tyring to flash it to rc33 (the newest version) to try and get the option to skip the google sign up and change the apn so it can connect to tmobile

Sounds overly complicated.  Ultimately, I'm glad I'd never purchase a crApple product.

I've got a G1 with cupcake.... why would I want to crack it? More apps/games/etc?
Title: Re: g1 peoples

JD why the Apple reference?

More Apple-douchebaggery is they're suing HTC for patent infringements.

RS - you're supposed to be able to set the APN settings during the google sign-in.  I'm not going to reset my phone to find out, but IIRC you could press menu while in the initial setup and it has an option for the settings.

Also 1.6 "Donut" is the newest official G1.  It has some nice improvements.

2.0 is supposedly being released for the Vodaphone's version of the G1 in Spain.  If this is true then expect either an official one from T-Mob, or xda devs.

if you have the cupcake its already "cracked"

The point of "rooting" your phone is so you can do shit like install apps to the memory card among other things...  Gives you root access.

I'm fine with the official firmwares though.  WinMo I always flashed because the official roms were always buggy/slow/crashed/etc.  Android runs well enough, although I would like to install apps to SD.

one thing i absolutely hate is that fact that you can't close apps on the android. it just leaves them open. its really annoying...

it has 6 apps open in the background until it will close the 1st one when you open a 7th.

retarded

Well it isn't necessary is their reasoning, which is true as it has really good garbage collect routines (use tracing while running the debugger in Eclipse, you'll see garbage collects a LOT).

But yeah I feel yah, stuff running in the background is extra battery being used, no matter how idle they are.

you need to download a task manager app. They allow you to close the apps you are not using individually
