Title: silicone couplers on exhaust
Post by: arsenio on March 07, 2010, 10:44:00 PM
Well? I got a deal on an Apexi N1 muffler and resonator, so I'm just gunna ditch the stock exhause with a cut out idea.

I was curious if you all think using silicone couplers, about 5 feet down stream of the turbo would be ok. I might just do the two 45 degree bends that I need, in aluminum with 3 silicone couplers holding it all together.

NO, this will not work. The exhaust is up to 1700+ degree's and rotories (i'm assuming here) run hotter egt's from my experience. Silicon is good for something like 500* or so maybe less.

It would cost less also to have an exhaust shop weld it up then using silicon couplers.

Btw, you have the worst ideas EVER.

If you don't have a welder that'll do aluminium....

Wrap it in aluminized tape several times, then slap the coupler on. I recall rmcdaniels testing his Black Satin header spray and the turbo header's surface went from 650F to 400F. It mike get a little crispy at some point, but it will still last a while.

If they can use rubber that degrades above 220F on a 2" hanger right off the cat, a 500F coupler should take your load like N/A Mike's wife does from her clients. With style, cheaply.

I was kinda wondering about this, A silicone coupler from my turbo outlet to my charge pipe is within a 1/4 inch of my exhaust mani, will that bitch melt?

Depends if you drive your car like a h-t fanboi, or really race it. but i would wrap it in some type of thermal barrier.

Mine is at about 3" of my manifold and hold the temperature well. This for about 1 year of abuse. 1/4 inch is fucking near tho!

Next time I drive my car I'll try to put a couple directly on the manifold to see what happen.

Probably melt slowly, and smell bad.  Have something handy to scrape the shit off.

it might not melt but it will get really soft and probably not seal very well

I can't decide between doing this or the 5" exhaust. Doing this might be easier..

I rape the shit out of the thing every running moment of its life. I took it for some rippers today and it seems to be doing fine. Now only if I could figure out why the the boost is surgine I could maybe make some power.
