Title: season changes= condensation
Post by: widebody93 on March 31, 2009, 06:41:49 PM
What do you guys use to keep your winter collection of raw steel parts from rusting during season changes out in the garage. Unless your fortunate to have a controlled climate shop.

Im using wd40 and 5w20 motor oil.
5w20 sprays really well out of a old windex bottle or the like.
Just dont want my gear sets rusting, rocker pads, extra valve train, or rotating parts to go bad on me.

Whats your tricks or the trade?

Move your children to the garage and put the parts inside.  They handle the condensation better.

I've coated bores with a thin coat of marine grease, did'nt see any rust issues on any of my stuff, I just got a couple of tubes of the grease and used a small paint brush to spread it on.

I like that idea. great for rocker pads.

If you heat it up does it liquify? then when cool thicken back up

We have buckets we dump diesel fuel and oil in. And dump parts in them. Keeps them from rusting. Or they make a wax-like grease shit you can apply. It's what comes on steel when you buy it. Forget what it's called.

cosmoline.

if it stops guns from rusting for 50 years, its good enough.

Excactly. Pacific NW doesn't get too humid in the summer... it's nice  ;D
especially if you are in E. WA, rains MAYBE 15-20 days a year, and it probably wouldnt even be considered rain by Seattle standards

Jeremy, I just tossed the uncleaned parts into the plastic containers.

Never a issue.

I have had issues with gears that were washed with carb cleaner and then sat in a heat garage  that got surface rust.

Then thats my issue, I clean them in a parts washer to rid of the contaminates

Thanks for the pointers and when you see BLUNDELL before friday, tell him to call Will David, he's got heard a call or text, or email from Blundell in a week
