Title: Re: so i got a 94 vx hatch.... Z6 swap 100% done BLOWN HG FTL!
Post by: turbostd on April 09, 2010, 05:24:42 AM
Well as luck would have it as i had given up the search for another civic I happened upon a slightly used (lol) 94 vx hatch on CL. The car has 200k on it and is rusted in the usual places but for $400 i couldn't pass it up. I figured i could part it out and make some money it if it was too bad to fix. Had an epic adventure going to get the thing. Guy I got the car from thought i was crazy driving a car that had been sitting for almost 2 years home instead of towing it, (turns out he was right lol)

Well I rounded up a buddy and made the hr and a half drive to Pittsburgh (i am just outside of Youngstown OH) We get lost, stuck in traffic and all in all have a crappy trip. We get there look at the car and get the guy down to $400 on it as he wanted $500. We leave to get the car transfered so i can drive it home and i leave my buddy jim there with my car and tools to try and get the vx running. Well for what ever reason we couldn't get the title done that day. My buddie calls and says the car runs but the alt belt disintegrated. Well it turns out the alt froze up from sitting so we end up having to make another trip anyhow.

Trip 2 went much better at least in the beginning. Met the guy at the local AAA, got the title done then went to change the alt on the car. Went to move it to a better spot so we could work and found out the rear wheels where stuck. Had to back up and down the drive to get them free. Fought for 2 hr trying to get the pivot bolt out and end up saying fuck it we have 2 batteries and 1 car with a good alt we will drive with out one on the vx and just stop every now and then and swap batts to keep them charged. This doesn't go so well as it is now dark and the battery isnt very good so we only make it ~5 blocks till it dies. We pull into a gas station and call AAA and get the car towed home.

The car isnt in too bad of shape but it does need a lot of work. As of now i know it needs an exhaust as it exits right after the cat. the outside needs a pass side fender and rear bumper cover. It also needs new metal welded in on the rear quarters. The inside is pretty nice but really dirty so it needs a good cleaning. Drive-train wise the d15z1 seems to run pretty good despite the high miles. It does burn a little oil it seems. (dont know how much only drove it 5 blocks) The clutch and tranny seem fine.

My plans for the car right now is to just get it road worthy so i can drive it so i can get my daily 89 std hatch fixed up. After that I plan on putting a z6 and ex trans i have down in it and starting a turbo build.

Cliffs for you lazy fucks:

Epic adventure getting a 94 vx
Dont drive without an alternator
AAA free towing ftw
Pittsburgh traffic sucks

This thread is with out pics and therefore worthless till morning when i can snap some when i start the cleaning and repair process.

Pro Tip: batteries will not run a car (especially with the lights on) for very long.  Tried before and failed, got about 2 miles.

pics?

Well heres the pics of the pile  :P The car did come with all 4 vx rims and has 2 newish tires. Also came with a sweet ass alpine cd deck :P and has the rare allays on heater haha. I forgot to take money shot pics and it started raining but under the hood its all stock VX. For now anyways hehe. I did find a place local that makes rust repair pannels so me and my dad are going to get the body fixed up over the summer. I have to fix the rear quarters on my 89 std as well. Plans now are to just get this thing drivable. If that means doing a swap (z6) now so be it.

Ya stupid rust belt   :?: all the hondas i see around here look pretty much like that. If/when you do find a clean one for sale they want a fortune for it  ::)

Ya I have heard these motors sell for good money. This one seems to run fine for having 220k on it. Hell the way I figure it i could sell the motor/trans and rims and junk the rest and still come out ahead.

We use to get 3 passes or so at the track without an alternator belt. No lights except one brake light. After that the car would need a charge.

i made it 12 miles on the highway with lights on and the car had a small riding lawnmower battery with no alt. it died exactly as i was exiting the highway and had to get flat towed the last mile to my house.

If you ever want to sell that head/im/tb combo LMK. I want to build a gas-sipping daily driver turbo for work this year.

I lucked out with my civic, 95 ex with no rust - just some dents when the previous owner kicked it when she blew the 3rd motor. Otherwise you have to pray or look down south out of state.

I scrapped 2 vx heads couple months back. I guess someone does want them.

Actually I'd rather use a HX head (roller rockers), or a y8 with a vtec-e regrind. With the tiny chaimbers, the VX head would be a pain. You'd have to mill the head or block a lot and use vitaras. Or...use the vx's oddball rods/pistons.

But yeah if you guys find a vx or hx head, I'd definately cover shipping, handling, and scrap costs. :)

VX is roller rocker too.

I got the alt changed finally. had to cut the bottom bracket in half with a grinder. Car seems to run good. It does smoke a little at higher rpm but i guess that is to be expected with 220k on it. This thing is geared really high I can do almost 70 in 2nd haha. Ill probably run it like this for a while and then slap the z6 in it. Gotta wait till Monday to get a tag for it so I can drive it more than around the block to see if it needs anything else. I also should do something about the exhaust. I was thinking of getting one of those cheepy ebay catbacks.

Well for the 0 of you that care I started on my z6 swap  O0 Started unhooking everything yesterday and today my friend Jim came over to help me out. Good times where had by all  Got some not so tasty adult beverages and went to town lol. Only casualties where a few broken bolts (damn rust) and a nice chunk of Jims finger that the grinder ate haha. Got the z6 and ex trans sitting pretty in the bay and it "runs" Just started it to see if it would fire over. Still running the vx ecu (i have the p28 just too lazy to swap it just for a test fire.) Still need to put the front mounts, shifter and axles in. Also need to put the p28 in and figure out the wiring issues. I tried to use the ex harness but no such luck lol. The vx cabin harness has an extra plug (02 and egr i assume) that has no make on the z6 one. So an hr or 2 tomorrow and i should be golden. I have turbo plans in the works as soon as the z1 sells

This swap brought to you by Steele resurve, Monster and J00se. The purple can tastes like purple rofl.

Well that didn't last long. First long trip and the fucking head gasket went on the z6  ::)  >:(  :(  Shitty part is i need to take the car and get the vins looked at (out of state car) so i can tag it as my temps expire today. I used it to take some junk in to get the money for the tags and the thing died on the way to the dmv.
