Title: Another Set of Twins
Post by: dvst8r on April 23, 2010, 10:41:47 AM
Well I don't have any of the fab pics, just a couple of the finished pics. I will get some of the fab ones from the camera man.

Cold Pipe, hot pipe and brackets were done ahead of time (obvious by the powder coat), just the down pipe and mid pipe, and charger to intercooler pipe were fabbed last night. Total install time with fab last night was about 7hrs, total beer consumed 15, and two sprites (the trucks owner doesn't drink beer just whiskey, the garage owner only has beer  :-\).

Previous setup was a single silver bullet. Aka S300 66mm compressor 71mm or 74mm turbine. Previous setup 10psi @ 2000rpm new setup 55psi @ 2000 rpm. Test drive last night was kinda useless as it was raining and even in 5th gear it was just wheel spin and peddling. It is sunny today, so hopefully the owner of the truck will have some time to do some tuning on the secondary gate, and do some proper pulls.

Current setup of this truck is:
1998 24V Dually 2wd extended cab.
12mm 913 P-pump with a quick rate cam, benched to 500cc. 5K gsk that do not go to 5k and have idling and fueling issues still. 13mm P-pump from reputable shop on order. Min setting ~650cc
O-rings and studs.
Fass lift pump.
220hp sticks
GT3782R over GT4202R with Tial V band exhaust housing.

Once this setup gets sorted it should make 750sh on #2.

I am on my way to Edmonton for the weekend, but I will get some pics of the fab (didn't take a ton as it wasn't my camera and I wasn't taking them), and try to get the owner to do a big smoky burnout on Sunday. I will definably take some in cab vids.

Well I am home, but the customer ( a millwright) is off on a plant shut down for two weeks. So no video's till then. I chatted with him for a few minutes on the phone today, and in the dry after he adjusted the top gate, he leave 4 black marks behind him in 3rd, and it buries his 60psi gauge. Once he gets back from this job, and has some cash in his pocket, he is going to order some 100psi gauges, so we can get a better idea of what is going on boost vs drive.

I will update this thread in a couple weeks when he is back.

how do you do the math for compound turbos?  i've had friends ask me that own 12 valves and i can't tell them the answer cause i have no clue what to tell them other than one big one and one little one

Sizing depends on the goals of the truck, if it is for towing, or DD, or drag, or dyno queen ect...

Badass.

it is all arbitrary. A customer comes to me and says I have this amount of money, I do this with my truck and I would like to have this much HP.

Each set is unique. I have done everything from super quick spool up towing set using the stock charger as the secondary and an S465 primary. All the way up to a 75mm secondary and a 95mm primary, and just about everything in between.

I don't have a set formula that I use, it is just based on experience. Secondary effects how soon it will light, Primary effects over all horsepower. Get them too far apart in size and they feel gapped, and the primary has a hard time lighting, get them too close together and they don't compound the boost, and you run out of pressure ratio to push the volume of air in.

Typically mass flow between chargers is 70 - 100% so if the secondary moves 50lbs/min the primary probably should fall in the 85-100lbs/min range.

Compared to some of the other mods on that truck twins are cheap.  ;)

Yes but a different setup, parallel twins for the ford. Something in a pair of 66mm's should be beauty.

Chad it was confirmed this morning, I will be at knox, electrical will be done from May 11th - 15th.
