Title: New Project. The Ferrari.
Post by: CSaddict on May 01, 2010, 08:08:00 AM
Finally the shop has their shit together so I can start this car. Its a 91 Ferrari Testarossa with a 93 512TR motor that will be twin turbo'd with a Motec running the show. This is will be a slow build since they only pay me here and there and Im in no rush. Ill get pics of the car. Its nothing special. Not in great shape.

Im making 4  3 into 1 V-banded headers. Flanges and laser cut collectors came from Brad@Brewspeed. Top notch work and really reasonable prices. Stainless is from www.acestainless.com (http://)

Pics are grainy since they are taken on my Crackberry.
Victim.

That sound about right for that motor if in low mileage.

Very interesting project.  :noel:

Hows the drivetrain hold up in those? I see cars liek the lambo's getting turbo'd and i have to think either there playing with fire with the drivtrain or there build like the old supra shit. Tough as hell.

he paid 41K for that motor? i wonder how hes gonna feel if mike blows it up tuning it. i would guess theyre pretty bullet proof if they cost that kind of money after 17 years

I believe the cost for Ferrari to make a new one. The have every tool needed to recast another block, head, crank, etc.

The just assign a new serial number on the block as though it was part a continuation of that series of engine.

Watched a show on the Ferrari factory. The have a large area where the restore customers cars to new condition from the ground up.

It better be something along the lines of a divided-turbine S4xx or something. If they're something gay like S-trim T4's, tell them you're switching to fluxcore to match the weaksauce turbos.

I recall seeing John Carmack in some automag showing the Ferrari's he owns. 1 or 2 of them were turbocharged at the time, and I know at least 1 was driven a lot. So they aren't exactly weak like an NSX drivetrain...

This seems to be more cosmetic than anything else. 2 T4's would suck on that 5.0l

41K for a used motor?   There was a 91 testaroossa on CL this week that needed a service (15K) for $42 Grand.

not questioning the work , or idea, just the mentality.

Well per wiki the 91 testarossa had 380hp/361ft. lbs. and the 512tr has 428hp/362ft.lbs.

The guys doesnt seem to care about money. They told him about $30k for the turbo kit. Just the turbo kit. He dropped off $20k to get started.

He wants to drop off his Lotus next for exhaust.

Gonna need to bank the pipe around. I wanted them side by side originally but there is no room and assembly and disassembly would be difficult.

This is one of the headers the guy bought. He got 4 of these beauties for the bargain price of $6,000!!!!  Notice the crush bent lovin and the spot where they burnt through with the mig and patched. Not to mention they aren't even close to being useable. They dont even fit in the car. One hits the tranny and the other hits the frame.  Not bad for $6k.

I'm broke, learning from people that have money is a bad thing? I don't know about you, but if I can find a legal and morally right way to become wealthy then I will. I would like to have the money and time to do the shit I want to do rather than making the man rich 40+ hours a week.

What company made those piles of shit? do tell.

Also any reason why your using pipe over tubing for this app? I would assume the tubing would look a bit nicer and well they would be lighter also. Even some 14g would be resonably strong and lighter then pipe?

I assume it's because your doing what your told per say, but i had to ask.

Actually we agreed on $2k for just the labor. They supply everything including argon and filler rod. I just show up with my welder.

The turbo kit will be another $3k for just labor. They pretty much just let me charge them whatever I feel is fair.

At the peak the Honda world was a huge money maker well beyond what most will belief. It was not uncommon for people I knew to do 50,000+ in sales per month with 2 full time employees. Thats alot of fuckin money. Enough for them to buy very fancy german cars and nice homes overlooking san francisco.
