Title: So what the fuckis with my LS??
Post by: ratcityrex on May 06, 2010, 02:35:01 PM
SO Ive had this scraping sound (plastic on plastic sound) coming from what I thought was my dizzy. So I got a brond new oem one. Still the same sound. Then I got a new cap and rotor, still the same sound. Started the car up and it ran fine. So I pulled my vc, and check my lash. It was a little loose. .008in .009ex I didnt think about it at the time but im running delta 272/260 and I didnt check with delta to see what the lash was supposed to be at.

So I took it down to .005in and .006ex At the same time I replaced my 2 -10 lines from my vc to my snatch can, and capped my black box off, I did just have a line running off of it pointing into a mt dew bottle.

Get all done and go to start the car up. It idles like ass. Crazy vacuum like bouncing from 2-8in very fast. So i get fed up with it for the night and call it a night. Called delta this morning and they said to run it at .006in .008ex

Im gona go home at lunch today and switch back to my old cap and rotor, just to rule that out.

But I guess what I want to know is will going from .008 to .005in, and .009 to .006ex my valve lash make my car idle like ass?

Id think it might make a LIL bit of a difference, assuming that the valves are open a cunt longer, and effectively youd see a bit more duration... negligable, but you would.

I vote valve lash too tight.

well changes the cap and rotor, no diff in idle. But when its warm it will idle at 12in

I do my valve lash 2-3 times in a row.  Even when I think it's right, for some reason when I go back 1-2 of them are wrong.

I think 1-2 of yours are wrong.

FYI on valve adjustment:

I always go with the feeler that's one step larger and get them almost tight. Then when I bolt it down and re-test, they're right in spec. My test is to make sure the smaller feeler has no drag, the larger feeler won't even fit, and the correct feeler will slide in with some drag. I think it's because the thicker/tighter feeler compensates for the nut not being tight, accounting for the miniscule stretch one it gets tight. Whatever it is, it works. I only have to re-do 1 or 2 at most for any motor now, not just Hondas.

Feeling for "drag" when the nut isn't locked is very hard to do. THe drag will change if the feeler is not perfectly perpendicular to the valve.

Yeah, the locknuts make the whole thing annoying.  I always adjust so the smaller spec will fit but not the larger.  If it's a non-vtec B, I'll use a screwdriver to hold the adjusting nut while I use a wrench to tighten the lock nut.  If it's a vtec B where I can't fit a wrench I hand tighten as much as possible while holding the adjusting screw, then tighten.

If clearance is too tight when lock nut is tightened, I'll break the locknut loose, hand tighten, hold still and turn the adjuster back a little...usually can get it right on the second if not first time.

It's almost enough to make me want a tappet wrench or whatever it's called but meh.

So, is it fixed?
