Title: vitara FJT r spec rod wrist pin binding
Post by: speedjunky01 on May 11, 2010, 05:33:39 PM
it swings fine in one direction but will not budge in the other any ideas as to WTF would be causing the binding issue with the rod?

figures it has to be #4 too so i can almost see the build done WTF

You may just need some lubricant in the pin area to get worked in.

I had a similar issue with Eagle rods and vitaras so just squirt some light oil in there it will free up. ;D

Run a brake cylinder hone through it a couple times. This was common practice with the early version TT rods

word about the hone. Literally a couple passes clean and try. It should only take a couple times.

Hone, end thread. Most rod sets I've bought have at least one rod that needs a slight hone. Don't overdo it.

so i need to get the pin pressed out? WTF :(

lube is the first thing i tried no go with it

no push it out the side it wants to come out

go to local tool store not nazi corporate america stores and get a brake hone should run about 20 bucks for the size you need with stones

Use plenty of lube on the stones. Make a couple passes try again. Repeat until smooth

Look at racityrex build thread he had to do the same thing

I did it on my spare set of TT rods/SRPs. They required a bit more than a few passes, but they turned out mint.

I got my hone from Oreily's for like $10

ok the ultimate WTF moment, i take the rod/pin/piston apart, put the rod on the pin its moves spins fina all around the rod both ways ZERO problems

im like ok...... clean it all with hot water, rinse with hot, dry it off with the air hose, lube it up put it all together same order as last time and now it binds again

WTF

Sounds like pin is bent, binding between piston and rod small end bush.

BTW if Spec R is code for the long rods, I'd sell and buy standard length.

for some reason the small end is touching the piston WTF FJT

I had a set of 75.5mm vitaras NEW with new pins

the new piston before the rod went on

after the rod went on

you can see scuff marks all over the piston

the old 75mm piston has even more scuffs

Welcome to the aftermarket, sir.  This is the LEAST of the problems you'll run into.

i just dont get how all others work perfectly fine but not this one

also JD this is the spec for the FJ R

5.394"C.C., .898" B.E.width, 1.890" B.E. bore, 1.771" Crank Pin,
0.7483" wrist pin (19mm).

137mm/25.4=5.934

i had the first run off of the I beams long rods.  they went together fine.  i know crxvtec91 had the same problem and had to grind away as well.

not sure why theyre like that.  pm fj.

when i had like 3 sets of rods chillin, 1 set had the pistons grinded.

yeah good point chris

think just having one weigh a tad less will effect the motor a lot? or should i just pull them all and grind it equally so they weight the same on my "jewelers" scale?  :noel:

I already have 3 in and tqed properly the 3 times and loosen then 4th time is the final with 43ftlbs with ARP lube

I wouldnt worry about the gram or 2 of difference in weight. Considering people have engines with cracked pullies/chipped flywheels that last forever its not worth going crazy over imo.

Also Ill bank they already are all a different weight already refer again to chinesse machine work. Its nothing to go crazy about since so many people have had success with this setup.

Yup same problem with mine. Just grind the hump on the piston down. Thats what I ended up doing. Look at my build thread I think I have pic's in there of it.

staight from FJT

Danijel.

By your pictures i would say that you are using the H Beam rods?

This is an issue that only happens with the H beams.. WHen you use the H
beam rods you have to grind off a little that part of the piston so that
the rod does not makes contact. This does not compromises the strength of
the piston...

With the D16 I beams this issue does not exist  because the rod was
designed to be used exclusielly with the vitara piston

Thanks.
Francisco

i just ground it down and the end result
