Title: Which valves to use for deez?
Post by: jabberwock on June 25, 2010, 12:10:32 PM
Same shit as the LS thread.  JD, in your research what have you found out as far as D valves go?  Anything larger swappable that's OEM?

Rule of thumb is anything bigger than 0.5mm oversized needs a new seat.  For a D, I'd go bigger with the intakes and let the exhaust figure it's own way out of the chamber.

I'd do the opposite.

Going bigger on the intake side just means the outer edge is shrouded by the cylinder wall more.

Couldn't you just cut a little on the top cylinder to help with flow?

Sort of like what they do for SBC or SBF when they are using 2.02 or 2.06" intake valves on a small than 4.00 bore. :-\

steel block vs thin steel liners. Now if the block is sleeved out to 78/79 mm, then 1mm over on the valves is useful.

Yes, but on which head, Bone?  There are two different valve spacings in the proper D-series families.

More info on this valve spacing please.  ;D

Have you never looked at an A6/B1/B2//B head compared to a Z1/Z6/Y5/Y7/Y8 head?

The valve spacing difference is quite apparent.

I look at the B7 an B8 heads but I figured the valve spacing would be the same if you use z6 valves and seats. :-\

Never really dove into the spacing and shrouding issue.

Maybe I will look at this more. ;D

Valve spacing is not a characteristic determined by the the valves and seats, but rather the casting itself.

I usually look at the valve edge to edge spacing, and the valve edge to cylinder wall issue. I have had no need to look at the valve center to valve center, until now.

Bump because, while neither Russ nor I give a shit, Staley Dan is whining about this to me basically all the goddamn time.

FYI F22/F23 intakes are 34mm, but 2.5mm short.

I see what he is saying.

ENGINE CODE   V-TEC   D16Y8 V-TEC
INTAKE                PV4370HP-C      1.22 X 5.5MM X 4.66 X 1G
EXHAUST   PV4372HP-C   1.06 X 5.5MM X 4.56 X 1G

ENGINE CODE   F-23A   A4-A5-A7-VTEC
INTAKE               PV4573               1.33 X 5.5 M X 4.56 X 1G
INTAKE      P4378HP-C   1.37 X 5.5MM X 4.56 X 1G

Not worried yet  ;D

I may still have another cheaper route.  ;D

well played sir

Subaru valves are longer, slightly thicker, and 32mm.  Make it happen.

I was find those to be too thick.

How thick?  Guide sizes can be manipulated, although it gets to be pricey.

What is the installed height on D16 springs?  Diameter where retainer sits?

Give me some dimensions.  Dumbestic valvetrain parts are listed by dimension.

D16=>5.5mm

Subaru=>8.0mm  I only have listings of 76 to 05 and not all of the EJ family.  :-\

VOLKSWAGON   86-92         2109CC

INTAKE      P3467   1.57 X 8MM X 4.81 X 3G <--- too many grooves and too big of valves
EXHAUST   P3466   1.33 X 9MM X 4.83 X 3G <--- too many grooves and too big of valves

PONTIAC   77-80          151 CC (ironduke w/ non- crossflow heads)

IN  79-80   P3063   1.72 X 11/32 X 4.66 X 2G <--- too many grooves and too big of valves but usually super cheap.
EX  79-80   P3367   1.50 X 11/32 X 4.62 X 2G <--- too many grooves and too big of valves but usually super cheap.

OLDSMOBILE   75-82          260 C.I.

EXHAUST   P2946   1.30 X 11/32 X 4.68 X 1G  <-- a little too big

OLDSMOBILE   80-90         307 C.I.

INTAKE      P3205   1.75 X 11/32 X 4.66 X 1G
EXHAUST   P2993   1.50 X 11/32 X 4.68 X 1G

There is a lot Olds engines that have the right length valves and single groove on the stems.
The stem dia. are around 8 to 9mm and have 1.5" to 2.0" heads.
Which would not fit very well in 4-valve D-series heads.

NISSAN   82-83         1488CC

INTAKE     P3279   1.45 X 7MM X 4.67 X 1G <-- Possibly a good candidate if you modify valve guides
EXHAUST   P3278   1.18 X 7MM X 4.64 X 1G <-- Possibly a good candidate if you modify valve guides

NISSAN   83-84         1488CC Turbo

INTAKE     P3280   1.45 X 7MM X 4.70 X 1G <-- Possibly a good candidate if you modify valve guides
EXHAUST   P3297   1.22 X 7MM X 4.71 X 1G <-- Possibly a good candidate if you modify valve guides

MAZDA   94-04           2994 CC Ford Built

INTAKE  94-99   P3485   1.66 X 8MM X 4.610 X 3G <-- a little short and the head are a bit big.
INTAKE  00-04   PV4598   1.66 X 7MM X 4.630 X 3G <-- a little short and the head are a bit big.
EXHAUST 00-04   PV4599   1.37 X 7MM X 4.610 X 3G <-- a little tall and the head are a bit big.
EXHAUST 94-99   P3484   1.37 X 8MM X 4.610 X 3G <-- a little tall and the head are a bit big.

GM   85-88           1.0 L Sprint

INTAKE     P3808   1.41 X 7MM X 4.55 X 1G <-- a little short and the head are a bit big.
EXHAUST   P3807   1.18 X 7MM X 4.51 X 1G <-- a little tall but a possible candidate

GM   83-86          2.0L Brazillian built (Opel)

INTAKE     P3175   1.60 X 8MM X 4.70 X 1G<-- Possibly a good candidate if you modify valve guides
EXHAUST   P3174   1.37 X 8MM X 4.72 X 1G<-- Possibly a good candidate if you modify valve guides

I have no spring install height ATM but I can dig up some later. ;D

You know, the idea I had about machining down F22/F23 valves that Staley Dan stole from me before I came up with it might be the way to fly.  If you pay close attention to coil bind vs cam lift vs seat pressure, or hell knock a tenth out of the spring seat on the top of the head, it makes a lot of sense.

You may all thank me now, starting with Staleard.

How does this address the 2.54mm shortness in respect of the rocker to valve geometry?  :-\

Or homemade lash screws.  Stick longer lash screw in the same vice drill valve grinder and grind it roundish and smooth.

I may at some point in order to make the point that free (or cheap) is a quality overcoming many faults, which was the original premise of hotrodding back when Men made their own shit and there was no Summit catalog.

Right now, $13 os so per valve is damn attractive.
