First Start & Run of EdwardSquirt!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvJgyuzoako#normal)
oi!
-
What is the back story on this? ;D
-
Fred, author of FreeEMS which came about as a protest to how MS takes IP rights on anything you do with their boxes, was flown back into America for two months to design a closed source EMS.
Classic.
-
That should fit into a lunchbox just fine, lol its gnarly
-
i like the john edwerds style scream in the middle of the vid.
-
im really tired of all the "megasquirt should belong to everyoneeee" or "this authorized reseller bullshit wont let me stand out from the compition !"
most of those people are ignorant fucking programers who have never had to deal with a physical product ever. sure its easy enough to write software and then distribute it for no money. but whut about the kit makers, they have to doll out some serious cash for something they dont even have a right to produce unless authorized. let alone the fact that without exclusive rights and authorized resellers there would be no market, no sales figures, and no way to convince parts suplyers to produce X number of componets even if you paid them up front, this is the biggest reason that MS is still made mostly from generic parts. and never mind the fact that without authorized resellers, kit builders would be asking a bank to finance a production run of a system that they do not own in any way.
the way things are done now is hardly perfect, but i dont think anybody is getting rich off it, and personaly i dont even think that bruce really wants to own any of this stuff, either. but there are still people who cant step into reality for one second and see it for what it is, a better way to buy parts and make ECUs.
-
Well, you haven't met Fred.
-
+1. Fred is a good dude.

+1. Fred is a good dude.
qft
-
im not saying any of these people are even wrong, im just sick of hearing about it, everyone knows its not prefect.
-
And Fred is trying to make it perfect. He's not bitching, he's actually doing something about it. Not like you can bitch about it when you've been banned from every MS related forum, so what's your gripe about him?
-
Read, then post.
http://www.diyefi.org/why.htm (http://www.diyefi.org/why.htm)
-
im not complaining about fred here, im complaning about everyone who is just winning about it without looking at both sides of the problem. i have never met or talked to fred ever and im not atacking him here. im glad he decided to do somthing about it. myself and i think pretty much everyone wishes megasquirt had a GPL but the world just dosnt work that way. i know they banned fred from most the of the forums, so why dont they ban the rest of losers who complain constantly about somthing thats never going to change.
-
Exactly. Fred is a winner and not a whiner. So why'd they ban him again?
-
compition >> competition
programers >> programmers
whut >> what
suplyers >> suppliers
componets >> components
complaning >> complaining
winning >> whining
atacking >> attacking
somthing >> something
FUCK that was hard to read!
I *did* get a couple of good rofls out of it, though :-)
most of those people are ignorant fucking programers who have never had to deal with a physical product ever.
Do you realise how ignorant you look when you say that? Especially with the spelling of programmer wrong!
sure its easy enough to write software and then distribute it for no money.
Yeah, sure it is, really easy. That's why good developers are a dime a dozen, right? Get fucked, good software takes skill, talent and experience to write. There is nothing easy about it.
but whut about the kit makers, they have to doll out some serious cash for something they dont even have a right to produce unless authorized.
Que?
let alone the fact that without exclusive rights and authorized resellers there would be no market, no sales figures, and no way to convince parts suplyers to produce X number of componets even if you paid them up front
Que?
this is the biggest reason that MS is still made mostly from generic parts.
Bollocks, simple designs are FTW. Only deviate to special purpose shit if and when you need to. For example, VR input conditioning, rolling your own as MS does on the v3 is gay. There is a readily available chip (actually, more than one now) to do this for cheap.
and never mind the fact that without authorized resellers, kit builders would be asking a bank to finance a production run of a system that they do not own in any way.
This one makes sense, but actually, not really, why would you ask a bank for a couple of K? And if you did need it bankrolled, your FOSS based business plan would convince the bank quite nicely.
the way things are done now is hardly perfect, but i dont think anybody is getting rich off it
Think again. Jerry runs DIYAutoTune.com and has about 10 employees, there. Even on minimum wage they must be making a fair bit of money to support that. Plus, he gets FUCK ALL margin from B&G who are making the real killing. PCBs are cheap as fuck, ordering a batch with a few components isn't expensive either. Goooood margin there for B&G, and still some margin left over for Jerry (who, btw, is a really good dude, and a dude that has taken a FreeEMS powered ride!)
but there are still people who cant step into reality for one second and see it for what it is, a better way to buy parts and make ECUs.
Debatable! Besides, which of the many ways that MS products are arranged and distributed do you mean? MS3 is closed source and has self destruct shit built into it such that if you send the wrong stuff over serial you brick it! Fuck that!
i think pretty much everyone wishes megasquirt had a GPL but the world just dosnt work that way.
Sure it does! Just look at Linux, where it's used, by how many major corporations, for virtually everything, and anything. Almost every wifi router runs linux firmware, for example. And you tell me that it doesn't work. As the RHMT guys would say, go die in a fire :-)
In summary, go nock yourself out!
Fred.

Zing!
-
This is what I love about Fred, he is a true enthusiast of efi and interesting to talk to. Now if only my couch didn't smell like spanish wine.
-
Fred. FUCK YEAH!
-
mabye i havent explained my self very well. my original post was just my bitching about people (a rather small number of MS users) who complain about MS licensing without fully understanding why. and then write 20-30 pages of debate on somthing that BG will never change, and then continue to use it anyway. none of these people are fred or are anything like him.
the only point i was trying to make is that open source hardware is alot harder to distribute then open source software.
sorry if i have offended you fred
-
That's nice, but this thread isn't about that. If you wish to make a thread on that topic, however, please do so.
-
Nah, not offended, except by your spelling ;-)
However, I think not enough MS users whinge :-) If you start that other thread, I can have a crack at saying why. Or not. I'm in Spain, with the most sexy woman I've ever laid hands on, so spending time on that, now, isn't a high priority.
Fred.
-
FUCK FREAD!
J/k good work buddy.
-
Id like to give Fred a fuckung haircut, god damn hippie
-
I'm in Spain, with the most sexy woman I've ever laid hands on,

Mustn't have happened, then, because the chances of me putting pics of her, on here, are slim to none, and slim was just shot with 45.
