Title: How much can you live off of?
Post by: BoostedSchemes on July 26, 2010, 02:53:07 PM
Realistic. No fucking around, no acting like a hot shot, just ow much money do you need to pay your rent, insurance, etc, and be able to eat. I'm not talking barely scraping by, but im not including cost of a week in cancun and a 42" TV.

Don't post your salary - post where you live, living arrangement,  and how much it costs you to live there. Level of detail is up to you. I think this can be a pretty useful archive since we have members all over the country and it would be nice for our journeyman heroes like hotrex to know where to spread their appleseed next.

Trying to get a feel for places I may relocate to, I only know NYC salaries vs cost of living and all the online calculators are full of shit. I want to try living somewhere else soooo....

My experience - includes all expenses neccesary, along with commuting costs etc.

State College PA - living alone in apt =  ~15,000 a year
State College PA - living with 3 roommates in townhouse = ~6,000 a year
Brooklyn, NY - living alone in apt = 15-22,000 a year

Bills: $90 cellphone + $300 rent + < 100$ utilities/cable/internet + $100 car payment + 70$ car insurance = ~ 660/mo. I can live comfortably on $1000/mo income.

$200 / month cell (two people one plan) + 1200 / month mortgage + $200 / month insurance (car, house, bikes, sleds ect...) + $200 month fuel + 200 month food (might be a little low there) + $50 month for dogs + $100 for clothes or repairs or something else I am forgetting... ~$2150/mo So I can live comfortably on $2500/mo

This is for Calgary AB, Canada (I know, I know Canada doesn't count) I live in an old 1200sq ft house with a decent sized garage, and not in the hood, but not in a baller area either. Median income for the area is $87K.

EDIT: Forgot Gas, electricity, home phone, internet, taxes, water and sewer. So really I am more like $2500/mo live comfortably on $3000/mo

Should be interesting...

Hazel Green, AL

$400 - 3br/2ba duplex rental
$100 - phone bill
$75 - internet bill
$100 - insurance
$125 - electricity/water
$125 - gas (about $600 a tank, every few months, FUCK GAS)
$50 - server
$150 - gas  (for car)
$150 - cigs
$60 - dog food
$200 - my groceries
$160 - lunch
--------------
$1690/mo

Need around $2000/mo to live comfortable-ish.  Make not too much more than that.  Always in the pursuit of mo' money.

Living at home under $10k after taxes and job expenses.

Car Ins $100 a month
Cell $45 a month
Storage unit $145 a month

About $500-550 a month, but just had to take a $40 a week pay cut as the contract I work was underbid by new company.

$1200/month mortgage
$250 insurance(3 cars, 2 with full coverage)
$150 celly for me and the wife
$200 random bills(elec/water/etc.)
$30 for 7meg internet
$200 car payment
$400 gas and food

I can make it on about $2500-$3k a month with extra spending cash. Probably cheaper if I wanted to be absolutely bare bones. Used to rent a 2br house for $650

Eastern Washington state

$250 - rent with 2 others in 3bdr apt (when i wasn't living at home as i am lately)
$300 - food
$100 - gas
$25 - cable/internet (split 3 ways)
$15-20 - utilities (2 way split)

That's roughly $800 and it would very depending on how much i drove. If i didn't buy expensive car parts i would have been able to live fine on a next to nothing job ($10/hr)

Rent - 1 bedroom  $1015
Car insurance 0 SiR  - $200 a mo
Cell and Intraweb - $220 ish

I commute to work and drive home on weekends , so 1000 km per week , 2 tanks of gas or about $80 @ today's prices a Week in gas

i dont think mine counts very much since i live with my parents currently but:

Pensacola, FL

Car payment - 200
Car insurance (2 cars) - 100
cell phone - 100
entertainment - 200
best buy payments - 200
------------------------------

total - 800 a month

if it wasnt for building my pos prelude, i would be living very comfortably but im not looking to stay at my parents house much longer.  I make about 1500 a month not counting the random tunes i do.  looking forward to getting out of the "shop business" and into law enforcement while still maintaining tuning on the side.  Fuck turning wrenches for little pay and no benefits.

I'm near Jacksonville FL

my lifestyle needs a household income of about $3500 a month to be sort of comfortable, but not having much money to play with. that includes

mortgage on 2 acres, 2500sqft house, 3600sqft of shop space
2 iphones
middle of the road cable/internet package
1 honda fit payment, 2 cars insured
1 dog, 2 cats
eating out for lunch almost every day

+1 on getting away from making a living with your hands. i am working on finding something less physical and in a climate controlled building

utilities - 70 i pay for electric.
gas and food averages me about 400 a month

total = $1280. i make about 1600 after taxes a month so i do okay. although i'd live comfortably if i made $2000 after taxes or about 2500 a month. so good comfortable job at $15.60 an hour would do me good. right now im about 13.25 ish depending on my commsion.

Bozeman MT.

~480 rent + utilities
80 phone bill
eat when i can~200
~100 ins on car 2 trucks and bike

800~1000 a month but its really hard to find a job that pays $10+

you can kill for food/people, so if you really wanted you could erase the grocery bill.

could also build a house in the winter out of the snow then camp all summer long in a tent.

its mt.  lewis and clark did that shit

i work every hour of the week except for the 34 i'm required to take off (literally 4 hrs of sleep a night) and rarely bring in more than a 1K after taxes every two weeks.

and i have bills up the ying yang cuz of school, but i still have money to buy hondas

I live in the Fox Cities area, Northeastern WI, its like 30 mins SW of Green Bay.

I live in a pretty nice ass house, share with 1 other person-$250/mo (I pay a little more in the winter but still under $300)
phone bill $80/mo
Car Ins $140/mo (2 cars and a motorcycle, and I have a pretty bad record)
Food $150-$200/mo
xbox live-$7/mo

about $720/mo plus random shit probably $1,000/mo. Not to bad, I pull in close to $1k a week, jobs here are plentifull as long as you are a hard worker. Some people pay $500-$700 for rent but they are getting hosed, in this area you could buy a pretty nice house for that.

wtf?

I did something similar except maybe less sleeps when I worked two full-time jobs and was a full-time college student...  Shit sucked and I felt like a zombie or mindless drone every day.  Had trouble keeping up with what day/week/month it was since a "day" could span a bit more time than a day.

Bright side, when I quit one of the jobs, I had plenty of cash to blow since I never had time to spend it.

I wouldn't kill myself like that for 1k every two weeks.

Really that hard to find something paying at least $10/hr?

2500/mo rent+ 250/mo car note+ 300 utilities+ 600 food+ 100/mo insurance= 3750mo, we can comfortably live on 4200mo. Rent is expensive because I rent a house in Montgomery county, glad we are moving soon and I can start buying a home instead of throwing away all my money on rent.

You spend $1500/month on food?!?  :o

I wanna say he has 4 kids

Yeap, and when they are home in the summer (no school) my food bill goes way up along w/ electricity bill.

My wife and have 3 jobs combined, lately we have been keeping up and enjoying more. ;D

Russ, $1500 is a bit excessive.  Children are small and do not need to eat as often, maybe one meal every other day.

Yeah but when they are bored they eat. And if my wife and I are working at the same time then food gets consumed.

Also keep in mind the $1500 includes household cleaning supplies, pet food, other pet stuff, toiletries, and anything needed for the house.

And that is avg. over all.

During the school year I still pay for my kids' school lunches and breakfasts.  :?:

I hope you shop at Sam's Club/Costco/something similar...  I grab anything that won't expire there.

Broke is a condition, poor is a mindset.

i work every hour of the week except for the 34 i'm required to take off (literally 4 hrs of sleep a night) and rarely bring in more than a 1K after taxes every two weeks
You're getting fucked.

I wouldn't even get out of bed for $1k every two weeks.

Hope you never lose your job and end up to good for the $1000/2wks job. That way you can lose everything you own but you won't have to stoop that low.  :?:

I am lucky to be at a job for more then 6months at a time, I had a business fail 2 years ago and put me in debt over $300K. Broke is a condition, poor is a mindset.

Oh that and minimum wage here is nearly $10/hr iirc  :P

I was hoping i took what you said wrong. I have just personally seen to many people lose everything because there refused to work a "shit" job while looking for work or w/e.

I have a Sam's club membership but I do not use it much. I hate driving on the Eastside of Casper.

We shop almost exclusively at Wal-Mart b/c my wife works there. :-\

I remember being broke enough to not even be able to buy cheap groceries, like oatmeal. Couch surfing, riding a bike and living off a few hundred bucks a month or less. Now I'm north of 5 figures a month ???

The most ironic part to me of the above, is when it was a few hundred a month you lived on your own, and now that it is expensive you, well, sleep at home, I think you live in the shop...  :P

I sold most of my valuable shit to keep food in my stomach when I was unemployed for a half year.

One member was the proud recipient of a 24" LCD monitor, another an XD45, and another a PC.  Not to mention the countless car parts I was finally motivated to sell.

Haha didn't know I sold you one.  I was referring to the one Doug picked up a few months back.  Miss the LG deals...that monitor was $120 (paid the friend $150 for the trouble) back when they were a lot pricier, my new ones were $230 each :(

I have a couple with cracked bezels and such.  I had 5 monitors in the back of the last CRX when I nailed a dump truck at a decent speed.  Got it back from the salvage place and the monitors were all in the back.  A couple were fine, the other 3 had cracked/broken bezels and stands.  4/5 work which is better than I expected.

Pan Handle of Florida

My place with 2 roomies with me costs about 13-1400 a month (Rent, utilities, tv/internet).  So 400+ range per person depending on season.  The electricity bill is the big mover of what the utilities sit at.

so for simplicity its 450 to live in that place, 70 for car insurance, 80 phone bill.  So its about 600 a month for that basic shi to cover my ass.  After that is gas (honda crx so 40 in a month tops sicne I baby it) Then 200 for groceries (or maybe 300 but that seems a bit high for just me)

Looking at $800-900 To survive just for myself.  Fairly expensive for a basic setup cause when you toss in extra stuff and fun im always broke

So it looks like 90% of rHMT'ers could survive on like 12$/hour
30k pretax = 14.30/hour
50k pretax = 24.00/hr

This thread had me fairly intrigued so I added up all my bills and it came out to just over $55k/year.  Which includes 3 bd 1ba 2200 sq ft house in Bremerton, WA (ferry ride to seattle) couple small credit cards, car payment for my wife and I, my bike payment, utilities like cell phones, cable, electric, ect, day care and school loans for my wife and I.  This doesn't include gas, food, diapers, ect.

So not only am I pissed off about spending what looks like 2 times the average person in monthly bills, I am very curious where the other $40k/year is going and why I feel like I have no money?

los angeles.

i could find a spot for about 600, single. cell is 100, gas a month is about 160, insurance for 2 cars would be 65.  food? i could probably live off 200 bucks a month, so thats: 1125.  i make about 1200-1400 a month. and i know i waste a shit load more on booze and retarded shit...so i guess i cant live on my own just quite, lol. or i could struggle it out.

folks remember the expense figures are post tax, the salary you get is pretax. To survive with 30k in expenses, your salary is going to need to be 40k+

Obama needs to bankroll his mixtapes somehow niggas

Ah, child support.  The carefree days of having money.

Wait until babymomma runs off and doesn't pay you a dime while you raise the kid.  Like Russ said, kids eat when they get bored.  I feel like I pay bills or feed the kid, and nothing else.
