I've never even heard of tipping a tow truck driver.

I've never been happy about paying $70 to have my car moved a few miles.  I'm sure the insurance is cheap and it isn't as much of a profit as it would seem, but I'm entirely satisfied with borrowing a truck and renting a $30 car dolly.

it's a catch 22 for most tow companies. while it isn't as much as a regular tow, it is SOMETHING to keep the trucks busy. drivers on commission are the ones who get fucked. i did 3ish years of aaa/cross country/geico towing, although geico paid pretty well.

Any monkey could do the job tow drivers do...its just whether they can do it efficiently w/o fucking your low ass car up loading it on the flatbed/wheel lift, thats where the tip comes in.  You wouldn't believe how many people say "Wow, that was amazing" the way you do it, especially when you watch some mexican rip front bumpers off trying to do the same shit.

Gotta be honest.  that is a shitty attitude.

Your job is to tow whatever your company says.  and they pay you.  If you need more money then, find another job that pays better or one in addition to the one you have.  I fail to see why i should pay you extra to do your job.  I don't know you from Adam but based off what you said it further enforces my theory that most tow truck companies are shady and hire shady ass people.  this whole tipping people that aren't servers bullshit is confusing.  point blank you are paid a wage for your job.  you should not need anything extra "to do a better job" that's bullshit and means you don't take too much pride in your work in the first place or work often with a halfassed montra IMO.  I turn out the best work i can regardless if im adding a new printer to moms Computer or if im fixing the mayors pc. on the clock or off my work is top notch regardless if you're paying or not.

If your wage isn't half what it should be to compensate for tips, like a server or something similar why should i reward you extra for something you are already getting compensated for.

No one gave me a 20 for showing up today or not breaking shit.  You're a tow truck driver, it should be expected you have a brain and can tow my shit without destroying it, no idea why i should give you a reward for doing your job successfully.

No offense to anyone here but if you don't do it you wouldn't understand. You have to put up with shit that you wouldn't have to deal with fixing a fax machine and shit like that. And as stated before most motor clubs pay shit and AAA is even worse.

Get a new job then. I don't consider it customary to tip tow truck drivers.

when I had a broken left knuckle, flatbed driver placed the car in the garage, I didn't even have to roll it forward to close the garage door, he got a $20.

This.

When I'm getting tipped for fixing morons' computers, maybe I'll start tipping people that already earn a "full" wage.  I work for my pay, you work for your pay.  I provide a service, and you provide a service.  The only difference is that I don't expect a tip for doing what I was hired for.  Why should I give more of my money simply because...you want it?

You have to put up with shit that you wouldn't have to deal with fixing a fax machine and shit like that.

So?

Doctors have to deal with shit that you wouldn't have to deal with pulling a totaled car out of a ditch.  They don't get tipped.

If you don't like the job or don't feel like you're getting proper compensation, then simply do something else.

In a way, I agree with the not tipping people that aren't servers. With that said, I pay $75 a year to AAA, so I get 3 tows at $25 a piece. I have no problem adding $10-20 at the time of service. That makes it $35-45 each for a 100 mile tow.

Going beyond your scope of work and getting a tip is much different than doing your job and expecting one.

I just don't like the "I get paid a full wage like anyone else but expect a tip or else I'll treat you like shit next time because my company decided to accept AAA tows" mentality.

The garage deal is a perfect example...we're not required to drop it in your driveway or garage, but its the little things like that, that give us tow drivers reason to say "sure, i can place it perfectly straight in your garage" instead of "push it from the street in your garage."  I understand what you guys are saying about paying for a service, but just think, your $75 bucks a year gets you 3 tows, and somethin like 5 service calls (jumpstart, lockout, flat tire, misc...)

W/O AAA that would be $65/tow, and $45/service call, that comes to $420.   I $5 tip here and there won't kill you.

Thank you fysh...

Depends on the company...i worked two years on the clock for ~60 hours, then the rest was commission.

For the last year I've been straight commission, 25% of the call.  AAA pays us the same to spend 30 seconds to unlock a car as they do to tow an AWD Jeep and have to throw dollies.   25% of 25 dollars...almost 7 dollars.

Awesome.

I got tips all the time in the 3 years I towed, but that's because I knew what the fuck I was doing and made customers wet. Wasn't ever expecting it but it was nice when it happened.

I really enjoyed towing but it's definitely not for everyone.  Also, niggers never tip.

Whatever a company gets for doing AAA shit has nothing to do with the people who do the job. You took the job, knowing what it pays, and that's that. A tip isn't something anyone should get, outside of crazy cool service, but now certain industries expect it.

On the flipside, the last tow truck driver I dealt with did back wifemodes car in the garage, and it was Thanksgiving, so I didn't feel bad about tipping him. On a regular day, with a regular service, the best guy in the world can get fucked with the simple "thanks" I extend.

People bring you a simple pizza, walk you over a drink, and fucken demand a tip. Fucken tow drivers want a tip, and I've been painting peoples' biggest investment for years. Whether I hate you, or treat you like a king, it's super mad rare (every 2 years?) that I get a tip, and I'm surprised when they do. Just saying, our tipping priorities are all fucked anyway.

i just ordered a pizza from dominoes, and during the order the guy asked if i wanted to include the tip on the credit card.
wtf? you want me to tip the driver and i dont even know if my pizza is going to be flipped upside down or 30 min late?
