fuck hp/dell/compaq/all the cheap big box store junk.
buy a laptop that is actually made for being used, like a lenovo. some lenovos that you can find referbished on ebay for hundreds cost thousands just a year ago.

when i buy shit i look at the build quality. ie you dont use plastic hinges on a laptop, small ass batteries, bottom of the barrel screens.

yeah some of the systems coming out have awesome specs on paper, but who fucking uses 8 gigs of ram?, who fucking needs quad cores in an internet machine?

i suggest a t61 dual core, 2 gigs of ram, the 1440x900 screen(wide) total cost ~250

If you can't afford to drop it down the stares, or rip the power socket out when someone trips over the cord, it costs too much.

2GB of ram is good for XP, meh for Vista, and OK for 7.  I don't see a reason to get less than 3-4gb...  I have 8gb in my PC and can agree it's more than necessary...I've never used it all even while encoding multiple videos (x264.exe = 1.5gb ram each process), browser, and everything else open that I use, and was only using 6.5gb of the ram.  Typically I use 3-4gb.

I think you should start off by saying what you plan to use the laptop for...

Used Lenovo TinkPads can be had fairly cheap. Most aren't abused, since they cost a bunch new and the owners can actually afford appropriate lappy cases. Busineses that use them usually refresh their fleet before they fall appart. You'll also never have an issue getting parts, if something does fail. I've purchased 2 spare batteries for mine so far, one for $30 (6 cell, oem, unused), the other for $50 (9 cell, oem, unused). Their OEM batteries are also top-notch. Keep them mostly charged and they'll last longer than anything (as far as lifespan, not discharge time).

Plus you get the nipple mouse, and most if not all have replacable rubber tips. An older dual core with $40 in memory upgrades will be more than enough unless you're a 3D-gamer. But even mine with an ATI x1300 vid card can do 3D stuff decently.

Not to get off-topic, but just for a Moment of Wisdom: li-ion batteries' life span decreases by keeping them fully charged.  The amount of charge they're holding and high temps are the two things that shorten the lifespan.  Best bet is to only plug them in when the battery is needed...obviously not always useful but keeping it fully charged at all times is bad for the batteries.

More info, so you know I'm not pulling this out my ass:

I just picked up a Dell i5-430m, 512mb vid, 3gb DDR3, 15.6" display, 500gb 5400 RPM with 9-cell battery for the same price from Dell.com

Granted the touchpad kind of sucks but it's got a fucking core i5 so suck it.

Just let your friend buy it, Scott, it'll take 3 to 6 months before he has to slog through the weeks of warranty LIES perpetrated by some dude in India who tries to upsell him a new laptop, and after a month or so when he gets his laptop back nothing will have been fixed.

Refer to Adam Hopkin's HP warranty nightmare thread.

With the proper charger the battery will last longer if it stays topped off. Most laptops don't have a proper charger. Charge cycles also kill li-ion batteries. The worst thing you can do is run any rechargeable battery flat.
