Title: Religious?
Post by: Jorsher on August 23, 2010, 12:34:29 PM
Just curious.

I grew up in the south, so was surrounded by religion at an early age.  Went with friends to church to hang out and eventually became a "believer."  Father grew up Lutheran and mother grew up Catholic, so they already had religious backgrounds and although I'm happy to say they never pushed me towards religion when I was a child, they did end up following me to church.

Have always been an inquisitive fuck and as I got older, I had more and more questions and couldn't be satiated by "keeping faith."  It got to the point I was keeping the religious facade merely to give myself comfort that if there was a god, I would be hooked up with a mansion and boosted glasstop CRX when I died.  Soon after I realized this was a waste of time, because no matter what I couldn't convince myself that these folk tales were true.

I finally settled on agnosticism with a strong lean towards atheism.  I would say skrate-up atheist, but it'd be a bit foolish to claim there's no god when there's no possible way to prove either way.  I don't have anything against people believing it, but I do have a problem when they come to my door, tell me "atheists should be shot," picket outside of concerts to tell me I'm going to hell because of the music I listen to, etc.

Where does RHMT stand?

Agnostic.  Use religious teachings to guide you and reinforce ideas of "natural rights."  Wham bam a lot of the worlds' problems are solved.

and CRX.

I have a hard time believing any of it. It's a 2000 year old rumor that has been translated. I only think there might be a god out of fear. 99% of me says it's all horseshit.

I see religion as a tool giving power to a few who want to rule the many.

Religion is great to have for those who have no sense of direction, life purpose and to be reminded about being decent to others.

While for me I'm educated is enough to not need any religion "guidance".  ;D

I believe I control my destiny and not some deity. :?:

99% athiest with a 1% agnosticism.
there is so much evidence for athiesm that its practically a fact, but i would be just as bad as a thiest if i said there was no god 100%.

we dont have all the facts but if somehow compelling evidence showed up one day for the existance, i would have to go with the facts.
my viewpoint is controlled by the scientific process.

Quote from: treaty with Tripoli, drafted in 1796 under George Washington and signed by John Adams in 1797:
As the Government of the United States of America is not,
in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has
in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion,
or tranquillity, of Musselmen; and as the said States never
have entered into any war or act of hostility against any
Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no
pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce
an interruption of the harmony existing between the two
countries.

Spiritual, not religious... Neither atheist nor agnostic.  ;)

I've heard convincing arguements for a prime mover, but if there is a god I seriously doubt he is what the book claims he is. Certainly not a just god.

Kinda scary when the bible says the yellow race will rule the world when you look at current times.

but i also think that aliens at one time visited the planet because how else would you explain pyramids built to perfection and with exactly the same base size and point the same direction that are on opposite sides of the globe

Organized religion is  sham IMO.

There is more to this world than we can see, touch, hear, taste, etc.

CRX is the only proper answer.

religious people can't believe that we descended from dinosaurs, but they believe our universe and our day to day lives were preplanned by some fucking cosmic zombie wizard who is his own father, was conceived without sex, and whom we owe 10% of our income to.

god, please save me from your followers.

Many orthodox people speak as though it were the
business of sceptics to disprove received dogmas rather
than of dogmatists to prove them. This is, of course, a
mistake. If I were to suggest that between the Earth and
Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an
elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my
assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is
too small to be revealed even by our most powerful
telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my
assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption
on the part of human reason to doubt it, I
should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however,
the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in
ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday,
and instilled into the minds of children at school,
hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark
of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of
the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor
in an earlier time.

I believe in something greater than me, but I don't, and can't assign a name to it. If you look outside, and see how plants naturally feed on rain and sun, that's already some crazy shit. But then you look at things like the natural food cycle that exists, the way our bodies heal themselves, etc... and it's pretty crazy shit that man couldn't have made.

I don't spend my day trying to figure it out, I just acknowledge it.

i'm pretty much an atheist, but i hate douchebaggy atheists like richard dawkins.

i guess i've come to see religion for what it is: a means through which the human conscience can expunge the weight of all the judgments it incurs for the bad deeds it does. that 'guilt' is an evolutionary consequence of morality, and god's 'forgiveness' is some peoples' mechanism for dealing with human imperfection relative to the moral perfections we believe should exist. without some means of cleansing one's mind of them, those judgments would cumulatively crush the human psyche.

some people get it from religion, some people get it from meditation, some people get it from cleansing rituals, some people get it from science... as long as you're getting it from somewhere, more power to ya. in that respect, god is very real.

KROM!!!!!!!!!

I believe in a power greater than us. We could simple be a simple ant farm.

Star Trek: Wraith of Kahn

The genesis project.

As for the bible, great stories and a decent way to lead your life, same way with MOST of the ten commandments. Dad was raised catholic, was even an alter boy for some years, but never pushed religion on me. He simply stated the Bible, consider it a great fiction novel with good stories on how to lead your life and treat your fellow man.

When a bible thumper starts in on me with their spew, I ask what version they read.

King James version? So a King had some influence on a 1500+ year old book to fit his beliefs?

I also believe "We are not alone" aka aliens have visited here, we could be their ant farm. Go back to old cave drawings and weird flying objects we drawn. That or they had kickass weed even back then!

is it just me but did you figure out that religion was a bullshit idea form the start?
i remember being like 5-6 and one of my friends was trying to tell me about the bible(his parents are jesus freaks) and even then i couldn't even begin to believe some of the stuff he was telling me. telling me that god created everything, i just thought he was crazy (and he was).

every day i think about anyone can believe that shit. it just pisses me off to no end.
how can you fucking believe in that shit? its so fucking obvious.

i was talking to my roommate and he asked what i believe, i told him. his response was 'how do you explain everything?, there has to be something'
ahhhh, how can people bo so fucking ignorant of the facts?
how much fucking proof do you need?
are you that fucking stupid?

sorry for my drunkin ramblings.
