Title: Anyone shoot Trap?
Post by: CSaddict on August 31, 2010, 06:26:24 AM
My buddy joined a local club that shoots trap among other things. He has really taken to it and I want to get involved. I would like educated recommendations on a trap gun. No not a pump Mossberg 500 or an 870 Remington. A trap gun.

What are you guys that shoot trap using? I was thinking a Browning BT99 if I want to spend a bunch or a cheap Remington 1100 trap or classic trap used that I could adjust to fit me(Montecarlo Stock). Single shot is fine though. I doubt I will be doing doubles anytime soon.

There is a new Benelli Super Black eagle that is never fired locally for $975 that is mint but I heard that has issues cycling small loads. Not a "trap gun" but will do the job and its butter smooth.

Any thoughts?

My Boss used to be big into Trap, I have shot his practice gun a Beretta UGB 25 XCEL, was the nicest gun I have ever shot. I want to say it was about $4000 though. He also has a Beretta DT10, but I didn't get to shoot that, something about a $12K+ gun that he doesn't trust people with...

I shoot trap once or twice a month... my input... well where i live guns are over 3 times the price as the states...

my advice is, i have two skb trap guns, a pump and semi model, both optimized for it and well over 20 years old... i also just bought  a 12gauge 870.... ive shot trap with some benelli's and moss bergs too.... while the skb guns are smoother and "fun"er to shoot trap with, i really think its up to the shooter. if all you could afford was an 870, get the right choke, and nice length barrel and go to town. Now after saying that it sure is a world of difference shooting a nice smooth as silk benelli semi. If your just doing it for fun, use a gun that you feel comfortable with, and is in your price range.

get a maveric 88, same thing as a mossberg 500 but cheaper(literally the same gun).
i just dont see how a 2 shot is better then a pump. last time i shot trap they actually had stations that had like 4 pigeons.
i smoked everybody i was with and actually won a sweet ass buck knife.

I haven't done any shooting in a while but the gun I use is Beretta 391. It rocks but it is on the heavy side. They came out with a 392 model but people say 391 is better.

Hows the 391 handle small loads? I was looking at a Benelli SBE but its a 3.5 piece so Im sure there will be issues with 2 3/4 rounds.s

nope, the chamber length doesnt matter. the 3.5 inch is usually a full weight turkey round, although you can shoot any length shell out of it.

For some reason, most of the Benelli shotguns I've owned/fired have had issues cycling the smaller loads, from an M4 to a Supernova.  I just ignore them now.

Pick up a decent 20g and go have fun.  12g is almost cheating ;)  I still think you should just pick up an O/U for the future, but that's me.

Im buying a 870 when i get back home. Just because you spend $1000 on a gun dosent mean ur going to hit a fucking thing.

One of my buddies uses an 870 pump 28" right now. He put on a monte carlo stock and it fits him better. He actually bought a Carbon Fiber Benelli Super Sport yesterday so the 870 will be an extra for a friend at this point. He shot 13/25 his first time out which was good.

Just bought a used 1100 from Hoffmans. The bore was shiny and free of pitting and the action cycled smoothly. 30" with a full choke. The finish is decent for the money. It doesnt have a center sight though....I think a gun smith or I could add one if I felt I need it. I pulled it up to me and it felt a bit short so I put a slip on decelerator recoil pad on it and it felt much better. I paid $400 for it.
