I've been looking for a dirtbike lately, im trying to keep it under 2500 and i'd prefer not to get a 2 stroke. I want something with some power and the possibility to make it street legal, what is there out there? I know jack shit about dirtbikes.

My friend had a 2 stroke yz250 with a few mods and it hauled much more ass then the other 4 strokes they had... It felt more "raw" than the 4 stroke.
It threw me a good 20 feet.

xr600/xr650 you can get one cheaper than that and they are road legal. pretty heavy.
if you want something that is "more dirtbike" you can try and find a wr450 yamaha, but they might be more expensive than 2500

YZ250F
Face it, your a small chink, that will give you plenty of power, and its 4 stroke so you don't have to slip the clutch as much because or the raw torque.
Or YZ450F or CRF450

well i am small, but i do have 140lbs of awkward fury comin right atcha! and i like a fast bike.
My friend has a dualsport kawi, its a 600 i think, too much of a streetbike and not enough of a dirt bike.

Both very easy to make street legal, just different faring on front, you can find them on craigslist from a wr250f for cheap. Just need the headlight support and a couple other small things.

so i see that replacing valves are a common thing to do with these bikes, how hard is that to do? cant be that difficult right?

no headlights, you need to change the stator or it'll burn up.

all the turn signals, mirrors, etc...

Seems like KTM's are the only ones that are eazy to get plated. Get a 450 and a set of SM wheels :yes:

itll see mostly offroad and fuckaround on pavement. Wont take it on very far trips on the street but i have some nice hills and trails by me that i think i should take advantage of.

What Scott is trying to say (without saying it) is that this will be a drug-running bike... it needs to be versatile.

honestly try to find an older wr400 or wr426 there cheap as fuck and make a nice dual sport, my wr wasnt too hard to get inspected either

owninig both I prefer 2 or 4 anyday, but if your riding on the street mixing gas on the go has got to suck
newer 450s are so much quicker than 250 two smokes, but yes there is no way id ride a 450 over a 250 in the woods

the new 450s are insane fast dirtbikes. no 250 can come close, and it'll take some modding to get even. the prob with the 450s in the woods is the really long 1st gear, but seriously. they rock.
i love to ride my yz250 in the woods though... 450... so much faster

Mabey 6 years ago. In the last four years four strokes have gotten leaps and bounds past two strokes. Why do you think so many people run 4 strokes now in the ama?

Even in 2001 or whatever when yamaha came out with the YZ250F. The YZ250F owned any 125 when i was racing in intermediate. It was like that in all the 125 classes from Junior all the way up to Privateer's. And look how many pro racers run 4 strokes now.... There IS a reason.
Going around berms etc you DONT have to slip the clutch at ALL to have power. You just ride it rite out because of the torque.
If anyone is familiar with Washougal MX track, the newer 450F's pull 250 2 strokes all day long on that gient uphill.

that was around the time i was still riding dirt bikes. its been about 6 years

Maybe the reason is becuase nobody makes 2-strokes anymore. :?:
But the newer 4-strokes are the way to go for racing. I switched to a 4-stroke after running hare scrambles since the 2-stroke just kicks your ass. 2-strokes still dominate in drag racing and hill climbing. I'll always own a 2-stroke. :noel:
