Title: 6bt info?
Post by: PhilStubbs on October 16, 2011, 03:11:05 PM
I have recently been considering a diesel swap in my 90 silverado. All of my searching seems to always lead to the 6bt. I understand the concept of how diesels work but have never touched one. Are these 6bt's really as simple as the fuel pump controlling everything? No EMS of any kind?

Sounds like a pretty simple swap of so.

Correct.

Ok, now that I'm on the right track what do you do with bigger injectors? Is there some sort of adjustment in and out of boost? I know diesels don't really have vacumm, but they can't always be boosting.  I'm figuring I will want to bump the power a little.

Throw fuel at it.  It does the rest.

Damn, that's an awesome thread and really motivates me to do this swap. Something just seems too easy about it.

Now to find and engine and decide on a tranny. I really want to get away from having a manual cause the truck sucks to tow with now, but it seems tough to get an auto to hold the torque.

Correct.

As long as it is not VP-44 pumped or a Common Rail.

 :P

I wants me some 6BT action one day.

VP44 is easier to tune than a 7.3 Powerstroke.  You can get more  power, safely, by dictating injector pressure and timing at all loads and speeds than you can with the old smoke screw setups.

So, my tranny desisions have narrowed down to th400 with $1k (puke) adaptor plate or 47rh. Since I have to buy a tranny either way, I figure I might as well cut out the adaptor plate cost and use the 47rh.

I don't doubt it.  The VP pumps seem to be failure prone, and fuckers are expensive to replace.

And shit for torque production supposedly.

DD 4-53T.

 :P

It may not make a to of power, but the fucker sounds pretty damn crazy.

lol

VP44 cost a lot less than CP3.  Pay attention; the parts for the older stuff will become difficult to find.  WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?
