Wife is looking for a small dog and the last thing I want is some little yapper I am going to want to shoot. I need something awesome non faggot looking, good personality and little health problems. It's much to ask for but I figured I would just ask for some cool suggestions

What your idea of a small dog?
Yorkshire terrier small or Karelian Bear dog small (50-60 lbs.)?
I see a good quality bulldog (gas issues, head butting :P) could work for ya.
Or maybe a plain and simple mutt from the pound. :noel:

Beagle, but keep it on a leash. Cool lazy dogs that like to wander if they get the chance.
Blue heeler, easy to train and will bite strangers if you want it to. Herding dog that uses its teeth to control the herd.
Yappers suck get a dog on the small end of "medium".

You don't want a chihuahua. They've got huge personalities and are actually kind of cool, but they have to be in your business (and you in theirs) or it's just problematic. There'd still be a break in period - mostly you coming to grips with the dog, as they aren't a breed you can train and expect it to retain it or care for any period of time.
Jack Russell is an idea, small, agile, bright. I've met some cool Yorkies, but the obnoxious grooming (haircuts?) you have to give them are meh.

What is your definition of small dog?
German Pinchers are cool, they are about a half size doberman, with less health and temperament issues, and without the yappiness of the minpin's.

I would say golden but there not that small. I have 2, a girl and a guy; they are both smart, were easy to train, are good with kids, and run my yard like nothing I seen.

If you have time to spend with the dog, border collies are good smart dogs, but if left ignored they can become destructive.

Small dogs are usually what lonely spinsters, neglected housewives, and women who can't have children buy because they have baby fever and need something to dote on 25 hours a day. If you have any social life, at all, rethink what animal to buy.

Fuck that, my step mom has a few and they are some barking mother fuckers. I vote Boston terrier. They are pretty Fucking cool dogs, buddies has one and its pretty much just like my boxers but small. Loyal, smart, and do well for the most part on there own. But like to be with people too.

We had a lhasa apso growing up, very good dog. They're smart enough to bark when they need to piss/shit, can entertain themselves with toys (not furniture), don't shed, have personality, and are loyal to their owners. They were bred as sentries, so they aren't all over you 24/7. They train fast so their yapping can be controlled easily, but they generally don't yap unless there's a good reason.
Make sure you read up on whatever breed you select. There are some websites that can say if a breed is not a good fit for your lifestyle/personality.

I own a teacup Merle Pomeranian and he weighs a little over a Kg
Does not bark at anything. Is about 90% house trained (if you don't let him out every few hours he will pee in the house then go hide in his cage)
But he did cost $900 and about $1600 to date with all his vet stuff, premium GO! puppy dog food & accessories.
I think it all comes down to training and the temperament of the breed. I personally do not like chihuahua's because they take alot of training and are scared of their own shadows.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier are freakin tiny I like to call them pocket pits. Guy down the street has one little female cant be more than 30 pounds.

this is what we got a few weeks ago. he is doing really well and its nice easy as hell to train, after 3 weeks here i have him staying where i tell him knows his name learning to sit and lay and fetch. he just turned 3 months today and he will have an accident, but he is starting to show us signs and or wimper a lot when he needs to get outside.
he is a mix with miniture poodle and mini schnauzer, the breed is a shnoodle, you may this he is lame but he is friendly and hardly makes a noise and is pretty relaxed all the time. he will get almost 20 pounds.
both breeds are known to be smart friendly and easy to train, but the schnauzer can have an attitude if not kept social.

They try to act tough, and are just big enough to be considered a real dog, but still small enough that if they try to be obnoxious all you have to do is pick them up and be like "fuck you, this is how it's gonna be".

I will be looking up all the dogs you guys suggested so I appreciate the info.
Last small animal I had was a Bengal cat and she at times could be massively annoying. I was even half asleep once and hear her run into the room.. Instantly she turns and runs towards the exit but not before doing a jumping swipe at my foot cutting the tender bottom of my foot open. I proceeded to chase and yell at her while limping in pursuit.
Sizes are pretty simple.. Chihuahuas I consider real small, pitbull medium, and German Shepard is large. I was half sold on the frenchies and this all black American cocker spanniel till she said they have major Health problems. I don't want to have to spend thousands or break the family's heart when the thing can't breath or something else.

Cairn terrier are the shit. I had one that could catch birds. She would run up and then jump just as the bird flew away and she would snatch them outta the air. She got about 1 in five. Lol.

It only seems that way because you're a bachelor. A small dog appeases his old lady's baby fever. One less mouth to feed is one less mouth to feed, but if you gotta have an extra mouth a 5lb dog is cheaper than a 7lb baby.

Yeah, cuz there's a shortage of poms.
I'm biased towards pits, because they're damn good dogs, easy to train, relatively small, healthy, quiet, tough, easy to maintain... Females shouldn't be more than 55lbs if they're appropriately sized, but mine is 65lbs and of course all the backyard breeders want the biggest dogs with the biggest heads.
Originally I was looking for a shiba inu or malamute sled-dog looking thing, but we had a huskie in the past and FUCK ALL THAT SHEDDING. Also, Alabama summer's aren't really a comfortable climate.
If it wasn't already adopted by time I got to it, I probably would have taken home a miniature pinscher. Don't know how easy they are to train, and they look like they could be little bastards, but I think they qualify as small and badass.
Boston/jack russell/cairn terriers I'd consider if I had to get a small dog. My mom has a cairn -- not nearly as intelligent as my pit but it has a smaller brain so I let it slide... Otherwise it's a pretty good dog. Barky motherfucker, but that probably has to do more with the dog itself than the breed. Snappy when it know's its in trouble, but that seems to be the norm with little dogs.

We have a Yorkshire terrier and a shih tzu and there booth great dogs. I personally like small dogs better simply for the fact there a bit easier to deal with in an apt/rental situation and i just simply think yorkies are badass little dogs. (had 3 so far)
But Get w/e you find a good fit for your situation. there are tons of cool dogs out there.

I bought (adopted) a dog from the shelter, it died 3 months later.
brought the dog back to their vet 5 times and they kept saying nothing was wrong with her.
brought her to my vet and found out she had distemper, had to put her to sleep.
We went through hell to get that dog, we were treated like liars and criminals by the staff. they had to come out to my house to verify that we had a fence around our property and that our "landlord" was ok with it since i lived at my mothers house at the time ( i was 18, just started working).
jumped through hoops to rescue a shelter pet instead of buying a dog from a breeder. Never again.
There's a reason they checked all that stuff. They're trying to make sure the dogs don't end up back at the shelter. Switching homes frequently isn't good for the dog, so they try and get it right the first time.
As far as them being assholes, unless you're saying they were for verifying your situation, is the fault of the shelter.
All the dogs I grew up with were shelter dogs, all were fine. Distemper is something the shelter should have vaccinated them for. Breeders, for the most part, don't give a fuck because they don't give a fuck, and your expensive dog is the result of not giving a fuck. Ultimately, shelter/breeder dogs come from the same place.

not the white one. i got two short hair black and brown dachshund's. they love the shit out of you, and your family. almost attack anyone else. not good with small children, and they deserve the spiked collars because they dont shit from anyone.

my roommate has one, i think around 15lbs, the short hair type. cool dog that fucking hates rabbits/squirrels/other small fluffy shit. he routinely chases down rabbits and kills them. has yet to get a squirrel.

Had a similar experience here with one of my dogs. Shelter at first wouldn't let us get the dog we wanted because it wasn't a "good fit" as our first dog. The place even lie to us and said the dog was no longer there. They then proceeded to make us wait forever to adopt an older dog, which you would think they would want to give away to anyone with a home and a job...
Second time I adopted a dog was from a different place, they let me pay for the dog on the spot and pick her up after the 7 day waiting period was up (to make sure no one came to claim her).
We have two beagle mixes, they get my vote for "smaller" dogs. You just need to always have them on a leash or have a good fence lol.
FYI depending on your living arrangements having a dog that goes nuts for small animals can get annoying lol. I live in a condo with a shared yard so having the dog freak out over squirrels sometimes gets old.
Also, you can be breed-picky and still adopt the dog. There are plenty of online sites that let you search by breed, age, etc.

I got a mini Australian shepherd about 8 months ago. Best dog i've ever owned. super smart, and great with my kids. she's about full size now, and she's 18" tall, about 25 lbs. red merle in color with one blue eye and one green.

my shelter pit mix is the best dog i've ever had or heard of. will let toddlers use him as a jungle gym or rip your face off if i tell him to. doesn't bark, housebroken, plays fetch all day, and guards my nieces at the park. never have to leash him, he's goddamn perfect. i wish i could find a woman as loyal, i'd marry her in an instant. best 75$ i've ever spent.

Yes. Neither one is. Jeb, the first one we stole from Erin's cousin because he was running around outside at 5 months by himself next to a busy 2 lane each way highway. She went to the mall supposedly which is 20 minutes away. Fuck her, I put him in the truck and went down the road.

Stevie, nig nog dog #2 is a rescue dog from a local foster program. Got him at Petsmart when he was about 20lbs, now he's 50ish and he regularly diesels Jeb around the yard who is 90. He's blind in his right eye and mostly blind in his other and his skull is crushed and dented in on one side, probably from being thrown from a car. They found him in a ditch. He's the best dog ever and a great alarm dog too. If he hears anything out of the ordinary he lets you know. Somehow he manages to chase rabbits at night which I don't understand seeing as how he has limited vision out of one eye.
I will never get a dog from a breeder.

Yorkie's they're small, they have hair instead of fur, haven't seen one that was yippy at all. They also like to play and are plenty small. Also in Socal they should be easy to find.

I work on the road year round. woman came with and wanted a companion while i was at work all day. Ended up getting a yorky-poodle from a friend. I was under the impression this thing was going to be a pain in the arse. Not the case. Real easy going dog. He minds his own business most the time. Then when you wanna play he is all game! He does well in the car (unlike my mothers shitzu-poodle).

wife and i have an english red nose pit, and all she does is eat, sleep and shit. he is about half the size of a full grown american pit. wanna say 35ish lbs last time she was at the vet, and we also have a quite properly named min pin/ yorkie mix. his name is turbo lol. i can honestly say ive never liked small dogs until him. all my friends think hes awesome. has the coloring of a doberman and the shape of a yorkie without all of the hair. he is super obediant, and playful. he will get wired when playing around, and all i gotta do is say calm down and he will stop and just sit there. idk, maybe we just got an odd one, or maybe those mutts are just that cool lol

Well my wife fell in love with the shiba inu and when she asked her friend (the landlord) she replied no because it was an Akita mix which is a hunter dog and on the home owners insurance top ten dangerous dogs list. Thankfully it was enough to motivate her into really wanting our own house, which we are looking into now.
I ended up bartering a site for a snow Bengal. Fully papered and is real good with everyone.

Miley and Fanny. Not 100% sure what Miley is, just that she's part aussie shepherd. The other is a chihuahua. We got Miley from a friend of a friends cousin and Fanny from my wifes job(vet clinic). She was ran over and her hip was broken and the lady that dropped her off never went back for her. They fixed her and let my wife adopt her. It's the quietest Chihuahua I've ever met. Doesn't do a damn thing besides lay in her crate all day except to eat and shit. The other one is a handful. She NEEDS at least an hour of straight play or else she'll be hell inside the house. She's only 8 weeks, so I'm hoping she calms the fuck down. Fanny keeps her in check.

Had 2 Jack Russel's, they are really good small dogs. They CAN be high strung at times but most of the time they just chill. They are easy to train and are great companions. Our first one was great for security, he was very smart and it was like he had a 6th sense when it came to strangers. The second one we got from a shelter and was beat so he is mostly scared of strangers, he might look out the window and bark a few times to let you know someone or something is outside but if someone comes in he usually retreats to another room. The short haired Jack Russel's don't shed much either but they do like alot of attention.

I say English Bulldog,great with kids and easy to train also the lazy man's dog O0.Only issue is they do have health issues and are expensive as Hell.I paid 1800 for mine(Damn Rob Dyrdek gettin them and making them popular).Any way the cat you got looks bad ass
