Title: Help on picking out a two stroke engine
Post by: Henry on April 14, 2009, 10:51:26 PM
Alright, I picked up a 67' Bridgestone 175DT but the engine is seized. I haven't pulled the heads off to see if it's just locked or if the pistons are melted yet. If their not melted then I'm gonna rebuild the thing. In the meantime I was thinking of tossing another two stroke engine into it. Though something newer. Only thing is the 175 twin that's in it is fairly small so nothing too crazy. Any of you guys know of a two smoker with decent power but not too tall. It's need to be aircooled also cause I don't want to mess with mounting up a radiator and modd'in the frame at all. To say just find another of the same engine is easier said then done. I was thinking of a RD350 engine but those are kinda hard to find and not sure if it'd even fit. Gimme some ideas.

Damn thing would probably twist my frame in half. I'd be sure to get my will updated also before hand.

This is what the beast looks like. I was able to fit it in the back of my wife's minivan and lifted the thing out by myself also. My 73' Honda CL175 is bigger then this thing and I thought that was tiny.  :P I've got a thing for small cc vintage jap bikes.

Frank, I picked up a B&S 5hp engine for free this weekend also I could toss in there but won't. I plan on riding this thing to work and have to make it over 50mph on most of the roads and I can't see the Briggs being able to accomplish that.  :P

A 125cc will get you to 50mph with no problem, heck even the new cbr125r 4 stroke with it's raging 12hp will do that.

Find an old air cooled 250cc dirtbike motor preferably from a CR  :noel:

That is fucking hot, a kx-250 would be fantastic. All my bikes motors were built by pro-circuit when I raced and ran on vp-c12, they put out very well. I hate to say this but it would be nicer to keep it air cooled, I have no experence with those though.

Any decent power 2-stroke is watercooled.  But your and my definition of decent power may be different.   :-\

Yeah I know that but I don't want to deal with radiators cause I don't want to touch the frame. I can make the mounts for the engine but I'm not gonna weld on any mounts for a radiator. Now if I could find a Yamaha Blaster engine I'd give that whirl.

PB blast the cyl's for a weekend and give it a pull, I was given a old Scorpion snowmobile, the dealer took on trade with the engine locked up,  Did the PB trick and it ran like new money.  Raped it a bit and sold it for $300

Than your better off going 4-stroke than a blaster motor.  I'd doubt you'll fit the expansion chamber inbetween that frame and front tire.  And since the blaster's are so weak and gutless, you're going to need it.

I'd look for a Yamaha Warrior motor or a Honda 300/400ex motor.

A blaster motor would be pefect.

1. They are cheap as fuck
2. They put out 17hp stock
3. Large aftermarket support which can easily get you 30hp
4. Air Cooled
5. You can beat the fuck out em all day

X2
Blasters are alot of fun. Its like having a raged out d series that you can just hold at redline and its to loose to blow up!

Mount a radiator, run an R6 drivetrain.  :)

If he is going to do that, might as well do my first suggestion cr500.

if it were me and i was a dickface like the op  id run a fuckin fuckin kawi kdx200 motor 1988 or older.  air cooled.  2 stroke good snap, but very nice powerband like a 4 stroke,  good tq and its a 6 speed.

Well I pulled off the heads and no melted pistons. Though it's getting stuck somewhere as I gave it a few taps with a rubber mallet and broke it free and can crank it over. It'll crank over fine and then just get stuck. So I pulled off the jugs and one has a 3/4" crack in it and the piston from the other cyclinder has a pretty good gouge in it. With the jugs off the bottom end cranks over just fine so maybe the ring was getting caught on one of the ports but there weren't any gouges in the cylinders so I thought that was weird.
Hmmm, a KDX200 engine Josh? I'll have to see what those are going for. Finding jugs for this engine is gonna take me awhile. So let hope I can find something soon and cheap.

hell yea, i used to have a 88kdx200.  way more grunt than a 125 not quite as potent as a 250, but would trash a 250 in the woods due to 6 spd tranny and excellent tq and smooth meaty powerband.

itd be a great choice for that thing, oon top of the face its a smaller motor  and it does make more hp than a blaster motor, which is cinfigured for a quad with tthe reverse kickstart ect.

fuck a blaster

You wouldn't happen to have or know of someone with one of these godlike engines Josh?

Well I looked around but the KDX motor what pretty hard to find and I couldn't find a alot of parts for it or maybe I was looking in the wrong places. Anyways I just came back from picking up a blaster motor that just needs a new slug for 200. Came with everything...harness, electronics, carb, exhaust, throttle, clutch cable. I think I came out pretty good since these little motors are bringing an arm and a leg on ebay and everywhere else.

They aren't illegal, manufacturers just aren't making new one's

They aren't making them because they are illegal.  Can you grasp this?

What about BRP? They are still producing new 2stroke sleds.

It's not that 2 strokes are illegal, it's that they're held to emissions standards now.  For most 2 cycles it means adding so much shit to them it's cheaper/easier to get similar power from a bigger 4 stroke.  That's my thought on it at least...

Winnah!

There are various ways of making things illegal, gentlemen.

Al Gore is coming for you.

I'll take out the 2-stroke tomorrow in honor of this thread.  I'll be waiting for Gore if he wants to race.
