i think you could find an engine for alot less, engine from a shitty 2 stroke snowblower or somthin, those things are made to run balls out for an hour or whatever at a time, i was thinkin a 100+cc knock off honda 50 motor off ebay but they have a built on trans so probly little heavy

then you just need a parasail and a chute  :?:

build that with an aircooled VW engine. thats easily less than $5k

i work at www.southeastaero.com (http://www.southeastaero.com) BTW. i build planes daily

talk about sketchy lol those ultralights dont have the best saftey record if i remember right  :?: paramotoring looks stupid easy and i think they have pretty loose regulations as to where you can take off and fly

fuckin fun. these fuckers go low and get fuckin high

There really are no regulations on paramotoring.

The reason ultralights have a shitty record is cause anyone with a drivers license can build and fly one. 99% of airplane crashes are pilot error. Since any retard with a dream and some cheap tools can build and fly one means the same people doing shitty work on cars are building these.

Pretty much sums it up. Want more proof go to Oshkosh and walk the ultra light area then head over to the vintage warbirds area. Note the difference in people.  :?:

Secksy, I assume ultralight regulations are a little tougher than those for paramotoring?
Title: Re: home made flying
Post by: HiProfile on January 19, 2012, 10:49:47 PM
The engine would be cheap. Get a 210cc HF motor, or better a 200cc Honda clone, add some compression, larger carb, better cam and/or lifters, etc. Make a pulley setup for a few bucks and you have a nice motor for $200. $300 if you want to rev it out, since the stock flywheels like to grenade.

So I can see this being a sub-$1500 project if you don't do it every weekend.

Not really. You can fly them out of your back yard if you have enough room. You just have to avoid populated areas, but the regulations are very vague and as long as nobody is in danger

Can you be arrested for flying under the influence? Better yet, is it illegal to fly with an open alcohol container?
Title: Re: home made flying
Post by: PhilStubbs on January 19, 2012, 11:30:24 PM
Alcohol and plane laws are very similar to car laws except you can't fly within 8 hours of drinking. You also wouldn't want to drink and fly. Altitude multiplies the effects a lot.

Iv seen people use modded honda clones on those things. Shit If they can be held wide open at a kart track for hours.
My death machine never gave me trouble except for crashing it and I would beat the piss out of it. my buddy i sold it to rides it to work. LOL

ya ultralights are fuckin cool, but i still think at least for me id rather get into paramotoring because it looks easy and more fool proof then fixed wing ultralight with nothing really stopping you from say going into a fast nose dive if shit goes wrong

you can do trikes with paramotoring

My problem with them is they are slow and  it doesn't take much wind to force you to land far from your destination. Also, since I can fly planes, nothing about the ultralight scares me.

A helicopter would cost a lot more than $5k to build and you don't have the safety net of gliding. Good helicopter pilots can autorotate but you only get one chance to try that and hopefully you are over an open area when you have to do it. I'm not interested.

After flying real planes, there is no way you would get me in a flying lawn chair.  Fucking slow, boaring blah blah.  If I can't get inverted or pull 6g's I aint happy :)

I think I'd rather get an old cub, beaver or cessna then an ultralight.

i never said i wanted an ultralight over any other plane, what i said was if all i had was $5k to spend on flying, i would build an ultralight over a paraglider

if i had my way, i would get a citabria with inverted an oil system. not that im much into aerobatics, but i know i would mess around from time to time and wouldnt want to worry

fuck your life if you want to fly in anything made in china.  if its anything like there gokarts and scooters, and it looks like it is, it will work for 2 flights then somthing will break off, thats if it even shows up in one piece..

probly what alot of those people with crashed ultralights thought lol

i agree with you tho, theres probly alot more of those then paramotors and your actually flying it not just powered gliding. i wasent really interested in paramotoring as a way of traveling anywhere but that is a good point i didnt think of, trying to land somewhere you want when your fighting wind with a glider pulling on your 10 or 20hp motor

Wow I didn't know you get Apache's that cheap! Local airport was trying to sell about 6 of them for $200k/pc or best offer a few years ago, and no I am not confusing them with Navajo's :o

if they have enough electronics dumped into them and new engines they could be worth it. most of the stuff i work on is single engine, fixed gear and retails for $500-600k, but they are faster and go higher than an old apache

My buddy cam and I fucking around @ the cottage in his cherokee 140. He's got a ultralight with a rotax - its the shopping cart of the sky and scary as hell. We hit a farmers fence with it last year (couldn't see while landing)  It's probably what we're both gonna die in...  Too much cheap beer and top gun

If you're gonna risk it, atleast get famous doing it...  Land a wingsuit w/o a chute...  Strap a snowboard/skeleton sled with an air pillow to your chest n find a 1 to 3 pitch slope covered in snow.  Put some model rocket engines on your ankles to stop, once you land.  Profit...   :noel:
