I have a 1990 Silverado that was originally a v6 truck with a 5 speed. I'm planning to change the tranny and rear end fluids but cant find any info anywhere on what is supposed to be in it. I know some GM manuals use auto fluid but have no clue on this one. I'm ASSuming the rear end uses normal 90w gear oil, but again cant find any info to know for sure. Anyone know what is supposed to be in there?

This transmission has three different designs and designations. Commonly referred to as a Getrag, it is also known as a HM290 (Hydramatic), a 5LM60 (Muncie) and a NV3500 (New Venture). As the main differences are internal, you will need to tear down the unit before ordering the rebuild kit. This transmission uses a special GM Syncromesh synthetic fluid, which is available from your local dealer.

For $16/qt. + :noel:

Well, it doesn't have a removable bell housing. My understanding is that both the Muncie and NV trannys do have removable bell housings. I'm gonna ASSume its the getrag. It looks a whole lot like the getrag in my e36 m3 too. That tranny calls for ATF though.
I have heard of people running 10w-30 in these with no problems. I have always used Mobil1 10w-30 in my Hondas with no issues.

Use the correct fluid for these or regret it later. :noel:

Well, I definetly don't need any problems with it right now, but I'm planning to put a 700r4 in there as soon as I find one for a decent price. I hate towing with a manual and that's about all this truck does.
So, thoughts on rear end fluid. It's just an old 10 bolt. 90w?
-
...I hate towing with a gas engine and that's about all this truck does.
6bt / nv4500 swap time. O0
-
6bt is in the future for this truck, but not with a manual. I'm thinking about the dodge auto that normally hangs off the back of the 6bt or maybe a th400 with adaptor plate.

90w in rear end thats whats in mine

According to Alldata there are only two manual transmissions offered behind the 4.3. One is the Muncie 4 speed which has the removable bellhousing and looks like the older SM465 transmissions. This one takes 90W gear oil.
The NV3500 5 speed does not have a removable bellhousing. The NV4500 which would never be behind a doggy ass 4.3 does have a removable bellhousing. This one takes the expensive ass synchromesh synthetic fluid (Syncromesh Trans Fluid T2850).
FWIW, both are referred to as "Muncie" in the manual.
Bend over.

Is there anything on the tranny to ID it? I'll just crawl under there and figure out what it is.
Not sure if I said it but the truck had a 305 with a rod knock when I bought it and now has a 4 bolt 350. Everything I have seen says all 2wd manual trucks had 4.3's. The guy I bought it from said it started life as a v6 also. Maybe someone put a different tranny in it?

Eigth digit of the VIN will tell what engine it was.
K = L05 which is a gutless TBI 350
E = L03 which is an even more gutless TBI 305 (I know E is for the passenger cars, but not 100% sure for the trucks)
Z = 4.3 TBI engine which loves to suck fuel and go nowhere while doing so.
I highly doubt it was a diesel or a 454. Of course I am ASSuming you have a 1500 2WD. The NV2500 was never put behind eithr of these engines as far as I know. The NV4500 would have been behind either of those two engines, and it is pretty damn distinct. Cast iron case 5 speed with a removable bellhousing.
All of the above are damn near impossible to kill though. Lol!
I don't know who told you all 2WD trucks were 4.3s, but they don't know what the fuck they are talking about. The 454SS was a2WD truck for fucks sake.
Bottom line, if it is a 1500, and it does NOT have a removable bellhousing it is almost certainly a NV3500.
:P
-
It's an aluminum case with non-removable bell housing.
I never said all 2wd trucks were v6. He told me all 2wd manuals were v6
-
Thats gotta be flawed, because by that logic the 454SS doesn't even exist.

Reminds of a customer I had about 8yrs ago or so, he bought a early '90s Chevy and came in and told me he had really rare engine in his.
Caterpillar 350, b/c the sticker on fan shroud said Cat. 350, as in Catalytic 350cid SBC.
This guy was so proud of his purchase of a vehicle with such a "rare engine" that could not bring it myself to validate his stupidity.
He left on his merry way even after he told me he already checked with the local Caterpillar dealer and they told him Caterpillar does not make those. :noel:
