Title: 5th and 6th gear not engaging 04 maxima
Post by: krazy4 on January 28, 2012, 11:02:35 PM
I rebuilt the trans in my car a couple months ago.
It has a hydraulic clutch, and a cable shifter if that makes a difference.

I thought it was the shifter bracket where the cables connect to on the tranny, but replacing it did not fix the problem.

1st through 4th and reverse work fine. Tranny shifts tits, but 5th and 6th not working is shitty.

I'm 99% sure I did not mess anything up in the trans. I tested all the shift forks before I put the case back together. It also went into 5th and 6th a couple times when I first got it back on the road no problem. Now when I try to go into 5th and 6th it's like it's hitting a wall.

I'm stumped. Maybe you guys might have an idea for this pos.

Shifter assembly?  :noel:

Bad Bushings or something feel in there and is blocking the shifts, maybe?

Only reason I don't think I messed up is because it went into those gears a few times when I was driving it but then it wouldn't go into 3rd or 4th. You either had 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th. Or 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

For awhile 3rd and 4th wouldn't work either. It acted like 5th and 6th. Seemed like there was a wall. So I popped the hood and noticed a the clip that holds one of the cables was loose. Tightened that up and those gears worked again.

Gotta learn somehow.

What do you guys think it could be if it's internal? Only thing I can think of would be a couple check balls maybe in the wrong place.

I have done this before and it turned out to be that I had slightly bent the gear selector arm hulking the transmission back into the car. Unhooking your selector and see if You can manually put it into 5th and 6th.
